                      NO ADDITIONAL SPACE AFTER UPGRADE

      BACKGROUND

After you upgrade to Stacker 4.0, you may find that you have no
additional space. You may be near the DOS limits for your drive,
your drive may not have been updated to Stacker 4.0's SmartPack,
or your Actual Compression Ratio (ACR) and Expected Compression
Ratio (ECR) need adjustment. If your Stacker drive is near 512
MB, 1024 MB or 2048 MB you are probably near the DOS limits. See
StacFax 4007 for details on this condition.

If a Stacker drive is not updated, there are usually errors on
the drive. If you receive a message that the drive is too
fragmented to update, see StacFax 4008. If you receive a message
during Setup that CHKDSK errors have been found, the drive will
not update. Follow the procedures below to repair your drive.

If your drive updates normally and the Optimizer runs Full-
MaxSpace, yet you get no additional space on the drive, follow
the procedures to match the ECR to the ACR.

      SOLUTION

         - Procedures if the drive has CHKDSK errors.
         - Procedures to match the ECR to the ACR.

Procedures if the drive has CHKDSK errors

Repair the errors on the drive, re-run Setup, and run the Stacker
      Optimizer.

       1. At the DOS prompt type CHECK /F drive:
where drive: is your Stacker drive. Allow CHECK to make any
necessary repairs. Do this for each Stacker drive on your
           system.
       2. At the DOS prompt type CHKDSK /F drive:
where drive: is the drive you are repairing. Allow CHKDSK to
perform repairs. Do this for each drive, compressed and
uncompressed on your system. Note: CHKDSK will not repair
cross-linked files. You must use a Disk Repair Utility
(Norton Disk Doctor, PC Tools Diskfix) or you must delete
           the files.
       3. If you are running DR-DOS, and CHKDSK finds no errors,
unhide the Stacvol file and run CHKDSK /F again.
           a. Type C:\STACKER\STACKER <enter>
           b. Note all the drive letters that are listed in brackets.
           For example:
           Drive C was drive C at boot time [ E:\STACVOL.DSK = nnn ]
In this case drive E is the uncompressed drive that holds a
           Stacvol file.
           c. Insert Stacker 4.0 Disk 1 into its drive, go to that
           drive and type:
           \TOOLS\CSA drive:
where drive: is the letter you noted above. In this example
it is E:. Do this for each drive letter in brackets.
           d. Run CHKDSK /F against all your drives again, and make
           repairs to the drives.
           e. Remove the Stacker Disk from its drive and restart your
           system.
       4. Run the Stacker Setup again in accordance with page 6 of the
           Stacker 4.0 User's Guide.
       5. After you complete the Setup, run the Stacker Optimizer to
recompress your drive. You may choose Optimize from the
Stacker Toolbox and select Full-MaxSpace. Or you may type
SDEFRAG /R <enter> at the DOS prompt

Procedures to match the ECR to the ACR

If you get an improved ACR after upgrade, yet you have no
additional disk space, follow these procedures:

       1. From the DOS prompt, type: REPORT <enter>.
       2. When the File Information screen is displayed, press the
right arrow key one time to Show Summary.
       3. The top half of the Summary screen will show the Expected vs
the Actual Compression Ratios. If the ACR is higher than the
ECR, then you will not get any additional disk space.
       4. Press F10 to Exit Report.
       5. Change the ECR to match the ACR. At the DOS prompt type:
           SDEFRAG /GL /H drive: <enter>
where drive: is the Stacker drive you wish to change.
       6. The Optimizer will first fully Optimize the Stacker drive.
You will then be presented with a range of Expected
Compression Ratios, and will be prompted to type in your
           selection.
       7. Type in the ECR that matches your ACR and press <enter>.
Choose "Perform Changes on Stacker Drive" at the next
           screen.
       8. After you are returned to the DOS prompt, restart your
           system.
