PA. WARNS AGAINST EATING CERTAIN FISH (2/14/92)

    HARRISBURG (AP) -- State agenies on Thursday warned 
Pennsylvanians not to eat carp, white bass and catfish from parts of 
the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio rivers, despite a drop in 
carcinogens in the fish...
    State health and enviornmental officials say they want tests to 
show a reduction in contaminants for two consecutive years before 
they lift a warning issued in 1900 and 1991.
    The warnings were issued after some fish showed high levels of 
polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, and chlordane -- two suspected 
carcinogens...
    PCPs were sidely used in transformer oils and other electrical 
products before 1977, when they wre banned. Chlordane, a pesticide 
widely used in the past, is now strictly regulated by the federal
