CONNECT! Magazine EDITORIAL

  First, a warning.
Word has been received that someone is logging on to local BBS systems
using the name David Wachenschwanz. You've got to admire anyone, even a fraud,
with that much ambition to use that particular moniker. If I didn't already
have that name stored in my macro-keys I'd use something simpler like Ed
Wachenschwanz. Old joke.
If someone does log on to your system using my name, it can easily be
confirmed if it is in fact the real McCoy (or real Wachenschwanz) by calling
713-530-2709. That's Connect! Communication's voice line, and I would
recommend that any SysOp with the slightest doubt about the authenticity of
such a call to check it out for yourself.
As a general rule, I always log on to a BBS as David Wachenschwanz and
not "Dave." Please do NOT give me SysOp access to your system, even if it is
really *me* calling...I have no need for that much access to confirm the
existence of your system. It's a kind gesture on the SysOp's part, but a
dangerous way to do business.
  Shifting gears...

  Closure.
It can be as simple as a period at the end of sentence, a barricade at
the end of a dead-end road. A door that's not open, or the device that keeps
it that way.

Closure can also take on a personal meaning in the sense of not being
fulfilled in some respect. This past week I realized that one pathway of my
life would not enjoy closure.
When the body of our 37th President of the United States was laid to rest
this past week, any chance of conveying to him my admiration and respect was
gone.
I don't know how many times over the past 20 years I had started to jot
down a few lines to Richard Milhous Nixon. A man I respected as much as my own
father, and one to this day I think got the rotten end of a deal by the ever so
liberal media that tainted his image as a war-monger and fascist.
The only thing Richard Nixon ever did that was wrong was to be caught in
a cesspool of political dirty tricks that continue to this day with our curr-
ent president.
Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George Bush, and Bill Clinton:
if any of you are without political sin, bend over and I will personally kiss
your collective asses.
There is not a one of us able to point a guilty finger at Richard Nixon
as none of us are without sin. You say YOU ARE? Yeah, in your dreams.
Richard Nixon was the finest president, at least in my lifetime, that this
country has ever had. Of course I liked Harry Truman too, but that is beside
the point and ole Harry was a bit before my time.
If one carefully reviews the accomplishments of the Nixon administration,
not only in foreign policy but domestic as well, you soon will realize Richard
Nixon was no ordinary man.
He was a self-made man. He didn't have unlimited funds to fuel his attempts
at political office like the Kennedy's did. He came from a modest family that
emphasized that if one works hard, one will succeed.
Right now, I don't know of any one person who deserves more respect than one
who can pull himself out of the mud and make something out of his life. This
was Richard Nixon's greatest trait: never give up. To him it was better to
lose all than never try. And he lost a lot.
Richard Nixon loved America. He loved his family as much as you and I love
ours. He was the butt of many jokes and impressionists...hell even I did a
fairly good Nixon impression. When a lot of us would give up and give in,
Nixon would come back and try again and again. Up until the end, he was giving
advice to current presidents. China loved him. Russia did too. Too bad that
his own country waited until his death to show any affection for him.
Perfect? No, Richard Nixon most certainly wasn't perfect. When you have to
recruit presidents from the human race, you'll never get a perfect one. From
George Washington to Bill Clinton, mistakes were made and mistakes will be
made in the future.
Finally, the words of Rev. Billy Graham who was a long-life friend and
advisor of Richard Nixon echo in my mind that he spoke so wonderfully at the
Nixon funeral: "There is a time to be born, a time to live and a time to die.
Let us not fool ourselves that we can cheat death, for the time for us to die
could come at any time...each and every one of us."
Call me a Nixon supporter? Damned right. I only wish I had been a better
one and had told Richard Nixon just how I felt. That is my loss and the
reason this aspect of my life will never enjoy closure.

eSoft's TBBS gives you TRUE FREEDOM.
You didn't bargain for the pile of hardware your multi-user BBS has
made for you. What started out as a dream about the service your system
would provide, the solutions to problems you would find, and the money you
would make has turned into a hardware jungle that now controls your life.
As you compared the PRICES of software you MISSED the fact that the
design philosophy of most BBS software forces many hardware decisions on
 you.
ONLY TBBS allows you to achieve high performance with 64 high speed
lines on a SINGLE CPU with NO custom hardware. And only TBBS gives you
the option of integrated xBASE databasing with the TDBS expansion module
 and compiler.
Talk to any TBBS system operator. They'll talk first about ideas, not
hardware and software. For over ten years TBBS has provided them the
freedom to design custom systems they can live with.
And by purchasing your eSoft products from CONNECT! COMMUNICATIONS, you

