2 colors of Watercolours hand-dyed pima cotton or
2 colors af Waterlilies hand dyed silko
1 color of either Watercolours or Waterlilies plus another
thread such as six-strand cotton floss, Soie Cristale silk
    or a metallic

AMOUNT OF YARN
Each unit (without border) requires a total of about 4 yards of fiber.
In nost cases the relative proportions will be 3 yards of Watercolours or
Waterlilies to one yard of contrasting fiber. However, for maximum flexi-
bility it is advised that you have on hand 4 yards of each colour/fiber
you plan to use "per unit".

****DOUBLE THIS AMOUNT IF YOU ARE ADDING BORDERS

In most cases you can probably get two ornaments from one skein of
Watercolours or Waterlilies and one skein of floss, but it is better to
be prepared with extra fiber to allow for mistakes, changes and/or
embellishments such as matching braid trim or tassels.

For the 4 and 5 inch square poeces two skeins of Watercolours (3 skeins
of Waterlilies) and 3 skeins of floss or equivalent yardage of other
fiber should be enough, but again it is always a good idea to have
extra on hand.

This pattern can also be worked on #13 canvas for pillows. In this case
the thickness of the fiber must be adjusted. Use 2 plies of Watercolours,
6 plies of Waterlilies and instead of multple plies of floss, a #3 pearl
cotton can be substituted or a thicker metallic thread for the size you
would use on #18 canvas.

ABOUT Watercolours

Watercolours is a three-ply hand-dyed pima cotton, The colors are permanent
and washable in cool water. To use on #18 canvas, separate the strands and
use only one ply in your needle. If you cut the skein once at the knot you
will have ten one-yard lengths.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    . About Waterlilies

Waterlilies is a 12-ply hand-dyed silk. The colors are pennanent and washable
in cool water. To use on #18 canvas, separate the strands and use four plies
in your needle. For flat stitches, you may find that you get better coverage
with five plies. If you cut the skein once at the knot you will have six
one-yard lengths, If you find this too long, untie the knot and cut the
silk to comfortable working lengths.

HINTS

Since you will be turning your canvas frequently while stitching you may find
it helfpul to label the top of your canvas so you can orient yourself quickly.

Needlepoint stitches distort canvas. The amount of distortion can be greatly
diminished if you mount your needlework on a frame while working. Artist's
stretcher strips are fine and most needlework shops carry a variety of
frames suitable for this purpose.

BASIC UNIT

The following directions give instructions for working both UNits A and B.
(see K1.GIF and K2.GIF)

All of the illustrated designs are composed of an arrangement of one or both
of these two motifs. To get the kaleidoscopic effect of the design, each unit
is oriented on the canvas slightly differently than its neighbor. Usually
this is accomplished by a single quarter-turn of the canvas.

The diagrarms following the instructions for the basic unit chart out the
arrangements of each of the illustrated pieces. Use these ideas as a
stepping stone for your own imagination. Many more combinations than are
shown here are possible.

BEGINNING

Mark the center four threads of your canvas and the 18th thread diagonally
away from each of the center threads ( including one center tkread you've
already counted.
