  Have ever wondered about these protocols who claim to be the fastest or the
best?  Well if you ever get boared enough to try this experiment like I did
then you can prove these figures yourself.
   First some information on the equipment and the protocols used.
The equipment:

        1. 2 286 machines running at 12mhz.
           1 8088 laptop running at 8mhz. (used to verify results)
        2. 1 6ft null modem serial cabel.
        3. The test files used were:
           USBBS91.lst - Darwins BBS list from 12 DEC 91
           Imperium 3.49 (Imp349.arj) BBS Door game.

The protocols:

        1. Tmodem 7.10
        2. DSZ of 10-15-91
        3. Superk 4.45
        4. Hslink 1.0D1
        5. Hyperp 1.1e
        6. Mpt 1.10

Heres the results of this wet and rainey day in New London,CT.

        1. Hslink @ 2400 Baud.

  If you are looking for Zmodem in this you won't find it, because all of these
claim to be faster than Zmodem.  Believe it or not they are faster than Zmodem,
but DSZ mobyturbo zmodem at its best catches the above at thier worst.
  Other protocols not featured here because they don't support null modem 
  transfers, or lack of documentation.
    Bimodem, Jmodem-c, Wxmodem, Nmodem, Cmodem, K9Xmodem.

            It is plain enough that even the blind can see it.
Tmodem is hands down the fastest protocol offering both single and batch
transfers (See footnote at bottom for more).

                    What the blind can't see maybe.
  But if you are really serious about transfering files then take a look at
the Hslink protocol.  It gives you a good solid single and batch transfer rates
as well as being able to upload and download simutaneously.  The loss of speed
in the bi-directional transfer over the one way transfer is little to none.
  It should be said that Bi-modem would probably perform close to Hslink but
don't quote me on that.

                     Other information and beliefs.
  In my opinion,  A PROGRAM WORTH RUNNING IS WORTH OWNING!  So if you are 
setting a BBS or are a serious user of the phone lines there are only three
or four programs that you need:

        1.  SuperK Hst
            This program gives you more protocols than you will ever want to
            use as well as giving you a solid performance.

        2. DSZ or GSZ
           These are both the same program with one difference, that being GSZ
           gives you a graphical interface.  This program gives you X, Y, and
           Zmodem along with Zmodem mobyturbo and Ymodem-g capabiliteis.  Of
           all the zmodem transfers, mobyturbo gives you that little bit extra.

        3. Hslink
           Though still only in its Beta testing (the 1.0 versions are the last
           set of Betas) this protocol is the most exciting thing to hit the
           phone lines since Bimodem.  The transfers are easy to set up and
           suffer no great loss in bi-directional transfers.  If used
           corrrectly you can almost double you transfer.

        4. Tmodem
           The numbers prove it folks.  Its the fastest of them all.

FOOTNOTES
# Tmodem transfers approach or even exceed the claim of 100%.
  The times for tmodem ranged 8-15 seconds beyond that stated.  This time comes
  from the wait once th transfer ends for the program to exit back to dos.

* In todays world 98% of all files transferred have been zipped or arjed or
  something similar to that.  In light of this fact those programs that
  support compression had the compression turned off.  This was done since it
  can but slow down the transfer. Thus the lack of times for compression on
  section.

If you are truely moving files between two computers like this, I found mpt to 
be the best at this.
