            TIE-DrEING

Tie-dyeing creates a wonderfully unique fabric dcsign. No two
designs are alike!

Tie-dyed fabric can be made into just about anything, clothing,
hats, bags, fabric-covered button jewelry, hair bows, Roman
shades, pillows, place mats and napkins.

Purchased clothing, like T-shirts, sweatshirts, knit shorts and
socks can be tie-dyed, too. rou'll be delightfully pleased with
the results!

    TIE-DY DESIGNS
Choose one of these designs and you're on your way to creating
brightly colored fabric designs for fashion, jewelry or the home.
General instructions are located in the second portion of this
documentation.

Sunburst

Pick up a point irom the center of where
rou want the design to be. Tie string or
wrap rubber bands tightly around fabric at
various points.

Stripes

Accordion pleat fabric in 2" to 3" folds.
Wrap rubber bands tightly around folded
fabric. Space rubber bands evenly or
randomly. The wider the rubber bands, the
wider the stripes will be.

Marblized Effect

Start at bottom and crumple up all the fab-
ric. Wrap with rubber bands to keep fabric
crumpled. Dye and rinse fabric as directed,
cutting off rubber bands after first rinse. To
add a second dye color, recrumple fabric and
wrap with rubber bands. Dye and rinse as
directed.

Hearts

Draw heart shape on right side of fabric ~
using a water soluble fabric marking pen.
Reginning at bottom of heart, sew a 1/8"
running stitch with quilting thread along the
marked line. Pull thread as tight as
possible. Making sure tiny even gathers are
formed around the heart: knot thread.
Pick up center of heart, making sure
marked lines match up and center is free
from pleats. Wrap rubber band tightly
arourd gathered heart line. Be sure rubber
band covers 1/4" of the pleats.

Checks

Acorrdion pleat fabric in 2" to 3" folds.
To get a sharp line, press folds with an iron.
Then accordion pleat strip into a square.
Press folds with an iron. Wrap string
around the square package in both direc-
tions.


Spirals

Decide where you want the center of the
spiral to be. Place fingers around center
point and slowly begin towist fabric in a
spiral dircction. Tie fabric to hold spiral
design together.

      SUPPLIES NEEDED
Any brand Cold Water Dye - 1 package
of dye for 6-8 OZ. dry fabric (about 1 to 2 yds.
broadcloth fabric OR 1 T-shirt). For heavier
weight fabrics, use 2 or more dye packages.
Fabric - 100% untreated cotton, woven or
knit, Or purchased item (at least 50% cotton)
Salt, 4 Tablespoons per dye package
Rubber gloves
Rubber bands Or string
Large container for dyeing


HOW TO TIE-DYE FABRIC
1. Wash fabric with mild deteygent and dry.
   Do not use a fabric softeneR. Iron
   fabric lightly.
2. Select a tie-dye design. Fold fabyic and
   tie with rubber bands or string.
3, Prepare dye bath accoyding to
   Package instructions.
4. Wet fabric and place in dye bath for one
   hour as directed, or use the micyowave.
   To tie-dye in the microwave: Use a glass
   bowl. Prepare dye bath according to package
   fabric Instructions. Wet fabric and place
   in dye bath. Work dye into fabric. Cover
   bowl with plastic wrap and microwave on
   "high" for 4 minutes.
   Note: do not dye rayon, wool or garments with
   metal trim in the microwave.
5. Rinse fabric, cutting off rubber bands
   after first rinse.


