Alice Hughes reported that they had completed filing the LDS
microfiche into envelopes; it was now available in the LCGS
collection at the Smiths Falls Public Library.

Jim Carter and Eric Knudsen gave a description of the bulletin
board Certa Cito and asked about the possibility of having the

The regular monthly meeting of the LCGS was held on Aug. 3, 1994
at the Victoria School Museum, 267 Edmund Street in Carleton
Place. The President opened the meeting at 8pm and welcomed
everyone.

Members in attendance included: J.F. Belisle, Evelyn Bowes,
Walter Brown, Constance & Howard Brown, Cecil Buck, Marion
Cavanagh, Warren & Margaret Craig, Margaret Clifford, Reva
Dolgoy, Russ Ford, Helen Gillan, Jean Hossie, George & Doreen
Hughes, Lorne Hunt, John Morrow, Don Oliver and Marilyn Snedden.

Treasurer Helen Gillan reported a bank balance of 2089.60 after a
$55.00 deposit for membership dues. There is a post office box
payment of $61.53 as yet unpaid. Motion by Ruth Crowder and
seconded by Don Oliver that the bill for postal box rental be
paid.

Walter Brown advised that the opening of the LDS Family Research
Center in Smiths Falls is presently on hold, but the security
system has been installed.

Marilyn Snedden donated a copy of her book "The Snedden Saga" to
the LCGS library in Smiths Falls. A "thank you" is extended to
Marilyn, the book will be a splendid addition to the collection.

The meeting was a memorable one in that for the first time we
found our President, Marilyn Snedden, at a loss for words (either
large or small). One of the visitors turned out to be someone
who had attended school with Marilyn. The moral of this story is
you should attend every meeting because you do not know who is
going to turn up, might be a ghost from your closet!

Marilyn then introduced the curator of the Victoria School
Museum, Reva Dolgoy, who spoke of sickness and health in the
towns at the turn of the century Reva then led the group on a
tour of the museum where the current exhibit is titled "In
sickness and in health - good for man and beast". The exhibit
was most interesting; we would encourage everyone to have a look
at this current display.

DOWLING, DOYLE- I am a descendant of David DOWLING, a Peter
Robinson settler in 1823, and of Thomas DOYLE who settled in
Drummond Twp. in the early 1820s. My father John Earle was born
and grew up in Perth. If any members are doing research into
these families, I would be glad to hear from them.

FERGUSON- Mary "Andrew" FERGUSON, wife of William FERGUSON of
Dalhousie, Lanark Co. died 25 June, no year given (possibly 1899-
1900). It seems that a number of records for that area were
destroyed by fire and I don't know if there are newspapers for
Snow Road and MacDonald's Corners area. I would appreciate it if
someone could supply me with a date or more information on my
great grandmother.

                           WELCOME TO CERTA CITO

At the last meeting of the Lanark County Genealogical Society I
opened my mouth and requested permission to post issues of the
L.C.G.S. newsletter on Certa Cito, a local computer bulletin
board whose emphasis is on genealogy. The membership kindly
agreed to this request. Shortly thereafter, "Silver Tongue"
Snedden, never one to miss an opportunity, buttonholed me and
asked if we would be willing to write a monthly segment for the
L.C.G.S. newsletter. This is the first of those columns.

Eric Knudsen and I, Jim Carter, are the co-operators of Certa
Cito and it is our intention to alternate writing the computer
articles for this newsletter. We hope, even if you do not use
the bulletin board, that we can provide information to you about
what is a0/ilable. In this, the first of the monthly articles, I
think it appropriate to describe how the computer bulletin board
fits into the larger picture of genealogy.

The computer bulletin board is nothing more than another tool in
the genealogist's research arsenal. It provides an inexpensive
(free) link between the researcher and the rest of the world, all
from the comfort of his living room or den at almost any time of
the day or night. The bulletin board provides two primary
functions to the researcher - messages, and a database of
information files. In this first article, I will consider just
the message service.

In the "old days" (1978), a message could be posted on a single
bulletin board only. The computer bulletin boards were populated
by a group of people who were interested in exchanging
information about, you guessed it, computers! A message posted
on one of these bulletin boards never left that system. Other
people could call up to that same bulletin board and read the
message and if the message contained a question, these subsequent
callers could answer it. It was a friendly environment inhabited
by those with similar interests.

Then two bulletin board operators, who were also programmers,
started talking about how nifty it would be if a message posted
on one of their boards could be "echoed" to the bulletin board
operated by the other. That way, callers to one bulletin board
could read the messages, and respond to the queries that were
posted on the other bulletin board. Other bulletin board
operators saw this and asked if they too could have their
bulletin boards hooked in. What is now known as "echomail" was
born.

Time passed and people began talking on the "echo" about things
other than computers. The message traffic in this one "echo"
grew to unmanageable proportions and it was clear that something
had to be done, else the whole thing would fall apart under its
own weight. The solution was obvious, divide the one large
"echo" into several smaller ones, each covering only one area of
discussion: cars, cooking, rare diseases etc. Of course,
genealogy became one of these specialized "echoes" (and one of
the most popular, by the way). Genealogy was so popular that the
genealogy echo had to be sub-divided even more. There are now
"echoes" dealing with direct research ("I am looking for
information about Thomas Mott, who lived in Rhode Island in
1650", as an example), "echoes" for those researching European
ancestors, a Canadian genealogy "echo" and on and on and on.
This growth occurred because the genealogy "echoes" were such a
success at helping researchers in their work. It is unusual for
a query about a person who lived 2-3 hundred years ago to NOT
receive replies from others who are researching the same family,
usually living on a different part of the continent (or the
world). In almost all cases, the contact results in additional
information and lines for all the researchers. The researchers
exchange Snail Mail addresses (our term for the Postal Service)
and then books and photocopies begin weighing down the poor
mailman as the genealogists send their printed documents. The
point here is that by putting researchers into contact with each
other, the computer bulletin board is often able to save years of
effort in chasing down a family history. If two heads are better
than one, then hundreds can get the job done much faster!

The "problem" the researcher has is not one of finding
information, but how to separate the information useful to his
research from the information of interest to others. This
"problem" can be overcome quickly and simply, but that is a topic
for another day.

Finally, even when direct assistance is not forthcoming, it is
common to receive replies from persons living in the area being
researched giving advice about possible sources of information,
particularly about books that may have received only local or
regional distribution.

Next issue, Eric will talk about the database (files) of research
material available on Certa Cito. If anyone has any questions
about the bulletin board, please ask us.

Telephone numbers for Certa Cito are: 264-9093 and
