Hot Oven Mitts      by      Pat Knox

Materials:  Rayon and cotton rug yarn, 2 70-yd skeins of white, yellow, or
cerise, main color (MC); 1 skein cerise, contrasting color (CC), aluminum afghan
hook size 9.  Rug needle.

Gauge:  7 sts=2"; 3 rows=1"

Mitt:  First Half:  With MC, ch 20.  Work in afghan st as follows: Row 1:  Skip
first chain (loop on hook is first stitch), pull up a loop in each chain across,
keeping all loops on hook.

To Work Loops Off:  YO hook, pull through first loop, *YO hook, pull through
next 2 loops, repeat from * across until 1 loop remains.  Loop that remains on
hook always counts as first stitch of next row.

Row 2:  Skip first vertical bar, pull up a loop under next vertical bar and
under each vertical bar across, keeping all loops on hook. Work loops off as
before.  Repeat row 2 for afghan stitch.
Rows 3-5:  Work even---20  stitches.
Row 6:  Insert hook under 2nd and 3rd vertical bars, pull up a loop (1 stitch
decrease), work to 3rd stitch from end, insert hook under 3rd and 2nd vertical
bars from end, pull up a loop (1 stitch decrease), pull up a loop in last
vertical bar.  Work loops off---18 stitches. Row 7 and 8:  Work even.
Row 9:  Work across to last stitch, insert hook under top strand of horizontal
bar between last 2 stitches, pull up a loop (1 stitch increase), work last
stitch---19 stitches.  Work loops off.
Row 10:  Work even.
Row 11-16:  Repeat rows 9 and 10 three times each.
Row 17:  Repeat row 9---23 stitches.
Divide for Thumb:  Row 18:  Work across 16 stitches.  Working on these stitches
only, work even until there are 25 rows from start.  Decrease 1 at each side
every other row 3 times--10 stitches.  Slip stitch in each stitch across.  End
off.
Thumb:  Row 1:  Join yarn in 17 stitch of last long row, work across---7
stitches.  Work loops off.
Row 2:  Decrease 1 stitch at beginning of row, increase 1 stitch at end of row.
Row 3:  Work even.
Row 4:  Repeat row 2.
Row 5:  Decrease 1 stitch at beginning of row, work across--6 stitches.  Slip
stitch in each stitch aross.  End off.
SECOND HALF
Work as for first half through row 8.
Row 9:  Increase 1 stitch at beginning of row--19 stitches.
Row 10:  Work even.
Row 11-16:  Repeat rows 9 and 10.
Row 17:  Repeat row 9.
Divide for Thumb:  Row 1:  Work first 7 stitches.
Row 2:  Increase 1 stitch at beginning of row, decrease 1 stitch at end of row.
Row 3:  Work even.
Row 4:  Repeat row 2.
Row 5:  Decrease 1 stitch at end of row--6 stitches.  Slip stitch in each stitch
across.  End off.
Join yarn in next free stitch of row 17, work as for first half from row 18.

EDGING:  With CC, make loop on hook.  From right side, begin at outer edge of
mitt, sc pieces together along sides and top, working 2 scs at each top corner
of palm and thumb, and 1 sl st at inner corner of thumb.  When bottom of mitt is
reached, sc around bottom edge.  End off.


