4-7-94 RPI

RPI= Rockwell Protocol Interface. (for the AFC/X,AMC/X,Pocket and some
14.4 modems). There is a V42bis.DRV file on the diskette, and the Software
must recognise RPI for it to Interface that with the modem. Any software
that reconises RPI will have a driver included and/or a place to set the
software protocol in the setup. RPI based modems do not use RTS/CTS (except
14.4 models), it too is RPI controlled. Always set modem speed to 2400
(19,200 for 14.4 models).

>>> If you are having trouble connecting, in any program that uses RPI,
just set the entry of the phone directory to NONE (not to MNP/V42) or turn
off software protocol in the setup to turn off protocol. There is no AT
Command to do it.

Use the standard Hayes init string AT&F&C1&D2 for these modems.

If the program does not support RPI, do NOT set any MNP or V42(bis)
options (or RTS/CTS on the 2400 model modems). It will only work as a plain
modem (Hayes 2400 or 9600).

If you are sending primarily ZIP (compressed) files, V42bis doesn't
help anyway. If you are sending uncompressed documents, spreadheets,
databases, then V42bis will speed transfer. If you can't use one of the
comm programs below, you may be better off with a hardware V42bis model.

There are not very many comm programs that suport RPI for V42bis.
Right now I know of 3. (in order of ease of use).

NOTE: If you need modem-based V42bis the cheapest Zoom modems w/V42bis
are the FCV/FXV (FC9624V FX9624V). They are often available below $150 at
retail or mail order.
