TITLE IBM PERSONAL SYSTEM/2 MODEL 55 LS
CORRECTION (CORRECTED ON OCTOBER 10, 1990) Under the Charges section,
the Warranty Option Upgrade Charge (CCR to IOR) has been corrected
           to $40.

ABSTRACT The Model 55 LS enhances the Personal System/2 (R) family of
systems by offering the 32-bit 80386SX microprocessor in a local area
network (LAN) station for Token-Ring or Ethernet networks. The
systems are adapted for connection to a LAN by the inclusion of
           either a 16/4 Token-Ring Network Adapter/A or an Adapter/A for
Ethernet networks. Through the LAN, the system can be connected to
selected PS/2 (R) models, equipped with disk storage, that provide
program and data storage and other services to the LAN. The
Model 55 LS is provided without a diskette drive or fixed disk, but
may be upgraded with the addition of a 1.44MB diskette drive and/or a
30MB or 60MB fixed disk. The Model 55 LS is supported by DOS as a
client to either PC LAN Program or OS/2 (R) LAN Server using Remote
Program Load in a Token-Ring network. Software support in an
Ethernet network is provided by DOS as a client to independent
software vendor LAN operating systems using Remote Program Load.
                  Statement of Direction:
The IBM OS/2 LAN Server currently supports Remote Program Load
of DOS in a Token-Ring network. In addition, IBM intends to enhance
the IBM OS/2 LAN Server to support Remote Program Load of OS/2 in a
Token-Ring network and Remote Program Load of both DOS and OS/2 in an
           Ethernet network.

           DESCRIPTION
           BUSINESS SOLUTIONS
The PS/2 Model 55 LS supports the customer's business objectives by
providing a cost-effective LAN station solution for either Token-Ring
or Ethernet networks. The 16MHz 80386SX microprocessor provides the
32-bit compatibility required by many customers. The Micro Channel
architecture offers fast, efficient, and reliable data flow with a
large selection of optional adapters. The PS/2 Model 55 LS with its
optional features and compatible operating systems and applications
provides a solution for a wide range of applications. It, along with
other systems of the PS/2 family, can provide a total client/server
           system solution.
           SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT
Because the PS/2 Model 55 LS is without media, it provides benefits
in the area of systems management. System security is improved
because data cannot be removed or entered from diskettes at the
workstation. Software and data is stored at the server providing one
central facility for maintenance and backup. Consistent software
program levels and data files may be maintained for all users on the
server. Additional security features, such as passwords and the
ability to select the IPL source, improve control of system usage.
The cover lock and bolt down features help prevent theft of the
           system and options.
           INVESTMENT PROTECTION
The high degree of compatibility of the PS/2 Model 55 LS protects the
investment the customer has made in PS/2 hardware and software. An
extensive list of Micro Channel options is supported. The system may
be upgraded with the addition of a 1.44MB diskette drive or a 30MB or
60MB fixed disk drive. The DOS operating system and compatible
software are supported. (IBM intends to enhance the OS/2 LAN Server
to support Remote Program Load of OS/2.)
           GROWTH ENABLEMENT
The PS/2 Model 55 LS supports application development and growth
through expansion features. The standard 2MB of memory may be
expanded to 8MB on the system board and to 16MB using memory
expansion options. Two available 16-bit Micro Channel slots allow
the addition of options for additional applications. The 1.44MB
diskette option and 30MB or 60MB fixed disk options provide growth if
local DASD is required on the LAN station.
           USER PRODUCTIVITY
The PS/2 Model 55 LS increases user productivity by providing a
32-bit microprocessor for improved computing performance when
compared to 8- and 16-bit microprocessors. The highly reliable
workstation (without media) improves the availability to the user of
the workstation. The system is easily installed because the LAN
adapter, either the 16/4 Token-Ring Adapter or the Ethernet Adapter,
as well as other features such as keyboard port and keyboard,
pointing device port, video graphics array (VGA) port, serial port,
and parallel port, are supplied with the system.

CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES: The PS/2 Model 55 LS is designated as a
customer setup machine. Customers are responsible for providing the
local area network and server required by the PS/2 Model 55 LS. They
are also responsible for creating the reference diskette image on the
server, which is required to setup and test the Model 55 LS.
CABLE ORDERS: Customers are responsible for planning and installing
the cabling required for the local area network connection between
the PS/2 Model 55 LS and the server. Cables are provided for system
power, keyboard, and display connection and cabling instructions are
provided as part of initial setup.
INSTALLABILITY: By following the setup instructions, the user
attaches the keyboard and peripherals. Power is then turned on and
the system attempts a Remote Program Load from the server after it
has successfully completed its initial self-tests.
PROBLEM DETERMINATION: If a failure is found at initial
installation, an instruction will appear on the screen. If the test
is successfully completed, the system attempts to load an operating
system from the server. If the server is unavailable, the system
will continue attempting to load an operating system until powered
off. If the LAN link is unavailable due to the cable being
unplugged, the system will display an error on the screen.
Additional diagnostics must be downloaded from the server to perform
problem determination on optional features installed in the PS/2
           Model 55 LS.
