                           by David Wachenschwanz

It's been nearly 2 years since CONNECT! Magazine was last published. We more
or less went on a hiatus for a summer, and just never really came back. It
was similar to going to Ireland for 10 days and deciding to stay a few years.
Of course we've been keeping busy with The Houston Area 713 BBS List (c), and
it was just a few short weeks ago that associate editor Charles Wharton and I
were having one of our usual 3 hour telephone conversations (where does he
come up with all that stuff he likes to talk about?) when all of a sudden, as
I was about to doze off (speaker-phones are great) Chuck mentioned bringing
back CONNECT! Magazine. "Well, okay" I said but quickly added "you're going
to contribute copy too!"
While we were missed, we didn't particularly miss deadlines, writing up the
copy and conducting the HOUSTON BBS SPOTLIGHT, where we would pick a Houston
BBS at random and do an in-depth interview with its SysOp. But some of you
indicated to me in a most convincing manner that was missed sorely during
our little vacation.
Chuck Wharton will be reviewing a Houston BBS every issue...but I tend to
think he'll do a better job than I did with it, although the system he picked
for this issue was chosen for its unique description in The Houston Area 713
BBS List (c), "Worst BBS in Houston." Mmmm...maybe Chuck knows something we
don't.
And a few of you said you missed the news from our nations's laboratories,
such as Los Alamos and Lawrence Livermore. I am happy to say we'll be keeping
you up to date on the strange science going on there.

Yes, I know there's a PRINTED magazine called Connect. I've read it and its
a nice little rag, lots of pretty color pictures and slick magazine paper, you
know the kind that we used to use as toilet paper when times were hard back in
Ohio.
Oh, and yes I know there's going to be a lot of confusion as to who had the
name first, etc. I say I did. And to make it unique I added the "!" so there
wouldn't be any misunderstanding, as I knew the instant I thought of the name
that someone else would want to jump on the bandwagon.
For the record, the first issue of CONNECT! Magazine was released in October
of 1991. 20 pounds and some gray hair later, here I sit again pounding out
another first edition.
Also for the record, a local Texas publication called COMPUTER CURRENTS is
displaying our Houston Area 713 BBS List (c) without our permission. You may
have noticed it as being several months old. That's being nice. It's over
a half year old.
Way back when, we allowed COMPUTER CURRENTS to reprint our list as we thought
it would be a good thing to do. What we found was COMPUTER CURRENTS inability
to print a CURRENT list (maybe they should change their name).
After a few years of this, we notified COMPUTER CURRENTS to cease reprinting
the Houston Area 713 BBS List (c). We were receiving numerous complaints on
a daily basis about the dated list CC was running.
So, if you have a gripe about the list being displayed in CC, call CC.

CONNECT! Magazine MODEM NEWS:

U.S. ROBOTICS INTRODUCES WORLDPORT DUAL STANDARD MODEM
                     AND SLASHES HIGH-SPEED PCMCIA PRICING
                            By David Wachenschwanz

*New Architecture and Design for WorldPort Line*
*Pricing Move Reinforces Position As Top-Quality Pricing Leader*

U.S. Robotics, for years the leading manufacturer of choice for BBS modems,
has announced plans to help them regain the lead in the highly competitive
modem industry.
This action was taken at a time when most BBS industry experts expected the
data communications giant to take a deep plunge into the binary twilight zone.
U.S. Robotics, who instituted the SysOp discount program for purchasing
modems, has lately been viewed as unreasonable in their dealings with SysOps,
and very insensitive to industry needs.
The Skokie Illinois based firm recently announced dramatic price reductions
on its high-speed WorldPort PCMCIA modems. The company reduced list prices
by as much as 40 percent. The new pricing is effective immediately.
Design enhancements have enabled U.S. Robotics to make this pricing move
according to a company spokesperson.
According to U.S. Robotics general manager and vice president of the personal
communications group Michael Seedman, the new prices "continue our history of
design and cost efficiency, while boosting the PCMCIA market and stimulating
growth by making the technology accessible to a greater number of users."
Meanwhile U.S. Robotics unveiled their new WorldPort Dual Standard fax modem
which is scheduled to start shipping soon.
The new WorldPort Dual Standard Fax and the WorldPort 14,400 Fax modems have
a redesigned architecture based on U.S. Robotics' proprietary DSP-based data
pump technology already found in their Courier, Sportster, Shared Access and
Total Control lines.
"Not only does the Dual Standard Fax modem give users high speed data and
fax throughput, it also includes our widely accepted HST protocol for 16.8Kbps
data transmission, and high-end features like Adaptive Speed Leveling and
Quick Connect," said Seedman. "With the Dual Standard Fax modem, users can
communicate as easily on the road as they can in the office."
At a time when proprietary architectures and protocols are being viewed by
the BBS industry in a very dim light, U.S. Robotics' position as the modem
manufacturer leader still remains on shaky grounds.

