                          Using Distinctive Ring

When you receive a call the telephone will ring in patterns (like an old
party line) which the modem will recognise. While you can have up to 4
different rings, commonly you have two, maybe three. They are RING A, B, C,
and D, RING C is uncommon.
On a Zoom Faxmodem that supports Distinctive Ring (Ringmate), you can
use AT '$$' commands to tell the modem how to react to each ring. You can
tell the modem to ignore RING A, let the software handle RING B, and answer
RING D as data, for example. >>> DO NOT use ATS0=1 when using distinctive
ring <<<

If the software does not recognise A or B after RING, the maximum number of
Ringmate numbers is two. (your modem can use only ONE of them). You set
AT$$R1 which tells the modem to recognise the rings, but not to print the A
B etc. You can set the modem to ignore RING A, and then specify what it
will do for RING B (or RING D). This may be telling the modem to let the
software handle the call, or to take a certain action.

     For example:
  AT$$R1$$A1$$B0 (don't print A-B, Ignore RING A, software answer RING B)
AT$$R1$$A1$$B1$$D0 (same but ignore A-B, software answer RING D)
  AT$$R1$$A7$$B1 (don't print A-B, Ignore RING B, A answer as Class-2 fax)

If at least one software you are using will recognise the additional
paramter of A B etc after the RING (RING A RING B) then you may use more
than two ringmate numbers. You use $$R2 to print RING A or RING B etc.

Suppose uou want A: for your voice. B: voice/fax software C:BBS
The Voice/fax software will recognise RING B. BBS software will not.
Set your BBS software to answer on 3 or 4 rings (to let other software
do it's thing first if it's not RING D).

  AT$$R2$$A1$$B0$$D4 (print A-B-D, Ignore A, Software takes B, D answers
                       as Data w/full negotiation)
or another setup:
  AT$$R2$$A1$$B3$$D6 (print A-B-D), ignore A, Answer B 2400 negotiate,
                        Answer D class-1 Fax)

$$A,B,C,D modifiers: 0 software decides, 1 telephone/answering machine (no
modem answer), 2-5 data modes (see manual), 6 Class-1 fax, 7 Class-2 fax.

Depending on your needs and software, you'll have to try combos of the
commands to what works for you.
