- Schedule

Eastern Conference teams will play five games against each of six
divisional opponents (30); four games against each of the seven teams in
the conference's other division (28) and two games against each of the 12
Western Conference members (24).

Western Conference teams will play six games against each of five
divisional opponents (30); four games against each of the six teams in the
conference's other division (24) and two games against each of the 14
Eastern Conference clubs (28).

Playoffs: The system will be conference-based, with the No. 1 team
meeting the No. 8 team in the first round, No. 2 vs. No. 7, No. 3 vs. No.
6 and No. 4 vs. No. 5. Matchups will be based on overall points with the
four division champions being placed in the first- or second-place seeds
in each conference and being assured of home-ice in the first two playoff
rounds. All series will be best of seven (2-2-1-1-1 rotation) except
matchups between Central and Pacific teams. Those series will rotate 2-3-
2 to reduce travel. In those cases, the team with the most regular-season
points will choose whether to start the series at home or away.

1994-95 neutral site games will take place in: Portland, Oregon; Denver,
Colorado; Las Vegas, Nevada; San Antonio, Texas; Phoenix, Arizona;
Halifax, Nova Scotia; Hamilton, Ontario; and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
Dec 13: New York Rangers vs. New York Islanders, Portland, Oregon
Dec 21: Vancouver Canucks vs. San Jose Sharks, Portland, Oregon

and allows you to make a variety of queries about it. You can list the
schedule for given dates or teams, or list upcoming games between teams

County leaders have paved the way for construction to begin on a permanent
home for the Tampa Bay Lightning. The last chunk of the $112 million-plus
project fell into place when Hillsborough county commissioners approved a
30-year contract, agreeing to put $3.5 million a year toward retiring the
debt for the hockey arena. Although supportive of the arena deal,
Hillsborough commissioners were hesitant to approve it until the Lightning
agreed to pay stiff financial penalties if the team breaks its 30-year
lease during the first 15 years. The contract also calls for the state to
contribute $2 million a year and the city to guarantee $1 million in
parking revenue annually for 30 years. The 20,500-seat arena will be
designed to host basketball, too, in hopes that the city eventually will
land a pro team. Lightning governor David LeFevre said excavation at the
downtown site along Garrison Channel would begin within a few days with a
projected opening in October 1995.

The annual meeting of Maple Leaf Gardens was put on hold Tuesday, August
9, to give lawyers time to debate a controversial takeover attempt by
millionaire grocer Steve Stavro. Lawyers decided in court that the meeting
would be postponed until Monday, August, 15, at 4 p.m. The court case has
generated interest in normally placid Gardens shares. They closed up $2.50
to $47.50 in light trading Tuesday, after hitting the $50 a share mark
earlier in the day. The court battle was prompted by Ontario's public
trustee who wants to stop the sale of the venerable Gardens to Stavro, an
executor of the estate of former Gardens owner Harold Ballard. Trustee
lawyers have said that would make Stavro both a bidder and a seller. The
trustee says Stavro was in a conflict-of-interest position when he bought
a 60 percent block of shares from the Gardens' estate for $34 a share, or
$75 million.

- League news:

Draft:
The 1995 draft will be held in Winnipeg. The 1996 draft will be held in
St. Louis.

The NHL adopted a lottery for its annual entry draft, beginning with the
1995 draft.
A complicated system ensures that the team with the fewest points ends
up with a 30 percent chance of getting the first overall pick and is
guaranteed of picking no lower than second. Whatever team is drawn can
move up by no more than four positions in the draft. Therefore, only the
five worst teams have a chance at picking first. If one of the second-,
third-, fourth- or fifth-worst teams win the draw to pick first, the last-
place team will pick second.
If the sixth-worst team is drawn first, it moves up four places and
picks second. The first pick would then go to the worst team. Likewise,
if the 10th-worst team is drawn first, it would pick sixth. The first
pick, again, would go to the worst team.
Under the weighted-draw system for non-playoff teams only, the team with
the fewest points has a 30 percent chance of being drawn; the team with
the second-fewest has a 21 percent chance; and the team with the third-
fewest points has a 15.1 percent chance. The team with the fourth-fewest
points has a 10.9 percent chance; the team with the fifth-fewest points
has an 8 percent chance; the team with the sixth-fewest points has a 5.9
percent chance; and the team with the seventh-fewest points has a 4.2
percent chance. The team with the eighth-fewest points has a 2.8 percent
chance; the team with the ninth-fewest points has a 1.6 percent chance;
and the team with 10th-fewest points has a 0.5 percent chance.
Only one team will be drawn and placed in the appropriate spot.
Everybody else picks in reverse order of the team's finish.

