ABOUT PAPERDIRECT
PaperDirect offers (via mail-order only) a wide variety of
laserprinter/photocopier compatable products, targeted
specifically at the home-based Desktop Publishing market. Besides
the requisite white and colored papers, Avery labels, report
covers and presentation products, PaperDirect offers many products
with pre-printed, artistic designs. Included amongst those are
designs for letterheads, certificates, business cards, tri-fold
brochures, envelopes and much more.

PaperDirect offers a PaperKit for $19.95 (refundable with your
first order) that contains a sample of almost every paper product
they offer. I have put my PaperKit samples into clear sheet
protectors, and they virtually fill a 3-inch thick, 3-ring binder!
Whether you just dabble in DTP, or do it on a professional level,
your money will be well spent.

ABOUT MY UPLOADS
The templates are Calamus 1.09N .CDK files, grouped in folders
named according to PaperDirect's catalog, i.e. the 'LETRHEDS'
folder contains templates for PaperDirect's pre-printed
'Letterhead' papers. Since I'm not sure what File #'s will be
assigned to which uploads, the following is a complete list of all
FOLDERS that I will be uploading RSN <REALLY> but, not necessarily
in this order:

#xxxxx BROCHURS (Brochures, tri-fold)
#xxxxx BUSCARDS (Business cards)
#28402 CERTIFS (Certificates)
#28403 FRAMES (Frames/borders)
#xxxxx KIDS (Kids designs)
#28404 LETRHEDS (Letterheads)
#xxxxx MAILPLUS (Mailers Plus, tri-fold w/rolodex-card)
#28405 MESSAGES (FYI, NEWS, UPDATE, etc.)
#xxxxx PSTCARDS (Post cards)
#xxxxx THEMES (Designs for special occassions)

Each folder will contain this file (or a revision of it), several
.CDK files (templates), and possibly an additional .TXT file
explaining particulars about the .CDK's in the folder. Because
some templates incorporate PD fonts (d/l'ed from GEnie) which you
may not have, those fonts will be included in the FOLDER
containing the template that uses them.

IMPORTANT NOTE 1: In naming the templates themselves, I had to
make a choice between using PaperDirect's design names, or their
stock numbers. Since I feel that it is easier to recognize a
particular design by its name, I opted for that method. However,
this creates a problem in that a Letterhead of a particular
design has the same name as a tri-fold Brochure of the same
design. If you want to keep all templates of the same design in
one, coordinated group, i.e. all PWRPOINT templates, rename the
individual PWRPOINT templates to your liking (I use LETRHEAD,
TRIFOLD, BUSCARD, etc.) and put them in a folder named PWRPOINT.

IMPORTANT NOTE 2: Why not combine all templates of a similar
design into one, large .CDK? Because a Letterhead template has a
Portrait orientation, while a tri-fold Brochure template has a
Landscape orientation. The two orientations simply don't mix.

THE TEMPLATES
I designed the templates using a MEGA ST4, SM124, Calamus 1.09N
and an SLM804 Laserprinter. Although Calamus SL can 'load' 1.09N
files, it is my understanding that SL's measurement system is
somewhat different and may cause minor discrepancies to occur.
Therefore, I can offer no assurances that these templates will be
accurate when used with SL and I apologize for that in advance.

Each template accurately represents its respective PaperDirect
namesake. The various levels of raster indicate how my own eyes
perceived the different colors of the pre-printed designs, but
only in terms of their brightness relative to black/white. I have
made no attempt to maintain raster-to-color integrity across the
full spectrum of templates. Therefore, although all frames having
a 20% raster on one template design indicates that they are all
the same color on PaperDirect's product, a 20% raster on a
different template design would not necessarily represent that
same color. Sorry but, it's the best I could do without SL.

Some of PaperDirect's papers are pre-printed on both sides, thus
their corresponding templates are two-page .CDK's. While some of
the template's graphic elements are not exact visual duplicates of
PaperDirect's designs, their size and location are accurate to
finest degree possible with 1.09N. All of the frames comprising
each page of each template have been grouped together and
protected.