THE MAN BEHIND ANYTHING GOES BBS

As you know, Connect! On-Line Magazine started up again last month, bringing
back the ever popular Sysop Spotlight features. As much as I enjoy that
column I left a suggestion to David Wachenschwanz on Atomic Cafe, that I
thought it would be nice to also spotlight "special" users.
We all have at least one of these users on our board. David passed my
suggestion on to Chuck Wharton. Well as you've probably guessed by now, the
old adage about he who suggests usually winds up with the job..........proved
true once again.
This column is to give recognition to those users who are fighting back
against their handicaps instead of saying, "I can't do that".
This month's column is devoted to Blair Schwanewede, who happens to be both
a BBS user and a fairly new sysop.
A little over 10 years ago, on January 23, 1984, on snow and ice laden roads
in Mahwah, New Jersey, Blair Schwanewede, then 17 years old, was following his
girlfriend and her girlfriend home from an evening out.
Due to the adverse weather conditions they weren't going but about 25-30 mph
up a hill in town.
Without any warning Blair's 1975 Chevy Impala began sliding out of control.
He remembers that at one point he thought he was going to slide into the car
ahead and the thought came into his head that if he messed up the girl's car
his Dad was "gonna kill him".
Blair didn't hit the car ahead, instead the slide turned his car around
sideways and jumped the curb winding up facing back down the hill where he hit
a telephone pole with the front end of his car.
He apparently was thrown forward and to the right; his chest hit the dash,
the windshield was broken by the force of the right-hand side of his head
hitting it, then he was thrown against the window on the passenger's side of
the car also breaking that window.
It's hard to know for sure which blow broke his neck. But thinking back,
Blair thinks it was when he hit the windshield -- he remembers his head
snapping backward. Seconds later he was on the floor, his shoulders against the
passenger door, his butt was in the passenger-seat wheel well, his legs and
feet over the hump in the middle of the car on the drivers side, glass in
his forehead, unable to move; unbelievably he never lost consciousness.

NINA: Blair, going back to the accident for a minute -- you said you were
never unconscious during or just after the accident. Did you know at the time
that you were paralyzed?

BLAIR: Yes, because I tried to get up and I couldn't move and I had blood
dripping in my mouth from my forehead and I couldn't wipe my face.

NINA: What were the feelings that were running through your head at that
time when you realized that you couldn't move?

BLAIR: Well you know.........I'm not gonna be able to walk, what's the
matter? I knew it broke my neck, I knew it did that. The accident happened
right by the school nurse's house and her son, John came out and held my head
still until the ambulance got there so I wouldn't cut my spinal cord or
anything. John and the others kept me calm.

NINA: When your damage was accessed, were you totally paralyzed at that
time?

BLAIR: When I wound up on the floor all that I could move was my head but
later on that night when I was in the emergency room and they were picking the
glass out of my face I was able to begin moving my arms slightly. My spinal
cord was not cut. Then when I came out here to be evaluated for the
experimental omentum surgery and they did MRI's then they saw the front of my
neck was fallen (a normal spinal cord is 18 or 19 millimeters, Blair's was
five) because the neck bones had never been fixed correctly to allow the spinal
cord room to be open. So all those years I was doing therapy nothing was
coming back because the neck was all squashed.

[EDITOR'S NOTE: Omentum is a free fold of the peritoneum, or transparent
membrane lining the abdominal cavity, which connects the stomach and other
  visceral organs.]

NINA: You were telling me that you underwent an experimental surgery in
April of 1993, is that the omentum surgery you referred to?

BLAIR: Yes, the omentum surgery at Boston University Hospital in Boston.

NINA: Now, I know that ABC's "20/20" recently did a program on some of you
who underwent this surgery in Boston and then came to Texas to undergo a
special therapy program and that show is supposed to air sometime next month,
so we won't go into a whole lot of detail about the surgery but can you tell
me a little bit about it?

BLAIR: Sure. You see, your stomach has a lining that has nerve fibers and
blood and [the doctors] attach it to your spinal cord and it puts the blood
circulation back there and it gets the atrophy out of your spinal cord. And
then it starts helping people.