League Leadership:
Gary Bettman is commissioner of the National Hockey League.
Former Hartford Whalers President and General Manager Brian Burke is the
league's executive vice president and director of hockey operations.

Rule changes:
Gary Bettman revealed that the NHL had set up a ten member committee to
study the possibility using a shootout in the regular season to decide
tied games. Members of the committee are Bill Torrey of the Florida
Panthers, Phil Esposito of the Tampa Bay Lightning, Harry Sinden of the
Boston Bruins, Jimmy Devellano of the Detroit Red Wings, Marcel Aubut of
the Quebec Nordiques, Cliff Fletcher of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Michael
Eisner of the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, Barry Shenkarow of the Winnipeg Jets,
Stephen Walsh of the New York Islanders and Howard Baldwin of the
Pittsburgh Penguins.

Olympics:
The NHL's goal of having its stars participate in the 1998 Winter Olympics
moved one step forward Thursday, July 28, when the league and the
International Ice Hockey Federation announced they had forged an agreement
on issues dealing with international play. But before certain NHL players
can play for Olympic gold, the league and IIHF still must get the approval
of the International Olympic Committee, the various national Olympic
committees and the NHL Players Association. The agreement, forged between
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and IIHF president Rene Fasel, also calls
for the development of a European Super league, the continuation of the
Canada Cup and the NHL's participation in the world championships until at
least 1997. The Canada Cup, an international round robin held every three
or four years, will likely continue under a new name, probably the World
Cup. The NHL also agreed to pay an annual fee to the IIHF to support the
development of hockey outside North America. The IIHF will distribute
these funds to its member federations in return for its permission to
allow players to move to the NHL. This would replace transfer payments now
paid directly from an NHL club to the European club losing a player. After
1997, the NHL and IIHF will seek alternative formats for the world
championships.

NHLPA:
Mike Gartner of the New York Rangers is the new president of the
National Hockey League Players' Association.

The Supreme Court of Canada on Thursday, July 28, refused to hear an
appeal of a lower court's ruling that requires the NHL to put $32.6
million back into the pension fund for players who retired before 1982. In
losing its final bid to challenge the earlier ruling, the NHL also was
ordered to pay the legal fees incurred by the players in arguing against
the application to appeal to the Supreme Court. In February, the Ontario
Court of Appeal upheld a lower court's decision that the NHL had
misappropriated money that belonged to players.

The NHL Players Association has drawn up a tough agent certification
program, a copy of which has been obtained by The Canadian Press. It
defines conflicts of interest, prevents agents from representing anyone
other than players and gives the association the right to revoke an
agent's licence.

Former hockey leader Alan Eagleson is wanted in the United States to face
fraud, racketeering and embezzlement charges. U.S. district attorney Paul
Kelly said a request to extradite the former executive director of the NHL
Players Association and Hockey Canada's international negotiator will be
filed within 60 days. Additional charges also may be added to the 32-count
indictment brought by a grand jury March 3.

Officiating:
National Hockey League on-ice officials agreed to a four-year contract,
ending the first strike by referees and linesmen in league history.
Members of the NHL Officials Association voted in a telephone poll
conducted by counsel Don Meehan Wednesday, December 1. The new agreement
covers this year and the next three seasons. A first-year referee made
$50,000 a season and a first-year linesman made $33,000 a season under the
old contract, which expired Aug. 31. Terms of the agreement were not
disclosed, but it is believed the officials agreed to a 29 per cent
increase for referees and a 65 per cent total hike over the life of the
contract.

Miscellaneous:
The Hockey Hall of Fame added Yves Fortier, Bob Goodenow, Bill Hay, J.
Bruce Pope, Harry Sinden, Steve Solomon and Murray Costello to the board
of directors.
