Archive-name: games/anime-faq

Information I really need, aside from general updates:

Someone said Magician Lord (Neo-Geo) was anime-based. What anime?
Whether that upcoming stuff ever came out.
Information on those new planned Akira games.
Information on Speed Racer and Power Rangers game Japanese versions.
Information on that "Escape from Cyber City" game for CD-I. (Now I know it's
Galaxy Express 999, but that's not really much information...)
Alisia Dragoon information (I never heard of Dragon Breeder).
What Hokuto no Ken games were numbered <6.
Info on the arcade Gundam and Dragonball games.
Which games started out as anime/manga, and which as games. (I don't know a
lot of these. Oh, if it started as something else, like Lodoss, I count it
  in the main section.)
Details on the Yuu Yuu Hakusho and Votoms games.
What characters those SD Banpresto games listed under "miscellaneous" use.
I heard of a "Yoyo Battle" game which sounded like a Sukeban Deka game. Does
this game exist and what is it?

Anime-related Video Games [Last modified 6/27/94, posted 7/3/94]

This article lists the anime (and manga) related video games that are avail-
able. Most are available only in Japan. Games upon which anime was based (ex.
Dragon Quest/Dragon Warrior) are listed separately. The list is bound to be
incomplete, if only because I don't know every single anime that exists and
thus can't tell for sure that a game is anime-based.

I'm including cheap Japanese live-action TV shows in here too.

If you think a game may be out of print, let me know. While it still may be
possible to buy it at some stores, it will save some frustration when trying
to special order it.

DISCLAIMER: Because I (or Steve Pearl, who used to keep this list) collected
many of these listings and did not write them, I cannot vouch for their
complete accuracy. Use this as a guide only. Thanks!

       *The Systems*

Since anime is so popular in Japan, there are many anime-related video games
available there. Unfortunately, the systems that are sold in America often
differ from their Japanese counterparts leading to many headaches and much
hair-rending when trying to get games made for one system to them to run on
the "equivalent" system.

Japanese/American System Equivalent and Compatibility Chart

Japanese American Compatibility Notes
-------- -------- -------------------
Gameboy Gameboy Yes.

Famicom NES Only with an adapter.

Famicom N/A The Disk System is not available in the US.
Disk System

Super Famicom Super NES Yes for American systems, but the cartridge cases
may need to be filed or the slot adapted to fit
the cartridge. Europeans will need adapters.

NEC PC-Engine TG16/Duo CD/SCD games are compatible, regular cartridges
(CoreGrafx) and the Arcade Card need adapters.

Mega Drive Genesis Partial. See the video games FAQ.

Sega SG-1000 Sega Master Yes.

Game Gear Game Gear Yes.

Neo-Geo Neo-Geo Yes. (With some language changes.)

        *The Games*

The game cartridges are listed in the following format:

SHOW
Game system, "Japanese Title", "American title" (if any),
ordering information (Company, order number), price in yen
 comments

"Digital Comic": This type of game is almost unknown in the US (though I think
it did start here, with "Infocomics"). It's basically a semi-animated comic
book/anime hybrid where the player chooses the next step off of a menu.

"Adventure Game": This notation typically means something with a lot of menu
selection; if on CD it's probably similar to a digital comic or to live action
games like Night Trap or It Came from the Desert.

*Not* Anime related, but mistaken for it:
Battle Mania (Trouble Shooters, Genesis) [no, this was _not_ a Dirty
Pair game though it certainly looks like one...]
Gunhed (Blazing Lasers, TG-16) [name is deceptive]

      *Games made into animation*

Sometimes the game comes first and the animation afterwards. There are lots
of these, too. Games made into manga, often serialized in game magazines, are
also very common. This list is currently _very_ incomplete. Information is
needed.

* Dragon Quest is the Japanese name, Dragon Warrior the US name. 13 episodes
of this were dubbed and broadcast briefly in the USA. There is more than one
game and more than one Dragon Quest series and I have no idea which is based
on which.

** No, Animeigo cannot bring Wizardry to the US. Robert Woodhead would need
the permission of the US co-owners, which he doesn't have.

*** The manga for these games was translated, colored, and serialized in
Gamepro magazine for December 1990-November 1991. I have no idea what the
original titles of these games or manga were.

**** There will be an animated SF2 movie eventually. There are two SF2 manga,
one translated from Chinese and one Japanese original. The Japanese one is
being released in the USA. (Neither has any connection to the Malibu comic.)

*5 AD Vision is releasing the OAVs in the USA. (Graduation is renamed End of
Summer).

Questionable: Madara. Can someone confirm whether the game or the anime/manga
came first?
