                                 LET'S GET TECHNICAL

Simple solutions to 35 technical quandries.
     ===========================================

     Installation
     ------------
     1) I installed the LANtastic Enhanced 2Mbps adapter into my existing
network and ran my old batch file. I get a "No LANtastic Hardware
present at this address" message when LANBIOS runs.

Solution: Change your batch file so that it runs LANBIOS2 instead of
LANBIOS. Refer to "Install and Running the LANBIOS2 Software" in your
          LANtastic 2Mbps Adapter User's Manual.

     2) I installed a new LANtastic 2Mbps adapter in an existing network of
original 2Mbps adapters. When I try to log in to an existing server I
get the error "Cannot locate network name."

Solution: Update all the existing nodes with the software diskette
that came with the new adapter. Copy all the software from the
diskette into the \LANTASTI subdirectory on each computer.

     3) I installed the LANtastic AE-2 Ethernet adapter. When I run AE2,
AILANBIO, REDIR or SERVER, the computer locks up and will not accept
keyboard input. This can occur during any one of the programs; or all
the network programs (AE2, AILANBIO, REDIR, and SERVER) install
properly, but I have communications problems or lockups.

Solution: Check that all cables, T-connectors and terminators are
installed properly. Try changing the position of the W8 jumper to the
non-standard bus "B" position. Check that the IRQ setting is not in
conflict with any other hardware in the computer. Make sure the
hardware and the software are configured the same. Also, see if other
programs are loading that may be causing a conflict. Refer to
"Adapter Configuration", "Adapter Installation", and "Software
Installation" in your LANtastic AE-2 Ethernet Adapter User's Manual.

     4) I installed my LANtastic 2Mbps adapter card in a computer with a VGA
graphics adapter. When I run LANBIOS or LANBIOS2, I get the message
"No LANtastic hardware present at this address."

Solution: Some VGA graphics adapters use memory addresses in the same
area s the LANtastic 2Mbps adapter. You must find a block of unused
memory addresses for the LANtastic 2Mbps adapter to use. There are
two ways to do this: 1) Specify a memory address that the VGA
graphics adapter is not using. (refer to the "Installing LANtastic
Starter Kit Hardware" section of your LANtastic 2Mbps Adapter User's
Manual). 2) Reconfigure the VGA graphics adapter to allow the
LANtastic 2Mbps adapter to use its default memory address. (Consult
          your VGA graphics adapter manual).

     5) I installed the LANtastic AE-2 Ethernet adapter and ran AE2, AILANBIO
and LANCHECK. LANCHECK showed a window that said "Initializing,
Please Wait." Then it showed a blank screen with the LANCHECK title
at the top of the screen.

Solution: The IRQ for the LANtastic AE-2 adapter is in conflict with
another device on the computer. Find an unused IRQ. Refer to
"Adapter Configuration" in your LANtastic AE-2 Ethernet Adapter User's
          Manual.

     6) I installed a LANtastic AE-2 Ethernet adapter with an AE-2 Boot ROM.
When I power up my workstation I get the message "Network Boot Error."

Solution: Three situations can cause this:
          1) The Boot server is not powered up and/or the network software is
               not running on the server.
          2) The Boot server does not have Remote Booting enabled in the
Server Startup Parameters option in NET_MGR.
          3) The Boot ROM settings on the LANtastic AE-2 adapter are not
correct. Refer to "Adapter Installation" in your LANtastic AE-2
               Ethernet Adapter User's Manual.

     7) When I access a redirected drive on my server, it takes a long time.
If I try the same operation locally at the server it takes the normal
amount of time. I have the LANtastic AE-2 adapter in my server. I
have one of my drives redirected through the network locally on the
          server.

Solution: Make sure you have your cable, T-connectors, and terminators
properly installed. Also, be sure the card and the software switches
are configured the same. Refer to "Adapter Installation" and
"Software Installation" in your LANtastic AE-2 Ethernet Adapter User's
          Manual.

     8) I needed to make a copy of my LANtastic network disks to use in a 3.5
floppy drive. I put both of my 5.25 inch floppies onto one 3.5 inch
diskette. When I ran INSTALL from the 3.5 inch floppy, INSTALL gave a
message instructing me to insert disk one and would not allow me to
          continue the installation process.

Solution: Use the DOS XCOPY command to copy the software to the 3.5
inch floppy. It will copy the 0 byte files that the INSTALL program
uses to keep track of which diskette is in the drive.

     9) I expanded a 2Mbps network. I used Artisoft cable in the first part
of the network and a cable my supplier said was the same thing in
another part of the network. When I run LANCHECK, I get inconsistent
results and the network does not work properly. Some nodes
communicate with each other; some nodes don't.

Solution: Do no mix cable types. Artisoft only supports LANtastic
2Mbps cable, Belden cable part number 9729, Belden cable part number
89729, and AT&T grade phone cable. You must replace the mixed cable
before Artisoft can support the installation.