NINA: What improvement have you seen since the surgery last year?

BLAIR: Quite a bit. I used to just be freezing all the time. Now my
circulation is back and my body temperature is normal again. I get goose
bumps, I sweat, and slight movement in my legs. A couple months ago I got my
little pinky on my right hand to move but [that] comes and goes.

NINA: And you are also doing extensive therapy to go along with the surgery
that was done. Is that to help get rid of the atrophy?

BLAIR: No, the 'momentum' is doing that, but what I have to do is retrain
my brain to use the existing tracks in the spinal cord.

NINA: How many hours a day do you spend on therapy?

BLAIR: About two at home and approximately three hours at the therapy
center.

NINA: So between therapy, modeming and running your BBS, you pretty well
have your days tied up, don't you?

BLAIR: Days and nights. As you know, when you run a BBS there's always
something to be setup, fixed or deleted. Since I started the board, I have
found I have very little time left to call other boards.

NINA: Let's back up a minute, when did you first get into modeming as a
hobby?

BLAIR: Oh, let me think......it was in 1992 and I was really into the police
scanners and started calling around for files.

NINA: So what made you decide to begin your own BBS?

BLAIR: One of the first boards I called was a Wildcat! board and I thought,
'This is pretty neat.' So while I was in Florida living with my Mom I decided
to purchase the Wildcat program. Then, after I had moved to Texas I got a
notice from Wildcat! about an upgrade and I decided it was time to get started,
so I started fooling around with it, putting my name in it and setting up areas
and calling local boards for files; but it was close to a year before I
actually put the board up for callers.

NINA: When did your board, ANYTHING GOES BBS, take it's first caller and
how many calls since then?

BLAIR: The first call came in on December 1, 1993. As of now, there have
been 11,415 calls and there are 871 users in the database.

NINA: Very impressive! I know first hand how much time and work goes into
setting up and maintaining a BBS for someone who isn't physically handicapped.
Each time I have seen you working on your board in your apartment I have come
away in awe that you have done 99% percent of it by yourself in spite of the
fact that when you are laying in bed and working on the board you can only use
two knuckles on one hand to type. I'm not sure I could have had the persever-
ance to accomplish all that you have with ANYTHING GOES. What do you consider
the hardest or most frustrating part of setting the board up?

BLAIR: Setting up Romdoor and typing in 57 conference areas before I
discovered `pre-mades'! Now, if there's not a pre-made of a CD that I
purchase then that CD doesn't go on-line until a pre-made comes into my hands.
The other frustration is that I can't work on the hardware. I have to hire
people to install tape drives, motherboards, etc. or try to give instructions
to my nurses on how to do something. I also have to have my nurses write down
things for me, like phone numbers, etc.

NINA: But in talking with you on the phone or when I've been around you I
have never seen or heard you get frustrated or down. Are you always in an up,
optimistic mood?

BLAIR: Oh, sure I get moody once in a while but I try not to. I got over the
self-pity years ago. I found out that people don't want to be around `woe is
me' types. Shoot, I don't either. If someone is always whining and complain-
ing, I'm outta there!

ANYTHING GOES has both free and subscriber areas. The free areas give 200k
download a day, no file ratios, and access to some, but not all of the CD's
(right now the CD's aren't available because of a problem with the Pioneer
6-pack but that should be taken care of shortly). Subscription is $20 a year
and gives more daily time, full access (for access to the adult areas, written
proof of age must be given) and access to the Internet. Blair is presently
running two nodes and working on getting a third line set up. Both nodes are
running 28,800 Hayes modems.
You can reach Blair at ANYTHING GOES, Node 1, (713) 661-7833; Node 2, 661-

CONNECT! Magazine CRITICAL MASS

LOS ALAMOS RESEARCHERS PROVIDE NEW INFORMATION
ON OCEAN CRUST FORMATION AT MID-OCEAN RIDGES

                            By Kathy Higgins, LANL-PIO

Los Alamos researchers are providing accurate dates on past volcanic act-
ivity along mid-ocean ridges for the first time, demonstrating that the under-
lying magma plumbing systems are much more complex than originally believed.
Using refined dating techniques to study mid-ocean ridges in the eastern
Pacific, Los Alamos researchers have shown that volcanic activity is occurring
along an area more than 30 times wider than previously thought. Scientists
originally thought the volcanism occurred along a narrow, symmetrical ridge
only a few hundred meters wide.
The mid-ocean ridges offer the best access to Earth's inner workings. As
the ocean floor pulls apart, magma from Earth's upper mantle erupts to quickly
fill the gap, producing new ocean crust capped by basalt.

