 >>>2. Study of Identical Twins

LOOKING FOR IDENTICAL TWINS FOR CFS MEDICAL RESEARCH STUDY

Do you know anyone with CFS who has an IDENTICAL TWIN without CFS?

The office of Dr. Dedra Buchwald, M.D. (University of Washington
School of Medicine) is considering undertaking a study of the
immunologic, virologic and genetic differences between identical
twins where one twin has CFS and the other does not. If you can
identify such twins who might participate in such a study, please
contact us by any of the following means:

 Postal mail: Dr. Dedra Buchwald
                 Harborview Medical Center
                 325 9th Avenue ZA-60
                 Seattle, WA 98104
                 USA

telephone: 1-206-223-3111 (ask for research assistant Sandy
Oung, or leave a message for Sandy including a
return phone number, and state that you are calling
                 about the "twin study")

 Internet e-mail: gwynne@u.washington.edu

At this point, Dr. Buchwald is only collecting names in an effort to
determine if this study is feasible. Thank you for your anticipated
responses.

 >>>3. USA Policy and Information

   A. ICC Meeting on March 1

The quarterly meeting of the U.S. Interagency Coordinating Committee
(ICC) for CFS will be held on March 1. Although open for public
attendance, testimony from the public will not be accepted at the
March 1 meeting. A spokesman for U.S. Assistant for Health Dr.
Philip Lee (who chairs the ICC meetings) has told CFS-NEWS that four
consultants have been invited to participate in part of the
committee's discussions, specifically: Judy Basso (Minnesota CFS
Assoc.); Marya Grambs (CFIDS Foundation); Kim Kenney (CFIDS Assoc.);
and Orvaline Prewitt (National CFS and Fibromyalgia Assoc.)

The meeting's agenda will include the following topics: the role of
the consultants; agency updates; clinical and research case
definitions; budget reports; draft report to Congress for FY93, and
an action plan; the "Facts About CFS" brochure; and plans for future
meetings.

Regarding testimony from the public, CFS-NEWS has heard that a plan
for accepting testimony once each year will be considered.

The previous quarterly meeting of the ICC, held last Nov. 17, was
reported in CFS-NEWS #27.

[Information provided by the U.S. Federal Register and by the staff
of the U.S. Public Health Service. Thanks to Jesse Lemisch and
Marcella Feinsod for assistance.]

   B. Social Security code established

The Social Security Administration (SSA) has established a separate
identifying code number for CFS as an illness when processing it's
disability applications. The new code number is 688. Bonnie Gorman,
who co-chairs the CFIDS Assoc.'s PPAC group and chairs the medical
committee of the Mass. CFIDS Assoc., comments that this is a helpful
step, however it will be important for the SSA to continue
considering CFS to be entered in the official "listing of
impairments", which step would increase the legitimacy of CFS within
the benefit application process.

[Information provided by the staff of the U.S. Social Security
Administration.]

   C. Ergometry test information

[The following text was issued by the CFS Foundation based at
Greensboro, North Carolina.]

New disability information for all CFS patients and support group
leaders: In the September 1992 CFIDS Chronicle, Doctors Cheney and
Lapp stated in an article: "Bicycle ergometry gas analysis has proven
useful to document disability in CFS and will likely prove useful to
document deep brain dysfunction characteristic of CFS patients. The
CFS Foundation, Inc. has announced a new resource service to assist
you in qualifying for Social Security disability benefits. As you
know, proving has been at best hit or miss, and thousands of CFS
patients would likely have received their benefits had this test been
included in their file. To receive the name of the local medical
facility nearest to you that has the equipment necessary for testing,
(your own physician must order this test), write:

   J. David Shuck, President
   CFS Foundation, Inc.
   10 Wild Partridge Court
   Greensboro, NC 27455

and include your city, state and zip code. In the event you need
this service immediately you may call 1-800-597-4cfs for the
information by phone. Please remember that the toll-free 800
services are for you and the Foundation charges no fee for them.

