If you are having trouble, especially with faxing on your Mac, the
trouble is very often your inits. Try disabling them (remove them from the
extensions folder, under the system folder). Then reboot the computer and
try again. Some common problems are anti-virus, screen savers, spoolers or
font handlers. Inits can also cause an 'out of memory' problem, because of
too many installed, or a pointer to some area in memory. If the trouble is
data mode, turn fax OFF in the dialog box.

The usual initialization string for a Mac AT&F&C1&D0
(on High-Speed modems try adding %E3 to string)

                        Checking for Conflicts

The best test to see if a modem is OK, is in the Data software.
Install the data software (most often Microphone Lite). Then in Terminal
mode can you type AT and get an OK reply? If not then the modem either
isn't displaying the echo or not getting the command. Try ATA and see if
you hear the modem pick up the telephone line and start squealing. If it
does, the modem is getting and responding to the command and probably is OK
and there is a computer hardware/driver conflict (modem, mouse, scanner and
so forth). The RD/SD LEDs should blink breifly as you type commands. If
only the SD blinks the modem is probably defective.

If the RD/SD lights are on steady then most likely it is a defective
cable or wrong (null-modem) cable, although it's also a possible defective
serial port. Some cables used with old 1200/2400 modems also will not work,
as they have too few wires inside for hardware control of a v42bis modem.
If the Mac serial cable was not included in the Zoom box, it may be the
wrong cable. You need either a 'universal' cable or a hardware flow control
cable. If you have Mac you cannot use a printer cable (though they look the
same as a modem cable).

If none of these produce any response, the modem most likely is
defective.

If you're using MaxFax put &F&C1&D0 in the now empty Initialization
string and Save. NOTE: some known problems w/MaxFax - Gatekeeper, Sam,
Virex, MemInit, CopyDoubler. NOTE: MaxFax should be installed the 1st time
with all extensions OFF, then re-boot the computer after installation.

If you use FAX software other than what is supplied with the
Zoom/faxmodem, contact the Mfr of the software.

The software we supply is not intended for use on a 'lan' and we don't
support it as such. The modems will work OK with proper software. COntact
your software/lan supplier for help.
