 Rhetoric

 Long forgotten, much maligned
 the rhetoric of another time
once full of passion, so full of rage
now sits silently on a dusty page
My mind ablaze with cries of war
 billowing waves on empty shores
 echo solemnly throughout the night
a distant memory, a vivid sight
 Smoking timbers and charred remains
Damn the fates and their bitter skeins
in a single moment, all that mattered
my life, my home, my world was shattered
 A cry of anguish, bittersweet
How dare you leave and not take me?
Amid the pieces of my soul
a shred of longing to be whole
a lingering desire, a gentle nudge
simple laughter and words of love
In my dreams, I touch the face
that now lies silently in a humble grave