     10) I am adding a third node to my LANtastic network. I can't log in to
more than two computers, no matter what I do. I have changed my
Server Startup Parameters, my LOGINS= switch on the REDIR command line
and changed my concurrent log-ins on all the servers. I am using
LANtastic NOS version 2.53s or 2.57s.

Solution: The LANtastic NOS you are using only allows two users.
Upgrade to the latest version of LANtastic NOS.

     11) My XT, AT or 386 locks after I run the REDIR program.

Solution: If your computer worked with version 2.xx of LANtastic NOS,
contact Artisoft Technical Support and order a software patch that
          will correct your problem.

     12) I get "Sever connection to node ????? broken" and "bleeping" when I
use the network. The network software is loading correctly.

Solution: Be sure the cable you are using is supported by LANtastic.
RG58A/U and RG58C/U for cheapernet on the AE-2. LANtastic 2Mbps
cable, Belden cable part number 9729, Belden cable part number 89729,

and AT&T grade phone cable for the LANtastic 2Mbps network. Also make
sure you have not exceeded the recommended network segment length.

     13) I get a "No LANtastic Hardware Present at this address error." I have
extended memory on my computer and am using an expanded memory
          manager.

Solution: If you are using the LANtastic 2Mbps adapter or the
LANtastic NE3 Ethernet adapter, you need to make sure that the memory
manager is excluding the memory address used by the network adapter.

     14) I installed an Enhanced 2Mbps adapter in an 8 bit slot (or) XT style
machine. I get a "Timeout waiting for interrupt from coprocessor"
message. I am trying to use IRQ 10 or 15.

     15) I have a diskless workstation. I have set up the boot server, enabled
remote booting and installed the proper boot ROM in my workstation. I
get a "Non System Disk" message when I power up the workstation.

Solution: Make the boot image from a diskette which is set up as a
system (bootable) disk. Refer to "Remote Booting" in the LANtastic
          Network Operating System Reference Manual.

     Login / Logout / Redirection
     ----------------------------
     16) When I try to start up my diskless workstation, I get a "Too many
redirections or logins to network node ???????" message.

Solution: On your boot server, set your maximum users in the Server
Startup Parameters equal to the number of diskless workstations times
2, plus enough additional logins for the remainder of the network
nodes. For example, if you have an eight node network with 6 diskless
workstations and 2 server/workstations, you would set a maximum
logins=14 on the boot server, 6 times 2 logins for the diskless
workstations and 1 login for each server. Refer to "Server Startup
Parameters" of your LANtastic Network Operating System Reference
          Manual.

     17) I can't log in to more than two servers, any two servers. I get the
error message "Too many redirections or logins to network node ?????."

Solution: Your workstation may have exceeded its log-ins limit. The
REDIR program has a default limit of two log-ins. This means you will
only be allowed to log in to two servers at one time. Increase your
number of log-ins by adding the LOGINS= switch to your REDIR command
line. Refer to "Command Line Switches" in your LANtastic Network
          Operating System Reference Manual.

     18) I can't log-in to one server more than a specific number of times.

Solution: You may have exceeded the number of concurrent log-ins that
your user-name / password is configured for, especially if your user-
name / password is used from several workstations. Another
possibility is that you may need to change the Maximum Users on the
Server Startup Parameters to allow more users to log in to the server
at one time. Also, you can delete and re-enter your account in
NET_MGR. Refer to "Accounts" and "Server Startup Parameters" in your
LANtastic Network Operating System Reference Manual.

     19) I get a "Can't Locate Network Name" error when I run my STARTNET.BAT
file. I can see the servers and log in through the NET program.

Solution: Edit your STARTNET.BAT file and make sure the server names
you are trying to log in to are spelled correctly.

     Printing
     --------
     20) I am using the LANtastic NOS version 3.0 on a server and when I try to
          use the printer, nothing prints.

Solution: If you are going to share your printer with other
workstations on the network, you need to log in to your own server and
redirect your printer output through the network to your printer
resource. If you do not intend to share your printer with the rest of
the network, halt the printer queue output to the printer port. Type:
NET QUEUE HALT \\SERVER-NAME [LPTn COMn] where LPTn or COMn are the
printer port your printer is attached to and Server-name is the name
of your server. To issue this command you will need the Q privilege
enabled for your user-name. You also need to delete any printer
redirection on the printer port your printer is attached to. Refer to
"NET Line Commands and Accounts" in your LANtastic Network Operating
          System Reference Manual.

     21) My application will not printer until I exit the program.

Solution: Set a timeout value for network printing. Issue the
command: NET LPT TIMEOUT n where n equals the number of seconds
REDIR.EXE will wait before closing the print job. Set this to a value
that is greater than 0. When the applications stops sending data to
the printer, the REDIR program will wait the number of seconds set on
the NET LPT TIMEOUT command line and then close the print file. This
allows the file to be released from the server's print spooler to the
printer. Refer to "NET Line Commands" in your LANtastic Network
          Operating System Reference Manual.

     22) When I log in to the print server, redirect the printer port and send
something to be printer, nothing comes out. The redirection is listed
when I issue a NET SHOW command.