MEASUREMENT SETTINGS
Since the typesetting/printing industry use picas/points as a
measurement scale, the templates were designed with Calamus' PAGE
LAYOUT 'Measurement' set to 'Pica' and 'Font Size' set to
'Points'. While there may not be any alignment problem if you use
other settings, those are the industry's standards and I highly
recommend using them. If you are not familiar with points/picas:

1 point = 1/12 pica = 1/72 inch
12 points = 1 pica = 1/6 inch
72 points = 6 picas = 1 inch

NOTE: Be aware that Calamus 1.09N's 'X-Y coordinate' system
displays whole picas, tenths of picas and hundredths of picas. The
rulers are graduated in whole picas and tenths of picas. This can
be confusing since one pica contains 12 points, not ten. For
example: 10.50 picas equals 126 points. Not 125.00 points, nor
120.50 points. (10.50 picas times 12 points per pica = 126 points)

To insure the utmost accuracy, the size and placement of each pre-
printed element were first measured, then calculated according to
the size and placement of every other element and the overall size
of the paper, then sized and placed using Calamus' 'X-Y co-
ordinate' system. The final placement of all elements was checked
with the screen display set 'User Selectable', 'Printer 1:1 @
375%', which is the exact-scale setting for Atari's laserprinter.

PRINTING YOUR WORK
As these templates are not intended to be printed as part of your
work, you will have to do something to prevent them from being
printed along with your work. This is easily accomplished in one
of two ways.

1. Unprotect and delete the template(s).
2. Unprotect and cut the template(s) to the frame-clipboard.

Because it would be virtually impossible to allow for all the
various minimum margin values, page-offset values and/or paper-
feeding characteristics of the numerous printers available, do not
expect to design anything using these templates and then print it
on your particular printer with everything properly positioned on
the paper. (I.E., an individual frame with an upper-left corner
'X-Y' co-ordinate of 12.00 and 12.00 picas will not necessarily be
printed by your particular printer at 12.00 picas down and 12.00
picas over from the upper-left corner of the paper.) However, each
frame will be properly positioned relative to every other frame,
and to the overall page.

If you are only producing camera-ready-copy (CRC) to be used by a
print-shop, any mis-alignment of the whole page is not a problem
because the print-shop will take care of it (hopefully). If you
are using your own printer to print directly onto PaperDirect's
products, use the 'Select all' and 'Group' functions to group all
of your own frames together. Then reposition the grouped frame to
correct any mis-alignment.

A PROPOSITION
As noted previously, these templates were designed with a MEGA ST4
and Calamus 1.09N. I have often considered investing in a TT030-
based DTP system and upgrading to Calamus SL but frankly, unless
it is financially beneficial for me to do so, I probably won't.
If enough Calamus SL users would be willing to pay for templates
designed to match the colors and graphics/patterns pre-printed on
PaperDirect's products, that might provide enough incentive for me
to purchase an appropriately configured TT030 along with
applicable software, and redo the templates accordingly.

Looking at the economics of that proposition, I would expect that
such a system would cost somewhere around $6,000, perhaps slightly
more. PaperDirect currently charges $39.95 for their Mac and/or PC
templates, all inclusive. If I charged the same amount, that would
mean that about 150 SL users would have to buy my templates, just
so I could recoup the cost of the TT030 and software. How long
that would take is anybody's guess. That would still leave me with
no compensation for the time and/or materials to provide the end-
product. AH! The trials and tribulations of the Atari developer!

I am open to any/all suggestions anyone may have pertaining to a
viable manner by which I could realize some sort of equitable
financial gain for undertaking such an endeavor. I would not
expect to make a fortune but, I have neither the time nor
inclination to do it for free either. Much less spend $6,000 for
naught.

NOTE: I've already contacted PaperDirect about selling the
templates to them outright, or supplying disks to them on a
consignment basis. As you might suspect, they were not interested.

AND FINALLY
During the past few years, I have downloaded many, many things
from this Roundtable which have provided me much enjoyment and
benefit. Many thanks and kudo's to all of those who have uploaded
a veritable wealth of stuff, for others to have for only the cost
of downloading. As some measure of repayment (at least to Calamus
users), I am uploading these templates for your own enjoyment
and/or benefit.

If you have any comments, pro or con, I invite your response in
CATegory #16 (DMC), TOPic 2 (1.090N) or TOPic 20 (SL), and/or to
me personally via E-mail (address: J.P.C.).

ENJOY!