We ask only reasonable donations for the CFS conferences and
patient/physician-oriented videos tapes. All contributions are tax
deductible and are greatly appreciated.

Even if you have already obtained your disability or Medicare, the
test may prove very effective in enlightening your physician and
others in your area to a better understanding of what CFS does to
brain function.

 >>>4. May 12 February Update

                        February 1994 Update
MAY 12: International CFIDS/ME Awareness Day

The May 12th International CFIDS/ME Awareness Day is now only three
months away and CFIDS/ME groups and individuals continue to plan
activities to mark the event. Because national media outlets plan
their programming months in advance, RESCIND is putting special
emphasis at this time on contacting these outlets. RESCIND asks that
everyone concerned about CFIDS/ME write as many letters as possible
to the national media (see section two, "MAY 12 ACTION"). If the
world is to find out about this serious threat to human health, the
powerful force that is 20th century media must be informed and
educated.

RESCIND, Inc. will continue to issue monthly updates to help keep
everyone up to date on the planning that is going on worldwide for
the event. Patients are urged to distribute these updates at their
local support group so that the greatest number of people can be kept
abreast of the latest MAY 12 planning and get involved. Together, we
will turn the spotlight on CFIDS/ME!

   I. MAY 12 NEWS

In the USA, The CFIDS Buyers Club's Spring 1994 issue of Health
Watch, the group's quarterly newsletter, promotes the MAY 12 event
with a one page article which was recently published in The CFIDS
Chronicle. The Spring 94 Health Watch is already arriving in
mailboxes.

The CFIDS Association of America's Winter 1994 issue of The CFIDS
Chronicle will include an article on page 49 which follows up on the
MAY 12 piece in the Fall 1993 issue. The Winter 94 Chronicle will
detail the names and addresses of prominent U.S. and Canadian
officials that should be contacted for MAY 12. This issue will begin
arriving in mailboxes in March.

The Massachusetts CFIDS Association has designated Giovanna Del Deo
as its MAY 12 coordinator. Ms. Del Deo is organizing a public rally
at the Massachusetts state house. In addition, Catherine Arsenault
of the Saugus (Massachusetts) CFIDS Support Group has proposed that a
large billboard be brought to the state house bearing the photographs
of those stricken with CFIDS. If you would like more information on
the rally at the state house or the billboard project, contact
Giovanna Del Deo at 592 Washington St., Apt. 3, Brookline, MA 02146.

The Connecticut CFIDS Association has moved Connecticut CFIDS
Awareness Week, formerly in March of each year, to the week of May
9-15 to coincide with the MAY 12 event. This fourth annual
Connecticut CFIDS Awareness Week will once again be declared through
a proclamation from the Governor.

In Rhode Island, Jim and Karen Harrington are planning a 5 mile road
race in conjunction with the MAY 12 event on Sunday, May 15 at 10:00
AM. The organizers hope that others will hold similar races around
the world. For more information, contact: Jim Harrington, 31 Sharon
Drive, Coventry, RI 02816.

David Samelman of New York is developing a film about CFIDS called
"Faces of CFIDS" which will be used to promote awareness and raise
money for MAY 12 activities. Participants are asked to shoot a five
to ten minute video of themselves relating their CFIDS/ME story. For
more information, contact David Samelman at 9 Wesleyan Court,
Smithtown, NY 11787-3011.

In Canada, The Barrie ME Support Group will be distributing letters
to be signed by individuals and separately posted to government
officials. The group is also considering setting up booths on May
12th in shopping centers in the Barrie area. For more information
contact: Mr. Albert Blom, President, The Barrie ME Support Group, 33
Doris Drive, Barrie, Ontario L4N 5W2 Telephone 1-705-728-7133.

The Manitoba Chapter of ME Canada will be drafting a letter for MAY
12 and distributing it to its members so that they can individually
send it to Canadian officials. The group is also looking into
setting up ME information booths in their area. For more information
contact: Frank Fowler, 35 Pine Bluff Road, Winnipeg, MB R2J 2N6
Canada; telephone/Fax 1-204-257-2624 or Joan Curran, 97 Haig Ave.,
Winnipeg, MB R2M 0E2, telephone 1-204-237-8038.

