WHISKERS INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS:

Whiskers has three different modes of operation. Select the mode
you wish to use.

	1. Three (3) button mouse, proceed to the Whiskers.exe
	   Installation section.

	2. Two (2) button mouse with Middle button simulation,
proceed to the Whiskers.drv Installation section.

	3. Two (2) button mouse WITHOUT Middle button simulation,
proceed to the Whiskers.exe Installation section.

Whiskers.drv Installation:

The Whiskers.drv file is a complete replacement for your current 2
button driver. Only use this driver if you have a Microsoft com-
patible 2 button mouse. Once this driver is installed and
Whiskers is activated, you will be able to simulate a Middle but-
ton on your two (2) button mouse. Whiskers works with the new
driver (Whisker.drv) to allow the Middle button simulation. If
Whiskers is not active, the driver (Whiskers.drv) will operate the
same way that the old two (2) button driver did. If you have a
two (2) button mouse, but do not want the Middle button simula-
tion, proceed to the Whiskers.exe Installation section and do not
install the new driver.

Close Windows and at the DOS prompt change directories so that the
current directory is where Windows is installed. Type the command
SETUP and press the Enter key. On the screen that will appear,
you will be shown a list of your system configurations and asked
if they are correct. Use the Up Arrow key to select the entry for
the mouse, then press the Enter key. Another screen will appear
with a list of available drivers. At the bottom of the list is an
entry for "Other (Requires disk from manufacturer)". Select this
entry and press the Enter key. Place the Whiskers Disk in drive
A:. A new screen will ask where the new driver can be found, the
default is A:. Edit the path if necessary and press the Enter
key. The setup program will now copy and install the new Whiskers
driver for you.

Now proceed to the Whiskers.exe Installation section.

Whiskers.exe Installation:

To install Whiskers, copy the Whiskers.exe and Whiskers.dll files
to the directory you want Whiskers to be in. Then use the File
Manager or Program Manager to start Whiskers. Whiskers.exe uses
the file named Whiskers.dll. Be sure to keep the Whiskers.exe and
Whiskers.dll in the same directory.

To run Whiskers, double click on its icon in the Program Manager
or the Whiskers.exe file in the File Manager. Another Whiskers
icon will appear at the botton of your screen. At this point
there will be bars showing on the Whiskers icon. The bars
indicate that the mouse has been captured and that Whiskers is
running. To view or change the default settings, see the
"Programming the Mouse Buttons" section below.

Whiskers requires 18.2K of memory to run. The Whiskers.drv file
requires 4K to run, which is .2K more than the old mouse driver
required.

PROGRAMMING THE RIGHT and/or MIDDLE MOUSE BUTTONS:

Click once on the Whiskers icon at the bottom of your screen and
the system menu will pop up. Select the Buttons... command and a
dialog box titled "Whisker's Mouse College" will appear. The
Right and Middle button key combinations have been programmed
with default key values. You may change any of these defaults
that you wish.

For example, to program the Right button to be the DELETE key,
click on the down arrow of the listbox that is in the "no shifts"
row and in the Right button column. Scroll the listbox until you
find the DELETE entry and then select it. Now press the OK
button.

To program the Shift+Right button combination, follow the same
steps as above, but make your selection in the listbox in the
"shift" row and Right button column. Follow these steps for
programming each of the combinations. Repeat these steps for
programming the Middle button on a three (3) button mouse.

Note: When programming the mouse button, if you find that a
selection appears not to work, try selecting or unselect-
ing the Pass Shift States checkboxes. Also, with some
older model keyboards, you may find that you will need to
use the Home, End, etc. commands that are located on the
numeric pad (with Num Lock off).

COPY, CUT & PASTE:

There are two ways to set the the Right or Middle mouse buttons to
do the Copy, Cut and Paste commands. The first, is to select the
Copy, Cut or Paste command from the selection list. The second, is
to select the Pass Shifts State checkbox and then set the Right
mouse button on the Shift line to be Delete, for example. This
second method would produce the Cut command when the Shift+Right
button combination is pressed. In this example the Pass Shifts
State checkbox is selected and so the Cut command is sent. If
the checkbox is unselected the Delete key would be sent.

