3-14-94 NO DIALTONE / or w/X0/X1/X3 NO CARRIER

Generally if the software says NO DIALTONE but you hear a dialtone
through the speaker, the modem needs fixing. If you do not hear a dialtone,
plug a phone into the 'phone' jack of the modem to see if the dialtone is
getting to the modem. If you hear dialtone on the phone, AND it is a 1-LINE
phone line, the modem needs fixing. If you have a phone with buttons for
more than one line, then you have the wrong line for the modem. >>> It MUST
be a 'two-wire' single-phone phone line. <<< The 2 'live' wires must be on
the inside two wires in the phone plug.

Each modem is set with certain tolerances to dialtone varitations. In
some places one model modem sees dialtone and another may not. Often in
parts of Europe (& some internal office systems) you need to use X0, X1 or
X3 because the modem does not recognise the Dialtone (so says NO DIALTONE).
This goes in the dial prefix ie; ATX3DT This allows the modem to dial
without 'hearing' dialtone. It also will dial if there IS NO DIALTONE,
because of a wrong adapter or bad connector. Then you will get NO CARRIER
after a pause. Check your adapters and connections.
