. Improving Start-up Time

Because of the additional functions and features Norton Desktop
provides, you should expect Windows to take somewhat longer to
load with Norton Desktop as the shell than with Windows Program
	 Manager as the shell.

However, by using the following tips you should be able to reduce
	 the start-up time substantially:

         A. Make sure that Norton Desktop files are unfragmented.
          - Norton Desktop loads faster if its DLL files are contiguous on
the disk. Putting DLL and EXE files at the front of the disk may
            also reduce the start-up time.
          - Run SpeedDisk from the Emergency disk to defragment files.
               1. When you encounter the Recommendation dialog box, click
                  Configure.
               2. From the Configure menu, choose Directory Order. Make sure
the Windows and NDW directories are at the top. If they're
                  not, move them there.
               3. From the Configure menu, choose Files to Place First. Type
"*.EXE" and on the next line "*.DLL" (don't include the
                  quotation marks).
               4. From the Optimize menu, choose Optimization Method and
                  select Full with File reorder.
               5. Choose Begin optimization.

         B. Make sure the cache size is ideal for your system.
           - Experiment with your disk cache program to find the optimum cache
size for your system configuration. The size of the cache depends
primarily on the amount of RAM installed and available in the
             computer.

Setting the optimum cache size usually accelerates start-up time
             dramatically.

This can be done for Microsoft's SmartDrive by specifying the
second parameter in the command line. The SmartDrive command line
is located in the CONFIG.SYS file.

             For example: Device=Smartdrv.sys 2048 1024 where 1024 is the
             second parameter.

           - Use the following chart as a guide to set the size of the second
             parameter:

         RAM in
         Computer: Cache Size: Example:
         --------- ----------- -------------------------------
         2 MG 0 Device=Smartdrv.sys 1024
         3 MG 512 Device=Smartdrv.sys 2048 512
         4 MG 1024 Device=Smartdrv.sys 3072 1024
         5 MG 1536 Device=Smartdrv.sys 3584 1536
         6 MG 2048 Device=Smartdrv.sys 4096 2048
         7 MG 3072 Device=Smartdrv.sys 5120 3072
         8 MG 3584 Device=Smartdrv.sys 5632 3584
         9 MG 4096 Device=Smartdrv.sys 6144 4096
        10 MG 5120 Device=Smartdrv.sys 7168 5120

         C. Use a disk cache that uses read-ahead technology.
          - Good examples of these are: NCACHE in the Norton Utilities
Version 6.0, Super PC Kwik, and HyperDisk.
          - SmartDrive that comes with Windows 3.0 does not use read-ahead
            technology.

         D. Delete any Quick Access groups that you are not using.
          - Norton Desktop loads every Quick Access group into memory when
it starts. This provides instant access to groups from the
Windows menu. You can significantly reduce load-up time by
removing groups that are infrequently or never used.

    Improving Shutdown Time

          - Running The Norton Desktop with the "Save Configuration on Exit"
check box on will cause some delays when you exit Windows.
          - You can reduce exit time by unchecking this check box. Choose
Preferences from the Configure menu (only available in Full
            Menus).
          - This makes exiting Norton Desktop faster than exiting Windows
when Program Manager is the shell. (When you need or want to
save your desktop configuration, choose Save Configuration from
            the Configure menu.)

Improving the General Speed of Windows

         A. Have enough RAM installed in your computer.
          - Insufficient Random Access Memory (RAM) can cause Windows to run
            very slowly.
          - Most Windows experts recommend the following minimum memory
            requirements:

                    Standard Mode: 2 megabytes
                386 Enhanced Mode: 4 megabytes

         B. Use a Permanent Swap File.
          - If you are running in 386 Enhanced Mode you may be able to
improve performance by using a Permanent Swap File. Use the
following procedure to create one (for Windows 3.0 only):
             1. Make sure you have run SpeedDisk to defragment your hard disk.
             2. Exit Windows. At the DOS prompt type: WIN /R SWAPFILE.
             3. Create the Swap File and exit Windows.

         C. Configure Erase Protect (EP) for your system.
          - EP is a DOS memory-resident program (TSR) that works in tandem
with SmartErase. It protects files as they are erased, placing
them in a "Trashcan" for a pre-determined amount of time. After
a file has been protected for that time, it is purged.
          - Many Windows' programs continuously create temporary files that
are used for a short period of time and then erased. This causes
the "Trashcan" to protect and manage a huge number of erased
temporary files. Since this may cause your system to slow down,
we recommend that SmartErase be configured in the following
            manner:
             1. Select SmartErase... from the Configure menu.
             2. Select the All Files Except Those Listed option button.
             3. In the File Extensions text box, type: *.TMP *.SWP *.BIN
               *.DAT *.DAT *.QAG *.GRP
Also, add any other extensions that you know are temporary files.