CONNECT! Magazine Shareware News:

ASSOCIATION OF SHAREWARE PROFESSIONALS RELEASE NEW CD
LOOK FOR HIGHER LEVEL OF SHAREWARE INDUSTRY PARTICIPATION AT TRADE SHOWS

If there is one thing I dreaded it was going through the monthly mailing of
shareware files from ASP, the Association of Shareware Professionals.
Half of the files wouldn't be zipped, others wouldn't have any readily
available file descriptions, some wouldn't even provide you with a clue as to
what the program did or what it was for.
To tell you the truth, all of those went right into the trash can. If a
shareware author wants their masterpieces posted on THE ATOMIC CAFE, they had
better provide the bare necessities I listed above.
I evidently wasn't alone (for once). Starting in February ASP began releasing
their monthly shareware releases on a CD ROM.
Novel idea. Too bad they screwed the first one up royal.
Thanks to George Peace's MASTER FILE MANAGER, I was able to add the ASP CD
to the Cafe's 7 CD line up with minimal effort.
 All in vein however.
A good chunk of the files contained on the initial CD had serious CRC errors
that made them useless once unzipped. The March release seems to be much
better in that respect, but why on Earth ASP does things so ass-backwards is
beyond me.
Look at the Nightowl series of shareware CD ROMS. They're very easy to put
on-line with just a .far file. All the data, all the fixins'...everything you
need is on the CD.
The ASP CD came with a lame program that was supposed to convert the file
directories into whatever format you wanted. I am used to using PC Board
style directories myself, and MFM easily converts the PC Board format over
to native TBBS format, the software that runs THE ATOMIC CAFE.
Well, the program didn't work. I had to manually copy the directories over
to another machine so I could massage them into something usable.
Instead of a generic directory naming convention like Nightowl CD's use (001A,
002A, 003A, and so forth) each subdirectory is named for what's supposedly
in each one...ASP_ILES for ASP Files, EDUCTICS for education-mathematics,
EDUCENCE for education-science, etc.
As long as they don't change oars in mid-stroke, that will work. But if they
start renaming the subdirectories with each CD release, it will be a major job
for SysOps to ready the disc for BBS airplay.
Also, no .far or lead directory was provided...gotta make your own.
All in all, if the bugs are worked out and if the quality control shapes up,
the monthly ASP CD will be a welcomed addition to many member systems. I know
I don't miss throwing dozens of diskettes away.
Now all I have to do is toss a single CD. Neat.
Speaking of shareware, and of course that is what we are all speaking about
these days with the multitudes of file suckers that seem to come in to our
systems out of the woodwork, the shareware industry is getting its act toget-
her and will be a key player in many of this years up-coming industry conven-
tions.

Many pranksters have appeared on Fidonet echoes -- leaving silly messages and
comments, then running away to watch reactions to their work.

I can't use a word as tame as _prank_ to describe what happened February 22
in Fidonet's International Chess Echo, when a Montreal-based cyber-vandal who
had worked his way to Echo Moderator confessed to faking his chess prowess --
actually _her_ prowess, since he used his little sister's name, possibly
without her knowledge, to moderate.

"All I can say is: wow! And the poseur ended up as moderator of the Chess
Echo!?" reacts accomplished chess player and echo-user David Myers.

I will forever think of Alec as Fidonet's Great Imposter.

"The truth is I'm just a nobody who got fascinated and caught up in a
personality I invented on-line and was pretty happy," says Alec Goudreau, the
one we knew as Canadian high school chess prodigy Rita Goudreau, in a public
confession on Fidonet's International Chess Echo.

