               LANARK COUNTY Genealogical SOCIETY NEWSLETTER
                               MARCH 1995 #3

The regular meeting of the Lanark County Genealogical Society was
held on Saturday, March 4, 1995 at the Family Research Centre at
the Church of Latter Day Saints on the North Gower Road, Smiths
Falls.

The meeting opened at 1pm and the President Marilyn Snedden
welcomed all the participants.

Members attending included: Cecil Buck, Walter Brown, John F.
Belisle, Christina Currie, Marion Cavanagh, Jim Carter, Georgina
J. Doe, Gordon Darly, Gary Darly, Helen Gillan, Jean Hossie,

of $117.88 with a bank balance of $2795.06. Moved by Bob
Sargeant and seconded by Irma Willoughby that the Treasurer's
report be accepted. Motion passed.

Moved by Mildred Livingston and seconded by Ernie Miller that a
donation of $25.00 be given to the Family History Centre. Motion
passed.

The British Isles Family History Society of Greater Ottawa will
be hosting George Bushells, author and lecturer, at 10am on
Saturday, March 11, 1995 at the Family History Centre on Prince
of Wales Drive, Ottawa.

Marilyn Snedden read some letters of appreciation from members
who have received replies from LCGS. Those members are to be
congratulated who have taken the time to answer these inquiries.

President Marilyn Snedden has received the original of the
Pakenham Anglican Cemetery which had been sent to Ottawa OGS in
1989. It was decided to attempt our first publication so that
the records be made available. Moved by Helen Gillan and
seconded by Alice Hughes that the LCGS should attempt to publish
Clayton and St. Marks Cemeteries if these can be completed for
less than $250.00.

Moved by Eric Knudsen and seconded by Lynda Moulton that the LCGS
purchase a table ($15.00) at Gene-o-rama so that we can show our
presence at this Region 8 endeavour.

The President advised that the packet for new members is
available for distribution; the cost of mailing these packets
will be $.64.

Alice Hughes reported that the library has received copies of
genealogies for the Kilfoyle family. Thanks for the donation, it
was much appreciated!

It was agreed to forego our May meeting as the OGS Region 8
meeting in Brockville will be held on the same week.

We were advised that due to government cutbacks at Statistics
Canada, it has been decided to eliminate listing the heads of
households and only produce an agricultural census. We will
await OGS's position on this issue.

The Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid is available on the Certa Cito
bulletin board, as well as all published cemetery records from
the Kingston and Ottawa OGS branches.

Walter Brown then gave a presentation on the Family History
Centre. It is hoped that the on-line access will soon be
operational. It is anticipated that the Centre will be open by
appointment only. Walter then introduced Peter Day who is in
charge of microfilming birth, marriage and death records as they
become available. This is a tremendous task but is progressing
with amazing speed throughout the world. Peter informed us that
numerous records are becoming available from Russia, China and
other previously "closed" countries, as well as records from the
Church of Scotland. This was a most interesting talk, everyone
appreciated the time and efforts on behalf of Peter and Walter.
Thank you.

Meeting was adjourned at 3pm.

We've had a few letters from members mentioning that they hadn't
received their December 1994 newsletter as yet. Please take note
that we did not publish a newsletter that month, as a rule we
skip the month of December as we do not hold a January meeting.
Just so you don't think that Canada Post has been remiss in their
deliveries!

                                   FAMILY HISTORY CENTRES

Family History Centres operate as branch libraries of the
main library in Salt Lake City. Nearly everything available there
that has been microfilmed is available here through interlibrary
loan on a short term basis (3 weeks) or on a longer basis (6
months). Patrons can even request that some records there, not
already filmed, be filmed (original documents are never loaned).
Although each Family History Centre strives to obtain local
material, the main resources are filmed (or computerized)
materials, either kept locally or ordered in from Salt Lake City.
Everything on CD disk is also kept on microfiche because
most branches can afford only one computer, but usually have many
microfiche readers. This allows a larger number of people to
access the same material, albeit more slowly with microfiche.
The "Family Search" programme contains all the resources
held on CD disks by the church. This includes the International
Genealogical Index (IGI), the Family History Library index (FHL),
the Ancestral File (AF), the Social Security Index, and the U.S.
Military Index.
The IGI is a database of over 200 million names submitted by
members of the Latter-day Saint church, listed alphabetically by
name and geographical location. The major portion of these names
originate from Britain, Germany, and United States.
The FHL catalog lists and describes all the materials held
by the main library at Salt Lake City. The catalog includes
census records, birth records, family histories, church
registers, land records, probate records, and many other record
types.
The AF is a database of over 25 million names, submitted by
members and non-members alike, of their pedigrees, some very
extensive. Generally each name on a pedigree chart will have a
family group chart with that person listed as either a child
and/or parent. Everyone is encouraged to submit their pedigree to
the Ancestral File in a mutual effort to help each other extend
their family lines.
The Social Security Death index is an index of over 39
million deceased Americans who had social security numbers. The
index mainly covers deaths between 1962 and the end of 1988, but
some records are as early as 1937. These records generally list
birth and death dates, as well as the person's last place of
residence.
The Military Index lists individuals in the U.S. miliary who
died or were declared dead in Korea or Vietnam from 1950 to 1975.
The index indicates birth and death dates, as well as place of
last residence.