Los Alamos scientists Steve Goldstein and Mike Murrell in the Laboratory's
Chemical Science and Technology Division, in collaboration with researchers
from the University of Florida, University of Hawaii and the Lamont Doherty
Earth Observatory, found that lava erupted within a region of two to four kilo-
meters on either side of such ridges.
Goldstein, Murrell and fellow researchers recently published their findings
in NATURE magazine.
They studied the mid-ocean ridge where the Juan De Fuca and Gorda plates
separate off the coasts of Oregon and Washington and the East Pacific Rise, a
ridge where the Cocos and Pacific plates separate off the coast of Mexico.
"New ocean crust is being created at these ocean ridges and we now can
provide accurate information about how this takes place," Murrell said.
The Earth's relatively brittle outer shell is made up of 12 to 15 rigid
plates that move independently, continually separating, colliding or sliding
past one another. Scientists know that certain ocean plates are separating,
but have never had an accurate way to know when, where and how often volcanic
eruptions occurred. Although the distribution of geologic structures and rocks
with respect to plate boundaries is fairly well understood, the underlying
driving force responsible for the motion of the plates remains unclear.
Scientists believe that the Earth's mantle is very dynamic. Thermal energy
travels along huge convection currents carrying hot regions upward and cold
regions downward. These processes ultimately cause many broad geologic phen-
omena including mountain building, volcanism and continental movements.
Using thermal ionization mass spectrometry to measure long-lived members of
the uranium decay series, Goldstein and Murrell analyzed and dated basalt
collected from the ocean floor ridges. For these types of measurements, mass
spectrometry is 10 to 100 times more sensitive and can measure smaller samples
with better precision than earlier techniques such as radioactive decay meth-
ods. Mass spectrometry measures isotopes by mass, actually detecting the
amounts of particular atoms and not their decays.
In a clean room, scientists dissolve the basalt samples and use chemical
separations to get pure extractions of specific elements. The extracts are
deposited on thin metal filaments, inserted in the mass spectrometer, and then
ionized by heating the filament.
"We used to have to count isotope decays by putting the sample in a counter
for a matter of days, weeks or months, depending on the amount of material,"
Murrell explained. "Now we can use the mass spectrometer for an hour of two
to measure isotope abundance."
Goldstein and Murrell measured the atomic masses of uranium atoms and the
daughter isotope, protactinium, which has seldom before been used for age
studies, decays at a different rate than uranium. Because the researchers can
assume what the starting ratio was at the time of eruption, the ocean basalt
sample can be accurately dated based on the existing ratio of daughter to
parent.
By providing precise dates of eruptions, researchers can develop formation
rates of the ocean crust, locate where the magma erupts and determine how fast
the ocean ridges are separating. The research provides insight into basic
principals of tectonics and volcanic systems and has major implications on
theories about ocean crust formation, according to Murrell.
The East Pacific Rise off the coast of Mexico has been described as Earth's
simplest volcanic system. But the Los Alamos team's research indicates it is
much more complex.
"Instead of having a single magma chamber with basically a pipe reaching the
surface, we're seeing a much more complicated plumbing system with maybe
several different magma chambers," according to Murrell. "The region of
activity is much wider than previously believed."
Associated with volcanic activity along the mid-ocean ridges are calderas,
large depressions formed by the explosion or collapse of an old volcano. The
ridge off the coast of Mexico has a well-defined caldera. The Los Alamos data
indicates that the eruptions outside the caldera are fed by crustal plumbing
systems that are different than those that supplied the caldera.
The Juan de Fuca ridge caldera is not nearly so well-defined, but researchers
found similar information, implicating different magma sources, in this case
as well.
The research is supported by a grant from the Geoscience Research Program,
Office of Basic Energy Sciences in the Department of Energy.

