      1 ea Directions for quillos

Directions are from Gentle Spirit magazine Vol 4 No 3. The
instructions are from Ellen Lyman who has a series of sewing books
out called Sewing with Dorcas. The people who put out Gentle Spirit
allow sharing articles if credit's given, so the ordering information
is at the bottom of the instructions.

Popularly known as a Quillo, this lightweight quilt rolls up to form a
pillow when not in use. I helped our daughter make one for her doll,
and I wanted to share it with you, too. (Dimensions are given for
children's and adult sizes at the end of the project.)

Supplies Required: Remnants of print and solid fabric, sewing machine,
thread, needle, yardstick, scissors, bating, and straight pins.

  Directions for a dolly quillo.

  1. Machine wash, dry and iron the fabrics. 2. Cut a 8" square and a
22" square from the batting, color A fabric (print) and color B fabric
(coordinating solid). Calico fabrics are so pretty, or use children's
prints such as hearts, baby blocks, cars & trucks, etc. 3. To make the
pillow pocket, pin the 8" square batting to the WRONG side of the
color A fabric and baste around all four edges. 4. Pin the 8" square
of color B fabric to the color A fabric RIGHT sides together, and sew
a 1/2" seam around all sides, leaving a 4" opening. Turn right side
out. Whipstitch the opening shut with the needle and thread. Set
aside. 5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 using the remaining batting and
fabric. 6. Center the pocket along one edge of the quilt as shown in
the sketch (color A of the pocket facing color B of the quilt). Pin
in place, and stitch around 3 sides of the pocket, leaving the edge
in the center of the quilt open. 7. Stitch two rows on the quilt,
dividing it into thirds as shown in the sketch. You're all done! 8.
To use the quillo, insert your feet into the pocket and pull the
quilt up on your lap. To turn it into a pillow, place it pocket side
down. Fold each side to the center along the stitch lines. Now fold
it up in thirds, turn it over, turn the pillow right side out over
the folded quilt so that the quilt stuffs into the pillow. 9. For a
child size quillo, make the pillow 15" square and the quilt 45" x
  36". For an adult, use an 18" pillow and a 45" x 56" quilt (45" x72"
if you want a BIG one!).