I must admit that I loved looking at Rita's games where she beat the dickens
out of her school-tournament foes. She also performed solidly against E-Mail
opponents in the echo. By February of this year, Alec had let Rita quickly
advance to his own age of 22 -- a tip something had gone wrong. Rita's
Canadian scholastic rating of 1400 rocketed up with her age, hitting 2011 on
Canada's official list by one Goudreau report, which later proved bogus.

Also, some people should have noticed that Alec and Theresa misspelled the
same words in the same way. Rita published an article in the echo titled,
_Advice for Beginners and Amatures_. And in Alec's confession and elsewhere,
he repeatedly misspelled _amateur_ the same way. Theresa played chess, but
didn't talk much.

The over-the-board tournament games she posted were in the form of notations
corresponding to the chessboard, so Rita's fans could recreate her glorious
victories on their own boards or chess computers.

Rita certainly represented the kind of power-player I would like to become
one day. She had been a great echo moderator, too, over the past year or so. I
miss her. One Chess Echo user lambasted another when he expressed dismay and
betrayal after the confession, accusing him of trying to write Rita snail mail
just to get a picture back and see how cute she was.

Alec, who is in his 20s, also introduced Theresa Goudreau, who got in
relatively few games before her creator got infected with honesty. Theresa
was there for us who liked to watch a decent-playing female of more mature
years than Rita.

Alec humbly reminisced about his reign, as Rita, over the echo,
"helping beginners and amateurs and teaching them tricks I learned, and
openings and stuff."

Of course, Fidonet doesn't have a certification system for
moderators. Each echo represents a dictatorship -- the property of the
moderators. They invent the echo rules and decide what topics can be
discussed and what happens if they decide to censure a user.

Most echoes so structured make it impossible for moderators to commit fraud
in the act of moderating, even though one might be a pathological liar in the
message base. Pick an echo for yourself and think about it.

Take Fidonet's UFO Echo for example. How does a moderator of that echo get in
Alec's predicament? Unless the echo rules would require the moderator to be an
expert abductee of aliens or veteran sighter of flying saucers -- and later the
moderator prove himself not that -- what's the problem?

So the immediate question for the default moderator left holding Fidonet's
International Chess Echo bag -- What to do about Alec/Rita/Theresa Goudreau?

The decision -- Bill Spinks, the default moderator, expelled all Goudreaus,
real or otherwise, for six months, "perhaps for good." The echo crime: fraud.

Besides logging on under several different names, Alec had posted a fake
Canadian chess rating of 2011 and had displayed several big _Rita_ wins from
fictitious tournaments. Some of the games listed real ranked opponents.

"My reason is that causing false, or deceptive messages to be sent on a
public medium is an offense, both in Canada, and the U.S.," Spinks says to
Alec. "The no doubt well-meaning amateur sysops who entered your posts of
non-existent games with persons prominent in international chess could have
been held to account, had a reputation been damaged. Had your motives been
mercenary, they could possibly be sanctioned for permitting wire fraud,
knowingly or not."

"In truth I actually learned many things here from users who taught
me so much," Alec confesses. "In fact, I'm not even a rated Player."

Later in the confession, however, Alec reports he's a 1400-rated
Canadian correspondence (postal) player, which means he's a lot better
than I am -- poor as that is. In fact, even if he's making that rating up,
too, he's probably better than me, if only when he's bluffing.

The made-up games wins against internationally ranked players in a hoax
tournament brought the Goudreau cyber-house down.

Another Canadian echo user, Vojin Vujosevic, took much heat from other users
when he began questioning the accomplishments. He even got a reprimand from
Co-Moderator Bill Spinks, who later apologized after the confession.

"I resent your attack on a lady who has done much for the International Chess
Echo," Spinks fired at Vujosevic. "Further messages of this type will
result in your expulsion from this conference."

Vujosevic noted that Rita's sister, Theresa, had related news of checkmates
of Rita's against top women opponents, Svetlana Matveeva of Russia, no. 16
woman player worldwide, and Irina Chelushkina of Ukraine, no. 42 globally.
Rita took a draw from Alisa Maric, who had stood as the third top woman only
two years ago.

Rita's wins came at the Schiffers Invitational Memorial Tournament in
Hamburg, which proved missing from lists of German chess events, supposedly
named for an historic Russian player.

