In spite of claims on some software, and the apparent fax commands,
the present state of faxmodem/software will not differentiate between
fax/data/voice. Soon there will be ZOOM Faxmodems available with 'RINGMATE'
and there will be software to support it. In the meantime if you have an
'older' Zoom Faxmodem.....

                   Distictive ring / Ringmate

Many areas of the country have this feature, which makes your phone
ring differently (RING or RING-RING) if a person calls you using a
different phone number on the same phone line. Your original number will
RING, the new number will RING-RING (like the old party line). If you tell
people the 2nd number is your FAX number, and set your fax 'rings' to 6 or
8 then you can answer the 1-ring number when it rings, and let the fax
answer when you hear the 2-ring call. It works like this. (if you have 8
rings set in software)

RING (1) RING-RING (2)
RING (2) RING-RING (4)
RING (3) RING-RING (6)
RING (4) RING-RING (8)
RING (5) ^
RING (6) |
RING (7) |
RING (8) <-------------------faxmodem answers on 8th RING

When you hear the 1-ring you will have 7 rings before the fax will
answer, giving you plenty of time to get the phone before the fax. And on
2-ring, you just don't answer at all letting the faxmodem answer.

NOTE>>> This is a workaround, not a replacement for a Faxmodem with
Distinctive Ring feature, because this usually will work ONLY when you are
there to take the voice call. It will NOT usually work with an answering
machine or with fax/data. Sometimes an answering machine see the double-
RING as one-ring and it may work. The NEW Distinctive Ring Zoom Faxmodem
will be able to work with answering-machine\voice/fax/data with up to 3
phone numbers.
