the following is a release by the united states  geological  survey,
national earthquake information center:  a major earthquake occurred
in the joshua tree area of southern california about 25 miles  north
of  palm  springs  or about 100 miles east of los angeles at 5:58 am
MDT today, jun 28, 1992.  the magnitude was computed at 7.4  on  the
richter  scale.   the  quake  was recorded by the u.  s.  geological
survey at golden, colorado.   there  are  reports  of  injuries  and
damage  in  the epicentral area and in los angeles.  this earthquake
is in the same general area  as  the  april  23,1992  magnitude  6.3
earthquake.today's  earthquake  was  felt  in  a  very large area of
southern california, nevada and arizona.