                     TESTS CONFIRM COATING DURABILITY

                        By Kathy Higgins, LANL-PIO

SAN DIEGO, CALIF.-- Any car owner from back East knows the salt used to
melt snow on the roads soon rusts through the car's metal, if the automobile
is not undercoated.
A new corrosion-resistant polymer being tested by a Los Alamos National
Laboratory chemist could prevent metals from rusting in similar harsh environ-
ments.
Laboratory chemist Debra Wrobleski in the Polymers and Coatings Group,
presented a paper on her findings recently at the American Chemical Society
meeting.
Conducting polymers stop corrosion by acting as an electronic barrier, pre-
venting the transfer of electrons that results in oxidation of a metal.
Wrobleski developed a workable mixture containing the conducting polymer
polyaniline and a solution stabilizer in a solvent. Conducting polymer
solutions have been widely held as unmanageable, turning to a gelatin-like
material soon after mixing.
Wrobleski is conducting the research in collaboration with researcher Karen
Thompson of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to develop a
protective coating for the steel launch pads used during space shuttle launch-
ings. Due to acidic exhaust fumes generated at shuttle launches, NASA must
perform extensive and frequent maintenance to clean corroded areas and re-
apply corrosion control coatings to the launch pads and related equipment.
Test results indicated the polyaniline was an effective corrosion resistant
primer, performing much better than the control samples wit epoxy or poly-
urethane alone.
In her research experiments, Wrobleski sprayed on polyaniline coatings up to
two thousands of an inch thick, cured them, and then over-coated the steel
samples with either polyurethane or epoxy. On comparison samples, she used
only the common polyurethane or epoxy topcoat. The polyurethane is the same
coating Kennedy Space Center currently uses as a topcoat over a zinc-epoxy
primer for the launch pads and related equipment. The epoxy topcoat was used
because it is resistant to acid.
Wrobleski tested 12 postcard-sized steel samples coated with both poly-
aniline and polyurethane along with two samples coated only with polyurethane.
These samples were exposed to sun, wind, and ocean salt spray, only one mile
away from the space shuttle launch site at the Kennedy Space Center Corrosion
Test Site.
After seven months of exposure, there were noticeable differences according
to the researcher. Test samples coated with the polyaniline primer appeared
unchanged by the severe exposures, while the polyurethane samples showed
extensive signs of corrosion and rust.
In a Laboratory test, Wrobleski immersed postage stamp sized steel samples
in separate solutions of salt water or water containing hydrochloric acid for
8 to 12 weeks. The tests included bubbling air through the solutions to
promote oxidation in the liquids.
The samples coated with the polyaniline primer and the epoxy topcoat demon-
strated much better corrosion resistance than the samples coated with epoxy
alone. When the coating was scratched to expose bare metal, there was virt-
ually no sign of oxidation in the scratched area, according to Wrobleski. The
samples coated with only epoxy showed extensive signs of early rust and
corrosion.
Additional applications for the coatings include ocean drilling platforms,
automobiles, road and general construction such as rebar used in most highways
and buildings.

INDUSTRY SEEKS LOS ALAMOS LABORATORY HELP TO MEET TOUGHER STANDARDS

                        By Kathy Higgins, LANL-PIO

Dilution is no longer a solution for air pollution.
Facing more stringent environmental standards for stack emissions, industry
is searching for new ways to clean up industrial flue gases rather than con-
ventional methods of dilution, absorption or incineration, which not only are
expensive to install and operate but do not completely remove hazardous poll-
utants.
The Electric Power Research Institute, the research arm for U.S. electric
utilities, recently signed a cooperative research and development agreement
with Los Alamos National Laboratory to design a more economical and efficient
air-pollution-control system for industry.
In the laboratory, a team led by Louis Rosocha, from Los Alamos' Advanced
Laser and Systems Technology Group, has successfully demonstrated the use of
silent discharge plasma to chemically break-down hazardous organic compounds
such as machining oils, solvents and volatile gases into less hazardous sub-
stances.
Similar to electrons exciting and lighting a fluorescent light bulb when an
electric current runs through it, the silent discharge plasma technology uses
an electrically powered cell to generate the plasma or ionized gas. The ex-
cited electrons form highly reactive molecules called "free radicals." Free
radicals themselves are not charged but possess an unpaired electron, allowing
them to bind with and break apart other molecules.
Rosocha likens the chemcial breakdown process to cold combustion: incinera-
tion without the heat. Conventional incineration requires high temperatures
to oxidize the material, and sometimes generates undesirable by-products.
In the silent discharge plasma, energized electrons create free radicals at
low temperatures and attach themselves to organic compounds in gases and ox-
idize them into less harmful components like water, carbon dioxide and acid.
The acid is later neutralized and disposed of.
EPRI and Los Alamos will develop and field a plasma system that can be
placed within an industrial-type flue to break down the complex, hazardous
organic compounds that come from industries like dry cleaners, paper mills and
plastic production facilities.
Rosocha says this technology could provide American industries a cost-
effective method to meet increasingly stringent environmental air pollution
regulations.
The Clean Air Act fo 1970 established air-quality standards not to exceed
specified low concentrations for six major pollutants: particulates, sulfur
oxides, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, hydrocarbons and photochemicals.
Under the federal mandate, each state was required to develop plans to im-
plement and maintain these standards.
In 1990, amendments to the act imposed stricter air-quality standards on
urban areas and tightened industrial pollution-control requirements.

