      BACKGROUND

RAMBoost is a memory manager by Central Point Software that is
included with PC Tools and IBM's PC-DOS 6.x. It is normally
installed by running a program called RAMSETUP.EXE. This program
will not run on compressed drives. However, you may use RAMBoost
by manually installing it in your CONFIG.SYS.

      SOLUTION

         - If using Stacker with DOS versions that support preloading.
         - If using other DOS versions.

If using Stacker with DOS versions that support preloading

      MS-DOS 6.x, Novell DOS 7, and most releases of PC-DOS 6.x support
preloading compression drivers like Stacker. If Stacker loads
before your CONFIG.SYS file, use the procedures below.

       1. Edit your CONFIG.SYS file by typing ED /C <enter> at the DOS
           prompt.
       2. Examine your CONFIG.SYS file for a memory manager such as
EMM386.EXE or QEMM386.SYS. Move your cursor to that line and
press the END key and then the ENTER key. This will insert a
blank line, and will move your cursor to that line.
       3. Type:
           DEVICE=C:\DOS\RAMBOOST.EXE LOAD
       4. RAMBoost does not coexist with other loadhigh methods.
Remove any loadhigh or devicehigh statements from other
lines in your CONFIG.SYS. See your RAMBoost documentation
           for details.
       5. Press CTRL-Z to save the file.
       6. Remove any loadhigh statements from any lines in your
AUTOEXEC.BAT, just as you did with the CONFIG.SYS in step 4.
       7. Restart your system and follow the instructions on the
screen. RAMBoost will cause another reboot and will optimize
           your system's memory.
       8. If you have a CD-ROM drive, or add one later, you may need
to modify your RAMBoost configuration to access it. Contact
your RAMBoost provider for instructions on making these
           modifications.

      If using other DOS versions

       1. Edit your CONFIG.SYS file by typing ED /C <enter> at the DOS
           prompt.
       2. Examine your CONFIG.SYS file for a memory manager such as
EMM386.EXE or QEMM386.SYS. Move your cursor to that line and
press the END key and then the ENTER key. This will insert a
blank line, and will move your cursor to that line.
       3. Type:
           DEVICE=C:\DOS\RAMBOOST.EXE LOAD
       7. Type STACKER <enter>. You will see a drive map which will
           look something this:
           Drive C was drive C at boot time [ D:\STACVOL.DSK = 123.4MB
              ]
Drive D was drive D at boot time
Locate the line listing drive C and note the drive letter in
brackets. That is your uncompressed boot drive. In this
           example it is drive D.
       8. Change to the DOS directory on the uncompressed boot drive.
Look for a subdirectory called DATA. If it exists, change to
it. If it does not exist, type MD DATA <enter> then change
           to the DATA directory.
       9. Copy the file RAMBoost files from the C drive. Type:
           COPY C:\DOS\RAM*.* <enter>
       10. Restart your system and follow the instructions on the
screen. RAMBoost will cause another reboot and will optimize
           your system's memory.