"Why would Germans think so highly of Emmanuel Stepanovich Schiffers,
although he was a great player, to have a tournament in his honor?" Vujosevic
asked Goudreau. "And the prizes were distributed in Swiss Francs, not Deutsche
Marks. Did I miss something?"

Vujosevic immediately tracked down a noted Canadian player, Dianne Mongeau of
Quebec, who had fallen shamefully to Rita in the cyber-world of Fidonet's
International Chess Echo. But in the physical world Mongeau had never heard of
Rita.

Vujosevic also surveyed the Montreal chess scene where Rita accessed the
echo. He couldn't find the chess club spoken of in the echo. The Goudreau's
_Uncle Joe_ was said to operate this club "frequented by wealthy Grand
Masters and their bodyguards."

Although Vujosevic had no proof, he went so far as to question Rita's
physical regimen she used to keep in top fighting-chess shape. The routine
included 314 Marine push-ups, which Vujosevic doubts many Marines could
accomplish.

Once Alec confessed, Vujosevic expressed the same frustration and regret most
Chess Echo users did. But he also showed compassion toward Fidonet's Great
Imposter and immediately left him a message of forgiveness.

"I stupidly expected people to thank me," Vujosevic writes. "But it seems so
many are gullible and believe authority and headlines without questioning
anything. On the other hand when I read Alec Goudreau's confession, I wished I
never gotten involved."

Alec even got testy about the gullibility.

"I think it was really idiotic of some people to have believed I was
(rated) 2011, when in fact all it would take was the latest edition of
En Passent (Canadian chess) magazine to confirm I was not speaking the
truth.

"All the games you saw were mostly those between Private Parties or others. I
never really faced those players mentioned. I know now a certain part of me
will forever carry much regret and pain for what I have done. But I have
cleansed myself in telling the truth and coming forth and being confronted
right here and now."

Accomplished players on the echo also wondered how they had been
taken in, since many of today's chess experts keep exhaustive
databases of games on their personal computers. They can type in moves from
one game and compare them to all others in the database.

"Stupid question perhaps, but did anyone ever run any of these 'games'
through a chess database to see if any of them were perhaps genuine
games played by genuine players (say Ivanchuk-Anand or
Botvinnik-Tal)?" asks another Canadian user, Lyle Craver.

"Just curious -- seems to me that inventing games from scratch is a LOT
more work than pulling one off of a database file"

Craver signs off with the astounding historical note that Alec's fake
games aren't the first in chess history, "The only famous fake
game I know of is the Alekhine-Grigoriev 5 Queen game where Alekhine
published analysis as the game continuation."

Alec called off all events he had planned as Rita the Moderator. One echo
participant, Jerry Bernier of River Falls, Wisconsin, caught in the heat of a
middle-game against Rita, called out in a message to Alec, "No one gives a
**** what name you use, PLAY ON!!! Come back Rita!"

1. d4 e6
2. e4 c5
3. nf3 cxd4

So far so go white has brought out his Knight and his central pawns are
devloped but from here on end he goes down hard.

4. H4? Bb4+
5. C3 dxc3
6. Ng5? cxb2

Not paying attention inattentive and now he is in check
and will lose. This is typical Play of people who
never or if ever touch a chess board before and have only the extreme basic
ideas of play.

7. Ke2? bxa1=Q
8. a4? Qxb1
9. Be3 Qa2+
10. Kd3 Nc6
11. F3 Ne5+
12. Kd4 Qb2 Checkmate.

This type of Play is ugly and inexcusable on the part of white. But we must ask
why it happened in the first place he failed to play the correct move 4. Nxd4
which would have been correct. The move 4. H4 is completly wrong. Next when
black played 5. Dxc3 white had to respond to this threat so 6. Ng5 was also
wrong, because the next move I toast his rook and put him in discovered check [
Thats a piece moving out of the way and either forking a piece and attacking it
while another piece places the opposing king in Check.
Next you want to keep as many pieces towards the center
because thats where they are the strongest.
If you put a Knight by itself in the center of a chess board you can see it is
very powerful because it can attack in 6 directions. If it was on h1 it can
only attack 2 squares g3 and f2 so you can see what I mean. The most important
things to remember are that chess consists of three elements time, force and
space. The faster you develop castle and bring your pieces out and mobile your
army the better your chances of not getting viciously slaughtered like David
was. But the opening is only a devloping stage the middle game is the actual
battle and how you plan and mobolize your army will have a direct affect on how
the course of the contest will shape, the endgame is when the middle game battle
is over, many pieces are exchanged off and the remaining forces fight it out.