For the latest news in computer technology, read Dwight Silverman's column
in the business section every Sunday in The Houston Chronicle, Houston's

CALLING A BBS AND YOU CAN'T GET AN ANSWER? Many System Operators will take
their BBS down during thunderstorm activity. We encourage SysOps to take
their phone line "off hook" to busy the line out during these periods of non-
service. Some do, some don't. If you can't get through, try again later.

If you are the SysOp of a BBS and wish to have your system listed in
Houston's largest and most accurate BBS list, call THE ATOMIC CAFE BBS at 713-
530-8875. Log on under your real name, and answer the registration informat-
ion. Then, from the top level menu, select <H>. You will then be at the
Houston Area 713 BBS List (c) Center. Select <4> to add a system or to change
your system. Select <5> to remove your system from the list. In either case,
you will be asked to answer a questionnaire for EACH line you wish to list.
The service is FREE. We reserve the right to refuse to list any system that
we feel may be inappropriate to list.
Sorry, NO VOICE CALLS concerning your listing.

Here are a few other things to keep in mind ...

*FidoNet BBS systems dedicate one hour a day to mail exchange. That hour is
normally from 4-5 a.m. central time, or 3-4 a.m. central daylight time. Most
FidoNet nodes will not accept a call from a human user during that time, but
does allow other computers on the network to connect to exchange mail.

*Numbers that ring constantly over a period of a few days are removed from the
list due to the fact that the system may have been de-commissioned and that
number may now be a voice line. We cannot take a chance on that.

*If you encounter a human voice on a line listed herein as a BBS, please let
us know. Send the number and the name of the system to: Houston Area 713 BBS
List (c), P. O. Box 720894, Houston Texas 77072. Or send Internet email to
d.wachenschwanz@atomiccafe.com; FidoNet email to David Wachenschwanz @ FidoNet
node 1:106/235; or call 713-530-8875, The Atomic Cafe BBS and register as a
new user.

*There is no charge for accessing The Atomic Cafe to do this. We do very much
appreciate your assistance in keeping the Houston Area 713 BBS List (c) up to
date and as accurate as possible.
*Houston is a VERY VOLATILE BBS market. Systems up one day may be down for
good on the next. For every system to goes down, there are usually 2 or 3 to
replace it. Therefore, it is vital that you always do your BBS dialing from a
RECENT list.

HOWL!!................862-1415 d Spitfire DOS Life! Files! Words! Soul!

That's how the Sysops post it in the Houston BBS listing from Atomic Cafe.

But that listing alone didn't get me to call. I remembered picking up a
collection of works by Beat poet Allen Ginsburg. The collection had the same
name -- Howl. I figured I'd dial this BBS and see if it featured a
collection of bizarre poetry, or bizarre and entertaining behavior.

Eureka! I found bizarre, original literature, bizarre behavior and even
bizarre menus! But before the menus, you get a couple quick shots of poetry
from Charles Bukowski on your screen, including this one entitled
"Beans With Garlic":

 this is important enough:
 to get your feelings down,
 it is better than shaving
 or cooking beans with garlic.
it is the little we can do
 this small bravery of knowledge
 and there is of course
 madness and terror too
in knowing that some part of you ... one love dead, one love departed
wound up like a clock another love . . .
can never be wound again ah! as many loves as beans
once it stops. yes, count them now
but now there's a ticking sad, sad
under your shirt and you whirl your feelings boiling over flame,
the beans with a spoon, ... get this down.

 Soon comes the main menu:

Those of us not in the group assembled for this enterprise by the Sysops --
SysGod Stretch and CoSys Xann -- must take a little time exploring the
menu choices and their meanings inherent to HOWL!! I must confess that
<H>..Wouldn't Mess With It represents the most intriguing menu item for me.

