Classic Above Board: Common SETUP Problems

   ARCNET & TESTAB, INSTALL

With an Arcnet board installed, TESTAB will show a pattern of bad
chips, or perhaps will show the entire Above Board as containing bad
chips. Also, the discontinued INSTALL and SETUPAT programs will
report bad memory and may not install the expanded memory software.
This is not a conflict with the Above Board and the Arcnet board, it
is a conflict between the way these software packages ascertain
information about the computer and the way the Arcnet card responds.

Solution: Remove the Arcnet board when running TESTAB, INSTALL or
SETUPAT, then put the Arcnet board back into the computer
when finished running these software packages (NOTE: Always
make sure the computer is turned off when removing or
               installing computer components).

SIGMA COLOR 400 & INSTALL, SETBOARD, TESTAB

INSTALL, SETBOARD, and TESTAB cause a blank screen soon after loading
if a Sigma 400 is present in the system. EMM works fine with the
      Sigma 400.

      SOLUTIONS:
SETBOARD; there isn't one. The display will go away although the
program is still active. It is not practical to walk through
SETBOARD without seeing where the display is, since SETBOARD is smart
enough to choose it's current selections from the way the board is
      currently configured.

INSTALL; it would be necessary to manually install the Intel software
without the use of the INSTALL program, or use a different video
      adapter.

TESTAB; Sigma 400 will cause a blank screen after asking operator to
choose either 1 - for a PC system, or 2 - for an AT system. It then
(invisibly) diplays the switch settings for the AB with the LOWEST
I/O port address, and asks a question.

For a PC system: "Do you want to continue? (Y or N)"
For an AT system: "Is there a piggy attached? (Y or N)"

If the operator chooses a response to the above question, the program
will continue and the screens will become visible again. The
remainder of the test program should run correctly.

If the program fails to continue, then it is possible that the system
is not totally IBM compatible, and the invisible screen contained the
error message, "Your system is not totally IBM compatible."

   DOS 3.2, 3.3 AND INSTALL

All Above Boards are compatible with DOS 3.2 and 3.3. Some earlier
versions of our INSTALL and SETUP programs gave an error message if
used with DOS 3.2 or 3.3.

      The solutions are:
You can either install the Above Board software manually, download
the latest Above Board software from the Intel BBS, or boot the
computer using a DOS 3.0 or 3.1 system disk before running INSTALL or
SETUP, (once the Above Board software is installed it would be okay
to boot with DOS 3.2 or 3.3).

   MSG. 41

This error message usually indicates the presence of memory-resident
      software such as Sidekick.

      SOLUTION:
Boot the computer with a clean DOS diskette. Re-run SETUPAT.
Note: If customer has the IBM 3278-79 emulator board, SETUPAT won't
work. Do a manual install using the EMM 'E' parameter.

      OR:
Download the latest software from the Intel BBS. The program SOFTSET
has replaced the installation utility which replaced SETUPAT (SETUPAT
and the software that shipped with it are remarkably old programs and
      should be updated).

   MSG. 4

You've added a non-Above Board to your computer since you last ran
SETUPAB. This board contains RAM or ROM that conflicts with memory
needed by the Expanded Memory Manager. The Expanded Memory Manager
hasn't been installed. Refer to Appendix C in your Above Board
      Manual.

Cause: There are two possibilities. Since you last ran SETUPAB:

The CONFIG.SYS file on your system disk has been edited,
and an incorrect parameter has been inserted in the
DEVICE=EMM.SYS command. This incorrect parameter makes it appear
that you've added a board with conflicting memory.

You've added a board other than an Above Board, and it's
conflicting with some or the memory the Expanded Memory Manager
needs. (The memory locations SETUPAB checked previously are no
longer vacant.) This problem is not the result of a
          malfunctioning Above Board.

Action: Try these solutions in the order listed:

Use the SETUPAB program again to set up your Above Board
          software on your system disk.

Free up memory for your Expanded Memory Manager. The
Expanded Memory Manger needs a vacant block of 64k bytes in your
computer's higher memory -- one of the eight ranges available.
Most likely, these memory locations are being occupied by some
newly added board(s) in your system.

   MSG. 405

SETUPPS may be returning this message when there is no real problem.
This appears to be especially true in the case of COMPAQ Deskpro
86's. Check the CONFIG.SYS file to see if CLOCK.SYS was installed in
spite of this message. If not, try a manual installation.

   MSG. 425

Nearly always an erroneous message! After checking to see if there
IS more than one board trying to provide memory, try manually
installing the Above Board software or download the latest software
from the BBS, (which doesn't have this problem).