CONNECT! Magazine CRITICAL MASS

BETTER UNDERSTANDING STARS AND THE BIG BANG
                                   -and-
              MOLECULAR ENGINEERING AIDS MICROSENSOR DEVELOPMENT

Astrophysicists seeking to understand the unseen interiors of stars and
the first few moments of cosmic expansion during the big bang could get a big
lift from the proposed National Ignition Facility of the U.S. Department of
Energy.
The NIF is a project that would attempt to achieve controlled nuclear fusion
with powerful lasers to heat and compress isotopes of hydrogen until they
"fuse" (in "mini-cosmic" explosions) into helium, producing large amounts of
energy in a reaction much like what takes place in the sun.
Lawrence Livermore astrophysicist Grant Mathews recently delivered a talk
on the subject to the American Chemical Society in San Diego.
The way in which the DOE's National Ignition facility would work follows\
from an upgrade of existing technology such as that developed for facilities
like the Nova laser at Lawrence Livermore.
If the NIF facility is built, it will focus hundreds of trillions of watts
of laser power onto a small capsule for a few billionths of a second.
The ensuing explosion could compress matter within the capsule to very high
density while heating it to hundreds of millions of degrees.
By carefully selecting the laser and capsule design, it should be possible
to reproduce conditions that occur within the stars, supernovae, and the big
bang, although only for a tiny fraction of a second.
Also presented at the March 17, 1994 meeting in San Diego was an overview
of Los Alamos National Laboratory's efforts to fabricate tiny chemical sensors
from molecular-level engineering.
Los Alamos researchers successfully modified several different molecules so
one part of the molecule anchored itself directly to a detector and another
part extended as a trap tailored to nab specific chemicals.
Because the sensing molecules bond directly to the detector (becoming part
of the surface of the detector that is exposed to the environment) they could
form a sturdy, simple device for reliably sensing organic toxins and hazardous
materials under real-world conditions.
"We are building on two decades of scientific effort in chemical recognition,
the design of molecules that can bind specific other molecules," Los Alamos
researcher Basil Swanson said.
"We've focused our efforts on detecting solvents such as chlorinated hydro-
carbons, but the approach we are using is flexible and could be applied to
detecting other organic molecules or metals such as lead, cadmium or pluton-
ium."
Swanson said he and his colleagues also are looking at this approach as a way
of not just sensing contaminants but also removing them from the environment.

WHAT'S THE SOUND OF A COMET HITTING JUPITER?

This July, when the 20 or so fragments of comet Shoemaker-Levy slam into
Jupiter, Los Alamos scientists hope to be listening.
If the timing works out between the fragments hitting Jupiter, travel time
of radio signals to Earth and position of the ALEXIS satellite in orbit,
scientists will program the Blackbeard receiver onboard ALEXIS to listen for
radio emissions created as the comet fragments pass through and distort
Jupiter's ionosphere.
The observations, if successful, will help confirm theories of how the
energy delivered by the comet pieces couples to Jupiter's immense ionosphere.
Blackbeard, which can record a wide range of radio frequencies simultan-
eously, recently discovered radio bursts coming from an as-yet unknown source
in Earth's atmosphere.

                    LOS ALAMOS REVEALS SPIDERMAN FEATS

A patented magnetic device designed, developed and tested at Los Alamos
allows a climber to scale vertical or overhead steel surfaces, moving like
Spiderman in a Marvel comic.
The magnets, worn on the hands and feet, clamp to the sides of iron or steel
structures and weigh about two pounds.
To attach the gripping device to a surface, the climber rotates the hand or
toe clip downward. Rounded cams bring the magnets in contact with the surface.
To release, the climber rotates the clip upward, causing the longer cam to
smoothly lift one side of the magnet.
The action of this cam requires about half the force needed to release the
entire device. The hand gripper adheres to surfaces with as much as two
millimeters of paint.
Applications include inspection of bridges, towers, ships, oil rigs, smoke-
stacks and storage tanks.

