You can force IPlay to work with over 512k by setting ISetup to 1024k so
eventhough some samples may get chopped off from the missing GUS memory
when loading up a >500k mod. CapaMOD has no such memory checking
restriction.

I upgraded my vanilla GUS to 1024k (from 512k) for $26 using standard
DRAM and now everything works. 512k wasn't too bad but 1024k is better...

Well There's always hornet.eng.ufl.edu FTP site for music/demo

flooding my home dir, especially since SZ isn't properly working for me ;)

Downgrade to ST3.01, 3.2 is way too buggy to be half-productive. At

Just for the record... I have both a GUS and an SBPro in my machine. My
GUS is at port 250, IRQ 5, DMA 7 and my Sound Bastard Pro is at 220, IRQ
7, DMA 1.

The only problem I've ever had is when I tried to install the GUS for the
first time I just couldn't get it to initialize. So I took out my SBPro
and installed the GUS by itself first. When I got it working right
(which was easy at that point) I put the SBPro back in and havn't had any
conflict related problems since. I've even used the SBPro with the GUS
emulating the Sound Canvas on a number of games including Lands Of Lore
and TIE Fighter. I kept the SBPro because, we all know, the GUS emulation
for SB sux..

Nice to hear. I'm thinking of getting a GUS to go along with my Turtle
Beach Maui and my SB16. Anyone know appwoxiamately how much a GUS would
cost, and also the 768K of Dram?

I used to use a SBP. I found it waaay too noisy. Heck, I could tell when
my hard disk was accessing or the video changing just by listening to my
speakers. But to your point, yes, you could make a second card coexist
*usually*. As I said a while ago, the fun begins when you start adding
stuff like a CD-ROM and a scanner or you use a SB-16 (which uses two DMA
channels) and SCSI drive controllers that also need a DMA and an IRQ.
Then the juggling act begins.

How true. My GUS MAX installed like a champ. I had to go three different
motherboards though to find one with an active NMI so that megaem and
sbos would work. I still avoid using these software drivers whenever
possible. Sbos doesn't work half the time, and when it does, it sounds
awful. I have yet to find a fairly new game that works with megaem (Doom,
Doom2, Heretic, ROTT etc.) luckily they support the GUS directly and
sound pretty decent. Let's face it. The GUS excells at playing mods.
Everything else that it does is so-so.

It is because Iplay loads all of the samples into the cards RAM and
sends commands to the GUS as what sample to play when while CapaMOD
(i believe) is ablke to swap samples in and out of the 512k as they
are needed in realtime... this ussually creates 'ultraclicks' but
there are ways around them....

It comes with 512k upgradable to 1Meg. Way too small IMHO. As far as MIDI
playing, on a scale of 1-10 where a Turtle Beach Multisound or a Roland
Sound Canvas is a 10, I would rate it a 5. I would rate the AWE-32 a 7.
These numbers are my opinion based on personal experience with the cards
mentioned.

CapaMOD just ignores any possibility that you may be out of GUS ram..
that's all. It just doesn't do any checking.

The AWE32 is just a GUS wanna be, look at the specs, exactly the same as

Interesting. The only time I got UltraClicks (tm) with my GUS MAX was
when I turned up the mixer volume too much higher than 0 dB. If I keep
the setting at 0 to 3 dB I (so far) do not get the problem. The clicks
are there whether I use Iplay or CappaMOD (with the mixer cranked up).

Why. A lot of GUS owners flame the AWE-32. Generally, they give the same
reason you do. I own an AWE-32 and a GUS MAX. Believe me, except for the
GUS's mod playing, (the AWE-32 has only one *native* player at the
moment), the AWE-32 runs rings around the GUS. Now, just because you
"hate" Creative is no reason to disregard the technical merits of the
AWE-32.

Just try ULTRINIT -?
That will give you a list of all available switches.

I hate 'em too, and I'll tell you why.. I can't remember EXACTLY what
they did, but it was something to the effect of. They started writing
into their drivers (released to other software companies) the ability for
the driver to recognise a sound card that was a cloan or 'compatible'. If
so, the driver wouldn't work. Talk about bad business practices. Creative
Losers (my nickname for them) also tried to collect royalties for EVERY
soundcard that claimed compatibility w/ sound bastard cards. What a bunch
of assholes.

I think the single biggest problem with the GUS is it NEEDs more RAM.
Give it, like, 2 SIMM slots with the ability to read 2 16MB SIMMS and
you've got a sound card that can access 32MB. That would be cool.
