TITLE IBM PERSONAL SYSTEM/2 2.3GB FULL-HIGH SCSI TAPE DRIVE
ABSTRACT The family of Personal System/2 (R) (PS/2 (R)) Small Computer
System Interface (SCSI) storage options is enhanced through the
introduction of a high performance, large capacity SCSI tape drive.
           The PS/2 (R) 2.3GB Full-High SCSI Tape Drive (#1120, 6451121) is an
internal 5.25-inch SCSI tape drive that features high performance and
accepts a large capacity data cartridge to meet customer requirements
for a fast backup/restore option. This option is supported on PS/2
Models 95 and 3511-003, and includes a blank data cartridge and a
cleaning cartridge. The drive supports 8mm helical-scan camcorder
data-type cartridges that adhere to the American National Standards
Institute (ANSI) Helical-Scan Digital Computer 8mm Tape Cartridge
Format standard X3B5/89-136. The 2.3GB SCSI Tape Drive, when
combined with Sytos Plus/IBM OS/2 (R) File Backup Utilities (#1355,
15F7193) (obtained separately), provides a high performance, large
capacity, easy-to-use tape backup/restore system. Refer to
Programming Announcement 290-472, dated August 21, 1990, for detailed
           information.
                  Availability Date: October 30, 1990.

           DESCRIPTION
           INVESTMENT PROTECTION
           The PS/2 2.3GB Full-High SCSI Tape Drive and Sytos Plus/IBM OS/2 File
Backup Utilities help protect customers' data investment in the event
of catastrophic system failure. This internal SCSI tape drive, when
used in a save/restore, archiving, local area network (LAN)
environment, and combined with Sytos Plus/IBM OS/2 File Backup
Utilities, provides a high performance, large capacity, easy-to-use
tape backup/restore system. The PS/2 2.3GB Full-High SCSI Tape Drive
can be installed in PS/2 Models 95 and 3511-003.
           USER PRODUCTIVITY
User productivity is enhanced by the high performance (245KB per
second data transfer rate) and large capacity (2.3GB formatted
capacity) of the PS/2 2.3GB Full-High SCSI Tape Drive option. This
tape drive, when combined with Sytos Plus/IBM OS/2 File Backup
           Utilities (#1355, 15F7193) (obtained separately), provides a
           convenient backup/restore capability for PS/2 Models 95 and 3511-003.
In addition, one cleaning cartridge and one blank tape cartridge is
included to provide the capability to use this tape drive upon
           installation.
           GROWTH ENABLEMENT
The PS/2 2.3GB Full-High SCSI Tape Drive option provides growth
enablement for PS/2 Models 95 and 3511-003 by adhering to the ANSI
SCSI standard (X3.131-1986), which supports up to seven SCSI devices
attached to a SCSI adapter. Customers now have the capability to add
a high performance, high capacity, secondary data storage device to
           their existing system configuration.

cartridges, which adhere to the ANSI Helical-Scan Digital Computer
8mm Tape Cartridge Format standard, X3B5/89-136.
           SECURITY, AUDITABILITY AND CONTROL
Security and auditability features of the system in which this
           product is installed are:
o A mechanical lock to allow the user to lock the system cover
o A user-invoked password function used to prevent the use of the
               system by unauthorized persons.
LIMITATIONS: SCSI, as defined in the ANSI standard X3.131-1986,
provides for multiple SCSI adapters (initiators) on the SCSI bus.
The SCSI bus may be internal or external to the system unit. The
PS/2 SCSI adapters are in conformance with this standard and have an
           external port.
A data security exposure exists even with Power-On Password
installed, since external SCSI adapters can attach through the
external SCSI port and gain undetected read or write access to data
stored on internal and external SCSI devices.
Physical access to the system and external SCSI devices must
be controlled to limit this exposure.
User management is responsible for evaluation, selection and
implementation of security features, administrative procedures and
appropriate controls in application systems and communications
           facilities.