                 LABORATORY TOOL PROVIDES CLIMATE INSIGHTS

Researchers are using an old technique to provide new insights into regional
climate histories.
Using improved mass spectrometry, Los Alamos researchers have studied uranium
isotopes found in stalagmite cores from a cave in Iowa.
The improved dating method provides extremely accurate data, never before
possible.
Mass spectrometry is an old technology, but because of better equipment and
computers, researchers can provide an absolute time scale, plus or minus 7
years, with the capability to look at climate changes in the last 5,000 years
on a decade-by-decade scale.
Caves are a good source for regional climate studies because as water
percolates down through the soil and deposits in the cave, it picks up isotopes
that have particular signatures for certain ecosystems.
Los Alamos researchers accurately dated Iowa climate events that turned
forest land into prairie during the last 8,000 years.

                LANL'S COMPUTER CODES SIMULATE MICROCIRCUITS

Los Alamos has brought the possibility of a wrist watch-sized computer closer
to reality by developing accurate simulation codes for designing high-
frequency devices such as portable phones and microchips.
As companies design smaller devices that operate on very high frequencies,
they need computer simulation codes to provide information on component per-
formance, particularly how the smaller components are affected by electro-
magnetic energy.
By applying expertise used in the Strategic Defense Initiative and advanced
weapons, Los Alamos has developed modeling codes to simulate electronic behav-
ior at frequencies up to 10 gigahertz (10,000,000,000 hertz), 100 times greater
than FM radio signals.
Current circuit designs fail beyond 200 megahertz. Los Alamos scientists
are adding more electromagnetic physics to their computer models to simulate
the magnetic cross-talk that occurs in high-frequency electronics.

                        IMAGE COMPRESSION FOR PCs

Los Alamos and Sun Country Software of Albuquerque have signed a license for
a software technique that compresses 24-bit graphic images into smaller 8-bit
images without loss of resolution for IBM-type computers.
The software makes available to personal computers some of the sophisticated
graphics compression techniques that previously were available only to work
stations and supercomputers.

                    SELF-ASSEMBLING COMPUTER COMPONENTS

A collaboration between Los Alamos, Yale University and the University of
South Carolina is exploring the potential for developing systems of atoms that
can automatically assemble needed components for microscopic computers.
Los Alamos supports this so-called "nanotechnology" development effort
through theoretical modeling and simulations run on its advanced computers;
collaborators at Yale and South Carolina have produced the first samples of
self-assembling wires and are studying their characteristics.
The partners now seek to build molecular wires with self-attaching contacts
at the ends, and to make three-wire assemblies for transistors.
The joint effort is an important step toward the science and technology base
needed to explore the realm of nanotechnology.

FIRST RUSSIAN CITIZEN TO WORK ON THE HILL

Alexander Balatsky, a Russian citizen born in Ukraine, is working at Los
Alamos National Laboratory under a prestigious J.R. Oppenheimer Fellowship.
Balatsky works in the Laboratory's Center for Materials Science on problems
in condensed matter physics, providing theoretical insight into experiments
being conducted in material studies.
Balatsky, the first Russian to have a fulltime staff position at Los Alamos
(there have been visiting scientists from Russia in the past) says he heard
enough KGB jokes in his first weeks at the Lab to last a lifetime.
He stays current on the state of scientific research in Russia by
communicating through the electronic mail network with his scientific
colleagues there.

                      FINGERPRINTING THE AIDS VIRUS

A technique called "signature pattern analysis" provides researchers a tool
for establishing whether samples of the AIDS-causing human immunodeficiency
virus isolated from different individuals are genetically related--that is,
did they have a common source or is there evidence of transmission from one
person to the other.
By helping determine the source of HIV infection, signature pattern analysis
can provide useful information in legal cases and for making informed decisions
concerning public health policy.
The technique, which looks for distinctive patterns of amino acid or nucleic
acid sequences in variable regions of the virus' overall genetic structure,
builds upon work done at Los Alamos investigating the transmission of HIV from
a Florida dentist to some of his patients.

CALLING A BBS AND YOU CAN'T GET AN ANSWER? Many System Operators will take
their BBS down during thunderstorm activity. We encourage SysOps to take
their phone line "off hook" to busy the line out during these periods of non-
service. Some do, some don't. If you can't get through, try again later.

