This program will measure your typing speed.

To start up, double click on TYPTUTOR.PRG from the desktop, or you
could run it from inside any other program. You will be presented with
a file selector to choose the text file you'd like to be tested on. I
I have it default to files with the extension 'TYP' although any text
file could be used. You must make sure, however, that the text file
doesn't contain any strange characters, besides the standard
punctuation (including all the characters located above the numbers
on your keyboard). Once you select the file, you have a couple of
seconds to get ready, then the first line appears at the top of your
screen. You must type the letter which is directly above the cursor.
Failure to do so will result in an error, which is represented with an
inverse video letter. If you skip a letter instead of just mistyping
one, you will still have to type the letter which is above your
cursor.

Once the test is finished, a screen will tell you the number of words
you typed (which is calculated by a standard of 5 character per word),
the number of errors, and the time it took you. Then your words per
minute is calculated. I then subtract the number of errors from the
words per minute to give you a 'real' sense of your typing skills (you
could hold a key down and type 400 wpm if your repeat rate is fast
enough). I have also included a 'high score' type thing.

A few hints in creating your own text files. You must use a standard
text editor, instead of a word processor (unless your word processor
will support standard text files). Word processors will put character
codes in the beginning of the files for things such as margins, and
pitch, etc. Make sure the line of text isn't greater than 80 columns.
Each line must end in a carriage return (instead of a wrap around line
feed). Some editors, such as the one in Flash (which I'm using now)
will automatically word wrap, and put a carriage return at the end of
the line. The line shouldn't begin or end with a space. I don't let
you type a space at the beginning of a sentance, and you could never
tell if a line ends in a space or not. I haven't found a problem with
excessive carriage returns, the program will just skip over them.
Once you're done creating the text file, save it with an extender of
'TYP'.

Some miscellaneous features which i've included: When selecting a
file, you can CANCEL the selection and the program will terminate.

While taking the test, you can exit by pressing UNDO. This will bring
up the screen with your stats. The numbers calculated don't affect
the 'high score' numbers. You must finish the test for this to
happen. Once UNDO has been pressed, press RETURN to terminate the
program, or any other key to restart the test and pick a new file if
you choose.

Well, that's it. Please tell me some improvements or bugs that you
find (it's a fairly simple program, and I've debugged it very well).

If you upload this program anywhere (which I would greatly appreciate)
please include this text file.
