Using an XT with FAX & High Speed Modems

While it can't hurt to try, you may be dissapointed running FAX and/or

Voice software in an XT machine. Not only the processor is SLOW, the hard

drive is not usually fast enough to access the files as quickly as needed.

Even some 286 will have trouble, and the ones that do work are quite slow

(my 2nd 'fax sending machine' is a 286, so I know). Older machines are also

more likely to have a BIOS with some problems with serial/comports, or

other things. Also, Dos 3.3 may work better than a later dos which uses

more memory, as memory is often a problem.

High speed modems may also be a problem. I would assume that a 9600 or

14.4 will be OK. However 19.2 to 28K modems may have problems. I'd try

setting 19.2 and &Q6 (buffering but no protocol), or 9600 and &Q0 (direct

connect).

Another problem with older machines is comports. Some refuse to allow

you to 'skip' a port. If the highest is com1 (serial-1), the next MUST be

com2, you can't use com3 or com4.
