Unprecedented Backup/Storage Solution for NetWare 386 Users

February 20, 1991 - Micro Design International of Winter Park, Florida,
U.S.A., today announced the addition of the LaserBank Library 5-32
backup/storage system to its line of optical data management products. The
LaserBank Library 5-32 is a 20-Gigabyte, 32 cartridge optical autochanger that
offers NetWare users the capacity needed to backup entire networks with the
reliability of optical media for storing and archiving critical data. Standard
features include two Novell certified rewritable optical drives and award
winning backup software, SCSI Express TM LAN Librarian.

SCSI Express provides a seamless interface between NetWare and the
autochanger that results in completely compatible NetWare volumes. Since the
autochanger resides directly on the file server, no special procedures,
programs, or drivers are required for workstations to access autochanger
volumes. This on-the-server approach eliminates the cost of dedicating a
computer to act as a storage server.

"For the first time in the history of Local Area Networks, there is a
storage system capable of cost-effective random access backup and near-line
storage of vast amounts of data," stated Geoff Legat, president of Micro
Design International.

An integral part of the LaserBank Library 5-32 is LAN Librarian, a
custom version of Cheyenne Software's ARCServe. This data management software
provides the backup and archive functions. Finally, true centralized backup
is possible. With a 20-Gigabyte capacity, the LaserBank Library 5-32 offers
the ability to backup the entire network, including other file servers, in
addition to the local hard disks of workstations.

Backup and archive is easy with LAN Librarian's comprehensive
scheduling system. It greatly simplifies automated, unattended backup. Backup
features include jobs that can automatically repeat at specified intervals,
from a minute to months. Selected files can be backed up using a variety of
options, such as incremental (only changed files) or based on a time the file
was last modified. Both DOS and Macintosh files can be archived while
maintaining all NetWare file attributes, trustee rights, and bindery
information. Unlike tape backup systems, the LaserBank Library 5-32 allows
random access of backup data. In the event of a server disk crash, an optical
volume can provide a fully- functional temporary replacement, reducing down
time from hours (with tape) to minutes (with optical).

In addition, the LaserBank Library 5-32 offers Gigabytes of low cost,
near-line storage for infrequently accessed files and uninterrupted network
performance. Data sets or backup volumes can be dynamically inserted and
removed by the system administrator during server operations. Standard
NetWare utilities and commands are used to prepare media and access the
autochanger. For example, partitions and volumes are created with the NetWare
utility, INSTALL. Volumes can reside on a single cartridge side or span
across multiple cartridges.

The LaserBank Library 5-32 is one in a series of enterprise storage
systems offered by Micro Design. The LaserBank Library 5-10, a ten cartridge
6.5 Gigabyte model is priced at $14,995; the LaserBank Library 5-32 is $39,995.
Both systems include a SCSI interface card, cable and software.
