TITLE IBM PERSONAL SYSTEM/2 80MB SCSI FIXED DISK DRIVE IBM PERSONAL
SYSTEM/2 160MB SCSI FIXED DISK DRIVE IBM PERSONAL SYSTEM/2 SCSI FIXED
           DISK DRIVE KIT D
ABSTRACT The Personal System/2 (R) (PS/2 (R)) family of Small Computer
System Interface (SCSI) fixed disk drives is enhanced through the
introduction of two new high performance, increased capacity SCSI
fixed disk drives. The PS/2 80MB SCSI Fixed Disk Drive (80 million
bytes) (#1045, 6451045) and 160MB SCSI Fixed Disk Drive (160 million
bytes) (#1046, 6451046) options feature faster average seek times and
greater storage capacity than the 60MB and 120MB SCSI Fixed Disk
Drive offerings. These new options, because of their SCSI interface
and common mechanical design, are compatible with and across a wide
           range of IBM PS/2 systems, such as the PS/2 Models 60, 65, 80, 90, 95
           and 3511-003.
IBM also announces the PS/2 SCSI Fixed Disk Drive Kit D
(#1119, 6451120). This kit supports the installation of either PS/2
           60MB SCSI Fixed Disk Drive (#1049, 6451049) or PS/2 120MB SCSI Fixed
           Disk Drive (#1050, 6451050) in a PS/2 Model 90, 95 or 3511-003.
                  Availability Date: October 30, 1990.

OVERVIEW HIGHLIGHTS
o By adhering to the industry standard SCSI interface and a common
mechanical design, the customer's investment is protected through
a common set of PS/2 SCSI fixed disk drive options.
o User productivity is improved with high performance (17/16ms
average seek time) and high capacity (over 30% more storage
capacity than the 60/120MB drives) SCSI Fixed Disk Drive options.
o Kit D provides compatibility of 60MB and 120MB SCSI Fixed Disk
               Drives in PS/2 Models 90, 95 and 3511-003.
           DESCRIPTION
           INVESTMENT PROTECTION
The PS/2 80MB SCSI Fixed Disk Drive and PS/2 160MB SCSI Fixed Disk
Drive options are high capacity, high performance SCSI drives that
can be installed in PS/2 Models 90, 95 and 3511-003, as well as in
PS/2 Models 60, 65 and 80. In addition, with the availability of the
PS/2 SCSI Fixed Disk Drive Kit D, which provides the capability to
install the PS/2 60MB and 120MB SCSI Fixed Disk Drives in PS/2
Models 90, 95 and 3511-003, investment protection is ensured through
a common set of supported SCSI fixed disk drives. These drives
adhere to the industry standard American National Standard Institute
(ANSI) SCSI interface (X3.131-1986), maintaining a high degree of
           hardware and software compatibility.
           GROWTH ENABLEMENT
The PS/2 80MB and 160MB SCSI Fixed Disk Drives provide system
configuration flexibility to meet expanding application and business
environment requirements. By adhering to the industry standard ANSI
SCSI interface (X3.131-1986) that supports up to seven SCSI devices
attached to a PS/2 SCSI adapter, and their common mechanical design,
the customer has the capability and flexibility to increase storage
capacity in a wide range of PS/2 systems without adding additional
adapters. This commonality also ensures a high degree of hardware
           and software compatibility.
           USER PRODUCTIVITY
The PS/2 80MB and 160MB SCSI Fixed Disk Drives enhance the customer's
ability to store and retrieve data quickly and efficiently, as well
as provide flexibility and expandability to meet the customer's
business objectives. These new SCSI fixed disk drives provide better
performance (17/16ms average access time) and over 30% greater
storage capacity than the PS/2 60MB and 120MB SCSI Fixed Disk Drives.

           SECURITY, AUDITABILITY AND CONTROL
Security and auditability features of the system in which this
           product is installed are:
o A mechanical lock to allow the user to lock the system cover
o A user-invoked password function used to prevent the use of the
               system by unauthorized persons.
LIMITATIONS: SCSI, as defined in the ANSI standard X3.131-1986,
provides for multiple SCSI adapters (initiators) on the SCSI bus.
The SCSI bus may be internal or external to the system unit. The
PS/2 SCSI adapters are in conformance with this standard and have an
           external port.
A data security exposure exists even with Power-On Password
installed, since external SCSI adapters can attach through the
external SCSI port and gain undetected read or write access to data
stored on internal and external SCSI devices.
Physical access to the system and external SCSI devices must
be controlled to limit this exposure.
User management is responsible for evaluation, selection and
implementation of security features, administrative procedures and
appropriate controls in application systems and communications
           facilities.