Lucie Dorais, a CFIDS/ME patient from Ottawa, Canada, is developing
MAY 12 ACTION software for IBM/compatible computers which will not
only offer background text and graphics on the event, but will also
allow for the automation of letter writing to prominent officials. An
update on the completion and availability of this software will be
announced in an upcoming MAY 12 update from RESCIND.

   II. MAY 12 ACTION

This month RESCIND is asking patients to write to the NATIONAL media
in their country to request that news stories be prepared to be run
on or around May 12, 1994. The national media usually take a long
time to develop a story, so it will be effective to have many people
writing in to prompt them about this early on. In March and April,
RESCIND will be asking people to write to their local newspapers, TV
and radio about preparing news stories for MAY 12.

Please write to as many of the offices listed below as you can over
the next month or so. Also, please go out of your way to enlist the
help of your friends and family to also write to the media (and to
public officials on May 12).

     Talking Points

You might include the following suggested ideas in your letters to
the media:

   - May 12 is International Awareness Day for chronic fatigue and
immune dysfunction syndrome (CFIDS) [OR myalgic
encephalomyelitis (M.E.)]. The 12th of May is the birthday of
Florence Nightingale, who for several decades had an undiagnosed
illness very similar to (or perhaps the same as) the disease today
   known as CFIDS [or M.E.].

   - most other national media are being asked to run a story on
CFIDS/ME on May 12, and we hope you will too.

   - the importance of this illness is shown in part by continued
medical research by the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH)
as well as research at Harvard, Prince Henry Hospital, the
University of Glasgow and other renowned medical institutions.

   - The U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs has recently declared Chronic
Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) as the legitimate disability code for
soldiers who have contracted Gulf War syndrome.

   - CFIDS/ME is an emerging illness. Other illnesses such as polio
and multiple sclerosis took several decades to gain public
acceptance as legitimate diseases. Hopefully in this day of rapid
modern communications, this process will take a much briefer time
   for CFIDS/ME.

   - CFIDS/ME will show a wide spectrum of severity. Most patients
are in great pain, and many are completely disabled. Although
CFIDS/ME is not usually life-threatening, many physicians who
treat CFIDS/ME patients in addition to those who have AIDS or
multiple sclerosis state that CFIDS/ME is often more debilitating
and disabling than those other illnesses during the course of the
   illness.

   - The fact that children are contracting this disabling illness
will have a deleterious effect on the economy since they may never
   become income-earning tax-payers.

   - [mention the worst aspects of how CFIDS/ME affects your life or
that of someone you care about]

 >>>5. March is USA CFS Awareness Month

The (USA) National CFS and Fibromyalgia Association based in Kansas

 >>>6. L.A. Quake Aid

[The text below was summarized from an article written by John
Friedlich (Vice Pres. of the Massachusetts CFIDS Assoc.) and which
appeared on the CFS Newswire service (about which, see CFS-NEWS #23).
Thanks to Maryka Ford for assistance.]

The earthquake in Los Angeles has drastically affected the lives of
all the city's residents, but few as profoundly as the disabled. Some
2,000 PWCs there have been affected and many are totally on their
own, struggling without any of their usual support systems. So many
support group leaders have had to relocate that there has been no way
for many members to contact their groups and many of the locations of
their meetings have been destroyed or closed.

Volunteers have established a toll-free information line to help
callers from the affected area access desperately needed services.
The number is 800/KO-CFIDS (800/562-3437).

Please support an effort to help PWCs living in this devastated area
regain control of their lives with your earmarked donations. Send
your contribution to: PWC Quake Aid, PO Box 220398, Charlotte, NC
28222-0398. 100% of the donations earmarked "PWC Quake Aid" will be
immediately forwarded on to the local volunteers. (While The CFIDS
Association of America, Inc. has so generously agreed to accept and
forward donations, this effort in fact should not be considered to be
affiliated to any specific organizations.)