The main use to which FHC's are being put is to read film
which has been ordered from Salt Lake City. These are mainly
films of parish registers from England and Scotland, as well as
many European countries, because a very high percentage of these
parishes have been filmed. Smiths Falls will take many years
before it has any amount of permanent holdings, but it is
recommended that genealogists go to Ottawa and Kingston where
both have indexes to the vital records of England. Ottawa also
has indexes to the Church of Scotland registers, as well as a
rewarding amount of Irish material. Ottawa also has a copy of the
vital records of Ontario.

Information on FHC CD disks ("Family Search") can be
downloaded to your own floppy disks or printed out on paper for
your convenience (to obviate copying everything out by hand).
However, you must have the Personal Ancestral File (PAF)
programme on your computer at home to read the disks. This
software (Version 2.31) can be obtained for $35 American by
calling 1-800-537-5950 and using your Visa or Mastercard. Or you
may write the Salt Lake Distribution Center, 1999 West 1700
South, Salt Lake City, Utah 84104, giving your floppy specs (e.g.
3.5" 2HD) and computer model (e.g. IBM compatible 386). I do not
know whether a Windows version exists. You might ask if you're
interested.

The Smiths Falls Family History Centre now has a computer
and will be opened by appointment by calling Walter Brown at 283-
8382. However, we will not have public hours until we have
trained some librarians and got everything organized. Our
intention, initially, is to open one day a week for 10-12 hours
(e.g. 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.), probably on a Thursday. However, due to
our limited facilities, we will open by appointment at other
times for individuals or groups.

                         LOGGING ON TO CERTA CITO

Following is a typical session for a first time caller. What you
see here is what will appear on your screen after the modems have
connected. My responses to questions will be in BOLD print. I
will also enclose further explanations in square brackets and
italics, like this [this is a further explanation]. Our
hypothetical caller's name is John Smith, you will use your name.
Now, you have called Certa Cito and the modems have connected -
here we go...

Welcome to Certa Cito
First on line November 1, 1988

Enter your first and last names: JOHN SMITH
Calling from (City, Province)? Perth, Ontario

Certa Cito Welcomes JOHN SMITH
Calling From PERTH, ONTARIO
Is this correct? Y

[Certa Cito wants to make certain you have entered your name and
calling location correctly. If you mis-typed something you may
respond with N and Certa Cito will ask again for your name and
location.]

Enter letter of your terminal, <CR> if not listed: F

[Certa Cito is listing several common terminal types. By far the
most common is the IBM compatible (XT, AT, 286, 386, 486 based
machines), so we respond with an F.]

Terminal Profile Set to:
ANSI codes Allowed
IBM Graphics Allowed
Upper/Lower Case
Line Feeds Needed
0 Nulls after each <CR>
Do you wish to modify this? N
Do you wish to have a pause after each display page(normally
yes)? Y
How many lines per Display page (normally 24)? 24

[Certa Cito knows about the IBM terminal type, it is only under
exceptional conditions we would want to modify any of this. Most
computer screens can print 80 characters on a line with 24 lines
on a single screen. Information comes in much faster than you
can read, so we tell Certa Cito to pause its display every 24
lines. It will show the word <Stop> at the end of each screen.
Press the letter S if you want to abort the display, any other
key for the next screen of information.]
Please Enter a 1-8 character Password to be used for future
logons. This password may have any printable characters you
wish. Lower case is considered different from upper case and
imbedded blanks are legal. REMEMBER THIS PASSWORD. You will
need it to log on again.

Your password? NUTS
Re-enter New password to verify: NUTS

[Choose any password you like. John Smith chose NUTS, not a
password I would recommend. Occasionally, "line noise" causes
spurious characters to appear while you are entering the
password, so you are asked to re-type it as confirmation that the
password is as you want it.]

Thank you for calling Certa Cito.

NO CARRIER

[The important thing to remember is that there is nothing you can
do that will "hurt" either your system or Certa Cito - feel
completely free to experiment and poke around in all the little
nooks and crannies of the bulletin board. One caveate, I do not
suggest that you alter much in a section called "<R>ecofigure
your terminal". This could cause your display on line to become
unreadable if set incorrectly.]
