==========
Greene County has 108 holes of public golf for a county population of 55,000.
The seven public GC range from a Par 3 Nine to a Rees Jones designed 27-hole
layout. NOLICHUCKEY GC is the senior of the seven and is located 5 miles south
of Greeneville on State Hwy 70 towards Ashville, NC. It was built in 1964 by
Ronald E. Wilhoit, who has served as club manager from opening day April 1,
1965 to the present. The course routing was drawn by the Scotsman Alec McKay.
The competitive course record is 63 including an Eagle on the 318yd Par 4 #2.

PAR, YARDAGE and ROUTING for each hole are on the COURSE OVERHEAD. Nolichuckey
was designed for the enjoyment of golfers of all abilities. There are no forced
carries and the course is short at less tham 6500 yds. The greens are small and
true, the fairways are wide and hard with lots of roll, and the sand and water
are accents as much as obstacles. For realism, JNSE course conditions should be
set to DRY as the bent grass greens are fast and the fairways are not watered.
Even certified duffers have been known to reach the downhill and downwind 495yd
Par 5 6th hole in two when the fairways firm up during the summer season. (and
then I 3-putted for a par.)

Nolichuckey is a 9 hole golf course. The existing holes will play as your front
nine. Because JNSE requires 18 to function, I have used those existing holes
as the basis for the back side. Rather than just duplicate the nines, I have
taken the liberty of remodeling a few holes. I moved a green, built a new tee,
enlarged the water hazards, planted a few christmas trees, and dug a few
bunkers where I thought they would do the most business. I didn't want the 18
to be a anything like a "fantasy" course, but the back nine is different, even
though the real estate and the hole overheads are virtually the same.

Greeneville, Tennessee is located 65 miles East of Knoxville and about 65 miles
North of Asheville, NC. Nearby are The Great Smoky Mountains National Park,
Gatlinburg, and Dollywood. Greeneville is the home of Andrew Johnson, who
became the 17th President of the United States after the assassination of
Abraham Lincoln, and the birthplace of Davy Crockett, hero of the Alamo. The
National Park Service maintains several sites involved. Johnson's presidential
library is on the campus of Tusculum College, the oldest college in the state.

Acknowledgements

The Background is from THE VICTORIAN by Mark Alan Willett.
To find a background with just the right trees and with mountains covered by
a smoky haze, and with the mountains in just the right orientation on the
background, was a great stroke of good fortune. Thank you, Mr. Willett.

Thanks to the original designers of the following objects which were imported
from these great courses and modified for use here:

AFTON MOUNTAIN by Gene Rodriguez III: The light green hardwood.
ATLANTA CC by Dan Raftery: The weeping willow.
THE VICTORIAN by Mark Alan Willett: The Christmas tree and the tall pine.
PRESTWICK GC by Brent Blackburn: The tall grass.
MUIRFIELD, SCOTLAND by Lee Ritze: The light green bush.
OAKCREEK CC by Paul Conrad: A small evergreen which supplied the
trunk for my two primary trees.

Thanks to John Kunyik for his powerful JNSE utility: the JNSEDT Toolbox.

Gratitude is also extended to:

Ronald E. Wilhoit, Nolichuckey GC builder and club manager,
James A. Sauceman, West Greene H.S. golf coach,
Wayne Phillips, Greeneville SUN Sports Editor,
Buddy R. Bradley,
and to "The PRO" Dan Raftery
for encouraging, reviewing, and/or play-testing the project.

============
This is my first JNSE course design and I would appreciate any feedback you
wish to offer on Nolichuckey GC. I have play-tested the course with Computer
Jack and his friends quite a few rounds, but if you're anywhere near the beaten
path and find a really weird spot, please write me a note about it. The problem
with incorporating so many adjacent fairways is that it's hard to play from all
of the places a really wild shot might end up.

IN LOVING MEMORY
The course is dedicated to my late father, Claude "Tiny" Day (Sports Editor
of The Greeneville SUN from 1947-1990), who taught me the game of golf on
Nolichuckey GC when I was a boy. Every young man should be so lucky as to learn
the game from his father. He enjoyed playing Nolichuckey and Aced #3 twice.