I encountered this item twice more, in the areas called "BOARD Sp00ge" and
"<F>.....Finger 'da File". In BOARD Sp00ge it appeared:

 <H>...........Hurt 'yo Self

In the file area it looked like this:

 <H>.........Big Mistake

Sort of like all those little signs that Alice encountered in 'The Looking
Glass', huh?

After all that intrigue, here's what you get by pressing <H>:

The most intriguing thing I found on HOWL!! -- handles, or aliases, are
encouraged. It's really refreshing to find a computer bulletin board system in
board-rich Houston that has a responsive, vibrant user-population, but doesn't
need to require users to leave their real names. Most boards with this
policy will find kids and perverted adults logging on to hurl obscenities
through the cyberspace. But not HOWL!! The users argue with each other
during debates, such as on abortion.

But the users appear to remain friends, recognizable personalities within
their aliases. And if they aren't friends, at least they're friendly.

Discussions might involve HOWL!! users like Zane T. Dark, Homer The Brave,
Tess Trueheart, *>KNOB<*, Black Sabbath, or Dr. Dick -- all members of the
so-named Howl'n Nation.

They're also darned unique in how they present their cyber-personas.

Take this message from Tess Trueheart, opening a new discussion in the
HOWL!! area entitled "Festering Dream":

of course... I am. Challenge is good, I like challenge...I just hate
getting lost in it...." TessLearningNewSystems

How many BBSs do you call that describe menu choices as 'mystical'?

And just for the record, Tess counter-replies:

 ==========================================================================

But the messages that moved me most appeared in the area called "BaBy FoddeR
Foo-Foo :-). Here they debated abortion.

HOWL!! user Fred has this to say, among many other comments:

 =======================================================================

The lives of those innocent babies are more important than those of the few
murderous mothers who find it necessary to murder any way they can.

 ===========================================================================

Among user Susan's comments in reply appear:

 =======================================================================

Fred, you seem to have a lot to say, and with complete sentences and
all like that. However, I do wish you would define your terms.

 ============================================================================

Of course, you can have abortion debates on any board. But what makes HOWL!!
worth calling, reading and maybe even contributing, comes when a user in
Howl's unique spirit, like Homer The Brave, enters the abortion debate with a
surprising and unique opinion:

 =======================================================================

WHO will SPEAK for the poor RABBIT, killed for the CONVENIENCE of the
might-be mother, JUST so she can KNOW WHETHER OR NOT she needs an
ABORTION!!!1!@

 ===========================================================================

Speaking up for rabbits during an abortion debate. THAT I like!

One other thing on HOWL! -- SysGod Stretch publishes an electronic 'zine
entitled "Tamer Shrew". You can contribute to the magazine by calling HOWL!!
and submitting your material. Here's what Stretch has to say:

 ============================================================================

Okay folks ... the birth of TaMER SHReW #5 has begun.

If you have any homegrown writings--poetry, fiction, philosophy,
humor, etc., ... go ahead and save them as a PLAIN ASCII .TXT

file and upload them to the "Tamer Shrew Submissions Only"
area, here at HoWL.

For those of you who don't know: Tamer Shrew is a little electronic 'zine I
put out ever few months or so, composed entirely of the works of local online
hacks/poets/miscreants that frequent this as well as many other BBS's in town
... hell ... we even had some poetry sent down from michigan one time...this
is a BIG BIG deal!! Heh. Get your words uploaded in the next three weeks or
so for publication.

 Peace...Stretch

 ============================================================================

I read "Tamer Shrew" No. 4 while on-line. It's available from the bulletin
menu (<B> Library). I can honestly say it's as diversified as any 'zine I've
viewed. This one had poetry, short stories and more. For those legendary
BBSers who refuse to use both caps and lower case, you'll find a couple of
items in beautiful ALL CAPS SO YOU GUYS WILL REALLY ENJOY THAT YOU WILL REALLY
LOVE IT I KNOW YOU WILL!!!!

Instead of giving you a couple of samples of Tamer Shrew, why not call HOWL!!
and check out the whole package for yourself? Once more the number: 862-1415.

Until next time, this is Chuck and I'm Dialing Down The Road.

Once again, for all you BBSers out there who use only capital letters in your
messages, here's a special sign-off just for you:
