 AB    It has been said that fear of becoming infected with the human
       immunodeficiency virus is limiting the quality of care nurses provide.
       Concern for personal safety has increased with the appearance of
       acquired immunodeficiency syndrome as well as outbreaks of some other
       diseases that were thought to be well controlled. This article provides
       an overview of these diseases and the requirements for prevention.