Solution: Version 2.57 of LANtastic NOS defaults to having the print
spooler disabled to allow local printing. Version 3.00 defaults to
having the print spooler enabled to allow sharing o the printer on the
network. You need to enabled despooling by one of the following
          methods:
Type: NET QUEUE START \\SERVER-NAME, where Server-Name is the name of
your print server. You must have the Q privilege enabled on your
          user-name to issue this command.
          - Set despooling to "enabled" in the Server Startup Parameters and
          reboot the server.
          - Make sure your printer resource in the NET_MGR program is set to the
proper printer port. If you have LANtastic 3.0 and are using a serial
printer, make sure the communications parameters are set properly.
Refer to "Accounts", "Network Printing" and "Server Startup
Parameters" in your LANtastic Network Operating System Reference
          Manual.

     23) I tried to delete a print job from the print queue. It shows deleted
in the status column but it stays on the list.

Solution: You must first halt the print queue and then delete the
print jobs. Restart the Queue after you are finished. Refer to
"Network Printing" in your LANtastic Network Operating System
          Reference Manual.

     24) My laser printer takes a very long time to print from an application,
especially Microsoft Windows. It prints fine when not in an
          application.

Solution: If your version of LANtastic NOS is 2.57 or greater, you can
increase the Characters per Second for your printer resource. The
maximum rate allowed is 32,767 characters per second. Refer to

"Network Printing" in your LANtastic Network Operating System
          Reference Manual.

     25) I have banner pages enabled, but all I get when I print is a blank
page. I have version 2.5x of LANtastic NOS.

Solution: The Banner page prints to the width specified in Page Width.
You must set the page to the appropriate width, from the default value
          of 0.

     26) My application program uses LPT1 and I have redirected my printer
through the network. Now I get messages like "Error writing to device
LPT1: Abort, Retry, Fail" when I try to print.

Solution: Set up your application to print to a network printer. If
your application does not support this you should try to print to a
file called LPT1. Refer to your application's manual or contact the
software company for more information on using the application with
          network printers.

     Software Compatibility
     ----------------------
     27) I am trying to use Sidekick and other programs that access the serial
ports. When using LANtastic NOS 3.0, I get an error as these programs
load or when they try to access the serial ports.

Solution: Type the command: NET QUEUE HALT \\SERVER-NAME [COMn] where
Server-Name is the name of your server and COMn is the serial port you
wish to use. This command will suspend the SERVER program's control
of the COM port. You need to have the Q privilege enabled in your
user account to issue this command. Refer to "NET Line Commands" and
"Accounts" in your LANtastic Network Operating System Reference
          Manual.

     28) I keep getting the message "Internal stack failure, System halted."

Solution: You probably have DOS 3.2 installed on your computer.
Install DOS 3.1, 3.3 or greater.

     29) I am unable to backup the LANTASTI.NET subdirectory with my tape
          backup system.

Solution: You should not attempt to backup an active server's
LANTASTI.NET subdirectory. Refer to "Control Directory Maintenance"
in your LANtastic Network Operating System Reference Manual.

     30) When more than one workstation tries to access the same program or
file on the same server, the next workstation gets a "Sharing
          violation" or "Access denied" message.

Solution: Try changing any .EXE, .OVL or other program files to "read-
only". This can be done using the DOS ATTRIB command. Also raise the
number of SHARE Locks and the size of the SHARE File space. Refer to
          your DOS Manual.

     31) I want to use my modem on my computer, which is a server. After the
network software loads, my communications software will not work
properly and I cannot use my modem.

Solution: Issue the command: NET QUEUE HALT \\SERVER-NAME [COMn]
where Server-Name is the name of your server and COMn is the serial
port you wish to use. This command will suspend the Server program's
control of the COM ports. You need to have the Q privilege enabled on
your username to issue this command. Refer to "NET Line Commands" and
"Accounts" in your LANtastic Network Operating System Reference

          Manual.

     Miscellaneous
     -------------
     32) I forgot my password for my NET_MGR program.

Solution: Have your Network Administrator re-install your network
software and reconfigure your server. Refer to "Network Security" in
your LANtastic Network Operating System Reference Manual and "Software
Installation" in your LANtastic Network Operating System User's
          Manual.

     33) I get the same directory listing from my floppy drive even after the
          diskette had been changed.

Solution: If you are using version 2.53 of LANtastic NOS, you need to
upgrade to a newer version. If you are using version 2.57 of
LANtastic NOS, make sure that you do not have the Peer privilege
enabled for your user account. Refer to "Installation and the NET_MGR
          Program" section of your manual.

     34) We use "USER" as a common user-name on our network. When we look at
our mail, all the entries appear in the outgoing list.

Solution: The network software keeps track of outgoing and incoming
mail by user-name. You need to give each user on the network his or
her own user-name to effectively use the Electronic Mail System.
Refer to the "Mail" section of your LANtastic Network Operating System
          Reference Manual.

     35) My Num-Lock or Caps-Lock keys comes on without warning. I get numbers
off the cursor pad and shifted letters off the keyboard.

Solution: Contact Artisoft Technical Support to order a software patch
          that will correct the problem.