These two methods were provided, because some applications will
work with the simple Copy, Cut or Paste commands. But some ap-
plications won't. So the Ctrl/Insert, Shift/Del or Shift/Insert
combinations are used in those cases. Whether an application
works with Copy or Ctrl/Insert, Cut or Shift/Delete, or Paste or
Shift/Insert, is a direct result of how that application was
written.

PASS SHIFT STATES:

By default the Pass Shift States checkboxes are selected. An
example of passing or not passing the keyboard Shift States is as
follows:

Select the Pass Shifts States checkbox in the shift row of the
Right button column, and then select the DELETE entry from the
listbox. Then press the OK button. Now when the Shift+Right
mouse button combination is pressed, the Cut command will be exe-
cuted.

Now unselect the Pass Shift States checkbox in the shift row of
the Right mouse button column, but leave the entry of DELETE.
Under this condition, when the Shift+Right mouse button combina-
tion is pressed, the Delete command will be executed after
letting up on the Shift and Right button.

When a Pass Shift State checkbox is selected, the Shift keys are
associated with that button definition. When a Pass Shift State
checkbox is unselected, the Shift keys are not associated with
that button definition.

SHIFT LEFT BUTTON & SHIFT LEFT DOUBLE CLICK

If you want to use either the Shift Left Button or the Shift Left
Double Click selections, it is recommended that you set these
selections on the shift line of either the Right or Middle button
and select the Pass Shift States checkbox. Otherwise erratic
results may occur depending on the applications that you are
working with.

MIDDLE BUTTON SIMULATION:

Whiskers can simulate a Middle button on a two (2) button mouse.
To do the Middle button simulation press both the left and Right
mouse buttons down at the same time. This is called a 2 button
click. To do the other Middle button combinations, press any of
the shift keys and then do a 2 button click. To program the
simulated Middle button, follow the steps for programming the
Middle button of a three (3) button mouse.

If you find that the 2 button click rate is too fast or too slow,
click on the Whiskers icon at the bottom of the screen and select
the Buttons... command, at the bottom of the dialog box is a
slider bar. Move the button on the slider bar to the left to
decrease to 2 button click rate or to the Right to increase the
rate.

It is recommended that you have the 2 button click rate set just
slightly faster than the double click rate. The 2 button click
rate default is set faster than the default double click rate that
Windows is installed with.

It is recommended that the 2 button click rate be set at the
higher end of the slider bar (faster). The default setting is
1/10 of a second. If the rate is slowed down to much, you will
notice irritating delays with mouse drag operations.

EXCLUSION LIST:

Click once on the Whiskers icon at the bottom of your screen and
the system menu will pop up. Select Exclude... and a dialog box
will appear. Follow the instructions in the dialog box for ex-
cluding certain programs from Whiskers attention.

You can also turn Whiskers ON and OFF manually by double clicking
on the Whiskers icon at the bottom of the screen. Or Clicking
once on the icon at the bottom of the screen and then selecting
Turn Whiskers ON or OFF from the system menu.

LOAD LINE:

You can put Whiskers on the load line of the WIN.INI file. Making
a Whiskers entry on the load line will run Whiskers when Windows
is first started. It is recommended that you place the Whiskers
entry first on the LOAD line, do not use the RUN line.

HIDE WHISKERS FEATURE:

Whiskers has a "Hide Whiskers" checkbox in the buttons dialog box
and a "Hide Whiskers" command on the menu. These options allow
you to hide the Whiskers icon. This reduces screen clutter. The
"Hide Whiskers" command on the menu will hide the Whiskers icon
immediately, but will only stay in affect for the present Windows
session. The "Hide Whiskers" checkbox in the buttons dialog box
requires that a Whiskers entry is on the LOAD line of the WIN.INI
file. This option is permanent until the checkbox is unselected.
With this option when Windows is started, the Whiskers icon will
be hidden automatically. When using either of the "Hide Whiskers"
options, if you find that you need to change a button setting or
edit the Exclusion List, you can start Whiskers again by double
clicking the icon in the Program Manager and the Whiskers icon
will appear at the bottom of the screen. Any editing can now be
done.

MIDDLE BUTTON OF YOUR MOUSE DOESN'T WORK:

If you can not get the middle button of your mouse to work it is
likely that you will need to call the mouse manufacturer. When
you contact them, request a new Windows 3.0 driver that supports
all three mouse buttons.