If you are the SysOp of a BBS and wish to have your system listed in
Houston's largest and most accurate BBS list, call THE ATOMIC CAFE BBS at 713-

Houston Area 713 BBS List (c) Center. Select <4> to add a system or to change
your system. Select <5> to remove your system from the list. In either case,
you will be asked to answer a questionnaire for EACH line you wish to list.
The service is FREE. We reserve the right to refuse to list any system that
we feel may be inappropriate to list.
Sorry, NO VOICE CALLS concerning your listing.

Here are a few other things to keep in mind ...

*FidoNet BBS systems dedicate one hour a day to mail exchange. That hour is
normally from 4-5 a.m. central time, or 3-4 a.m. central daylight time. Most
FidoNet nodes will not accept a call from a human user during that time, but

*Houston is a VERY VOLATILE BBS market. Systems up one day may be down for
good on the next. For every system to goes down, there are usually 2 or 3 to
replace it. Therefore, it is vital that you always do your BBS dialing from a
RECENT list.

=============================================================================

Other than the fact these people aren't behind bars, they are just the kind
of Sysops I would be, if my parole officer allowed me to run a board.

But seriously, there are no more responsive Sysops in Houston than this group
of Bob Cargo and Steve Artificavitch. Currently, they don't have the cash for
a large enough-capacity hard drive for people to share a lot of files, so
there aren't any to download in the Files Directory.

This is mainly a text-oriented games board, featuring Tradewars, TW2002
(another Tradewars game), Land of Barons, Star Fight, VGA Planets and others
on the way. Policy fully explained in this from the board:

==============================================================================
                           N E W S L E T T E R

This BBS is dedicated to games...tw2002 and VGA Planets. What I want is a
place where I can go to kill something while I build my Empires. If you aren't
happy with a kill everything attitude, you may not like my little board. If
you enjoy blood and guts...on a BBS only...stay and play. If you are psychotic,
pleaseeeee, lose this number!

This BBS operates using the whatever I have thrown out there. It is available
for purchase for an outrageous fee. I will gladly send you a copy for all legal
fees required to cover my butt and a small profit of 10 million dollars, after
taxes. Otherwise...don't ask!

===============================================================================

Besides the games, _Shot in the Dark_ has message bases where players can
discuss game tips and troubles. Also, a couple of message areas support
programmer exchanges, especially programming in C, BASIC and Pascal. If you
want to chat with programmers, here's a nice, uncrowded, smart alternative to
those computer club meetings full of anti-social nerds in smelly shirts. When
I've attended such meetings, responses to my questions have ranged from vacant
stares to vigorous scratching and powerful shots of body odor. At _Shot_
there's folks who talk, at least.

The Sysops haven't hocked themselves into oblivion for this BBS service. But
they do a lot with it and they don't ask users for any money, just honesty in
registering and courtesy in the message bases -- well, at least as much
courtesy as they exhibit! But no bad language, please.

I found the menu selections easy to make, as they usually are on boards using
Wildcat software. But the feature I must strongly praise -- non-verbose menu
help. Here's their initial menu help screen:

Often when I need help to get somewhere on a board, there's a lot of verbose
nonsense instead of the help I need right away. This Sysop gibberish mostly
muses on forever about why I would look for menu help, instead of telling me
what I need to know to keep moving, as _Shot_ does.

Then, if I really do need help on those other boards, I have to wade through
a full screen or so detailing the beauty and art of each key. Gee whiz! This
is like asking somebody the time, and the guy spending the next several hours
telling you how to build a damned watch!

Laud and honor to the Sysops of _Shot_ for their useful initial menu help
screen. Notice, too, that if you need more help than that, all you have to do
is head for the Sub-Menus. You'll get it.

As you've gathered by now, the Sysops at _Shot_ really aren't the WORST.
I found them responsive, friendly and anxious to share their good
work with all the callers. They're among the best.

I'd recommend you check them out and if you like what you find -- I think you
will -- contribute some messages, some game-playing time and maybe a few bucks
for that hard drive. Then they could put up some files for us to download and
it would give them some more opportunities to hand out some more abuse!

===============================================================================
It's about time you hung up. Can't believe you spent 30 minutes
on the system this call! What, do you think you're special?!!

Hey Caller, call back later so I can continue this abuse!

This has been A Shot In The Dark BBS user slam, call back for more...
