TITLE IBM PERSONAL SYSTEM/2 ADAPTER/A FOR ETHERNET NETWORKS

ABSTRACT IBM enhances its local area network (LAN) family of products
	   by announcing the Personal System/2 (R) (PS/2 (R)) Adapter/A for
	   Ethernet networks.
This LAN adapter provides the ability to attach PS/2 Micro
Channel (R) bus systems to Ethernet networks.
The adapter supports Ethernet Version 2 and IEEE 802.3
(CSMA/CD) interfaces, and data transfers at 10Mbps via 10Base5 (thick
cable), 10Base2 (thin cable), or 10BaseT (twisted pair) through an
Attachment Unit Interface (AUI) connection and user provided external
	   transceiver.
Remote Program Load (RPL) is included standard for systems
requiring this capability. Only the Banyan Vines (1) and Novell
NetWare (2) operating systems specified in the Programming
Requirements section currently support Remote Program Load.	The
feature will automatically issue a request to a loading Server device
anytime the workstation is reset, has no system disk available, or
the disk program boot has been disabled.
		  Operating System/2 (R) (OS/2 (R)) Extended Edition (EE), IBM
Disk Operating System (DOS), and PS/2 related programming are
	   supported.
	    (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines
	      Corporation.
	    (1) Registered trademark of Banyan Systems, Inc.
	    (2) Registered trademark of Novell Corporation.
Planned Availability Date: November 30, 1990.

OVERVIEW HIGHLIGHTS
The PS/2 Adapter/A for Ethernet networks provides:
o Additional business solutions for offering both Ethernet and
Token-Ring products to create intelligent LANs
o Growth by allowing Ethernet/802.3 customers to expand their
networks. Support of multiple interfaces and LAN software
	       facilitates growth and application exploitation
o Investment protection by supporting Ethernet Version 2 and 802.3
	       (CSMA/CD) interfaces
o Systems Management -- a user-friendly interface is provided for
installation and setup, configuration and diagnostic
	       capabilities, and maintainability.
	   DESCRIPTION
	   BUSINESS SOLUTIONS
The configurability, performance and reliability of Ethernet networks
ensure the customer has the essential capabilities to solve complex
	   business solutions.
This Ethernet offering complements Token-Ring where both
Ethernet and Token-Ring are installed or the decision to go to
Ethernet has been made for reasons of interoperability with existing
interfaces, smaller network demands, or potentially lower initial
	   cost.
RPL for Ethernet networks enables centralized configuration
management.	The resulting enhanced security and control capabilities
	   enable complex business solutions.
	   GROWTH ENABLEMENT
Support of Ethernet, interfaces and availability of LAN software
allows continued growth and connection capability for customers
	   seeking to expand their network.
	   INVESTMENT PROTECTION
Customers can run IBM LAN software on existing workstations with the
Ethernet adapters to protect their investment.
The LAN drivers offered provide compatibility and connectivity
to IBM OS/2, IBM DOS, and Novell NetWare 286 and 386.
	   SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT
The IBM Personal System/2 Adapter/A for Ethernet networks provides
ease of installation via easy-to-follow setup and configurability
procedures.	Service personnel skill level and training requirements
	   are minimized by:
o Configuration capabilities in installation procedures
	   o Diagnostic capabilities
	   o Power-On Self Test (POST)
	   o Simplicity in design.
Simplicity in installation (setup and configuration), and
availability of POST and diagnostics, will minimize service, increase
maintainability, and maximize productivity of customers. Finally,
RPL in a client/server environment enables configuration management
	   and enhanced security.
	   STATEMENT OF DIRECTION
IBM intends to enhance the OS/2 LAN Server to support RPL of both DOS
and OS/2 on an Ethernet network.

ISV software or all IBM programming support. Refer to the individual
product announcements or the sales manual to verify the support
	   status.
LIMITATIONS: A maximum of two PS/2 Adapter/A (Ethernet) cards can be
	   installed per system.
When a PS/2 Adapter/A card is installed in a system, other
than the PS/2 Model 55 LS, setup, configuration and diagnostics must
be done for all adapters locally from a reference diskette via a
	   diskette drive.
RPL is supported by Banyan Vines and Novell NetWare at this
	   time.
USER GROUP REQUIREMENTS: The PS/2 Adapter/A for Ethernet networks
addresses numerous customer requests and satisfies requirements
submitted by IBM User Groups (for example, SHARE, SEAS, GUIDE,
	   European G.U.I.D.E. and ASG).
	   PLANNING INFORMATION
CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES: The PS/2 Adapter/A for Ethernet networks
is designated as a customer setup (CSU) machine. Installation (CSU),
technical reference and service manuals are available.
CABLE ORDERS: Cables, terminators and external transceivers are not
supplied with the PS/2 Adapter/A for Ethernet networks.
CABLING: When setting up a network, it is recommended that you
follow the standards set by the American National Standards Institute
(ANSI)/Institute of Electronics and Electrical Engineers (IEEE).
The network adapter has two types of connectors. These
connectors enable the attachment of a computer to a network that uses
thin 50-ohm (IEEE standard 802.3 10BASE2 enhanced) shielded coaxial
	   cable, or thick 50-ohm (IEEE standard 802.3 10BASE5) double-shielded
	   coaxial cable.
The D-shell connector is used when connecting the workstation
to a thick (IEEE standard 802.3 10BASE5) coaxial cable. The BNC jack
is for attaching the BNC T-type connector provided with the computer.
A BNC T-type connector is then used to interconnect the thin (IEEE
standard 802.3 10BASE2) coaxial cable between the computers.
INSTALLABILITY: The PS/2 Adapter/A for Ethernet networks requires
	   about 30 minutes to install.
PROBLEM DETERMINATION: Diagnostics are included with the adapter
options diskette. In addition, Power-On System Test (POST)
diagnostics are resident in the adapter.
