                              ===[ Welcome! ]===

Search and Destroy is a vast improvement on the many Battleship-type door
games currently out there. It features a friendly, full-color, full-screen
interface and arcade-style control. This file will help you get SAD up and
running on your BBS; read USER.DOC to learn about playing the game.

Please consider registering this game. SAD is a high-quality online game,
and you can add the registered version to your board for the very low cost
of five dollars. SAD is simple enough so that your callers will be able
to enjoy it without having to spend much time learning how to play, yet
it is featured enough to keep their interest.

SAD should be able to run on nearly any MS-DOS system, although a color
display and high-speed modem are recommended. SAD requires that the remote
have ANSI capability (preferably color), and the frequent screen updates make
it highly desirable to play on a connection of at least 9600bps. However, SAD
is baud-rate aware and will adjust its output according to connect speed for
optimal performance.

                             ===[ Features ]===

o Assembly language serial I/O
o Supports speeds up to 115.2k and 16550 UARTs
o Internal ANSI emulation
o Internal maintenance
o Multitasker aware (DESQview, Windows, OS/2)
o FOSSIL support (FOSSIL not required however)
o Split-screen chat with word wrap
o Multi-node compatible

                          ===[ Multinode Usage ]===

SAD is currently not a multi-player door. If a user attempts to play SAD
when another user is already playing, he will be informed of this and
brought back to the BBS. Real-time multinode play is a possibility
for a future version of SAD.

In the event of a system crash while SAD is in use, the door will not be
able to clean up as usual; an abrupt termination of the game will cause
the SAD.USE semaphore to not be deleted, thus preventing anyone from playing
the game. Please be sure to delete this manually in such a situation.

                            ===[ Sysop Keys ]===

While a user is playing SAD, the following functions are available to the
local Sysop:

 [F1] - Toggles status/help display.
 [F2] - Activates chat mode. Hit ESC to exit chat.
 [F3] - Drops the local end to DOS, and displays an appropriate message
        to the user.
 [F4] - Kicks the user out of the door and back to the BBS.
[F10] - Kicks the user out of the door and drops carrier.

                            ===[ Maintenance ]===

SAD does not require that you run a maintenance utility in your daily events;
it automatically performs maintenance when the first user of the day enters
the game. During maintenance, all players in all games have their number of
turns left for the day reset; this value is Sysop-controllable. In the SAD
directory, type "TURNS x" to allow x (1-32767) turns per day. If no valid
value is set by the Sysop, the game defaults to 200 turns per day.

In the registered version of the game, there is no practical limit to
the number of games that can be active. Although when a game is finished it
is automatically deleted, it may be desirable to delete a game in progress;
to do this, run SAD as you normally would, but with the additional command
line parameter SYSOP. The built-in Sysop utility also functions as a door and
can be run remotely. In the unregistered version, there is a limit
of two games active at one time.
