                    NOVELL TECHNICAL BULLETIN

TITLE: Server Name Length with NetWare for Macintosh
    DOCUMENT ID#: TB.P.297
            DATE: 29 August 1991
         PRODUCT: NetWare for Macintosh
PRODUCT REVISION: v2.2
 CROSS-REFERENCE: N/A

SYMPTOM: Server hanging during VAP load at server boot-up

ISSUE/PROBLEM

When loading the VAPs for NetWare for Macintosh v2.2 at file server
boot-up time, the server hangs with the error message "AFP Gateway:
Bad format in ATFiles.CFG" if the server name is longer than 25
characters.

This is true even though the documentation (see "Installing/
Maintaining the Network") affirms that the maximum server name
length is 45 characters.

This situation does not apply to NetWare for Macintosh v3.0.

SOLUTION

A temporary solution to this situation is to limit the file server
name to 25 characters.

Novell is investigating a permanent solution that will be
implemented in one of the following ways: (1) a direct software
fix, or (2) a change in product specifications that reflects a
permanent 25-character limit under the above conditions. This
product specification change would be outlined in the "Installing/
Maintaining the Network" manual and other pertinent Novell
documentation. If Novell implements a software fix, a follow-up
technical bulletin will be released outlining its usage.
