Grammar Expert Demo =================== Copyright 1992 by Phil Comeau Software, div. of Wintertree Software Inc. Thank you for trying the Grammar Expert demo! Grammar Expert is an online reference for the rules of English grammar, punctuation, and effective writing. Grammar Expert works as a desk accessory, so you can refer to it from your favorite word processor or desktop-publishing program. This demo version of Grammar Expert contains information about punctuation only. It does not contain information on other topics available in the full version of Grammar Expert. The demo version is identical to the full version in every other way, however, so you can get a taste of how the program works. Although the demo version is limited, we think you will still find it useful. Grammar Expert works with all ST-compatible computers from the 520ST to the TT. You can install it on a floppy disk or a hard disk, and it will work with color or monochrome monitors in any resolution that supports 80-character lines. Installing the Grammar Expert Demo ================================== To install the demo version of Grammar Expert, create a folder called C:\GRAMXPRT (or A:\GRAMXPRT if you boot from diskette). Next, copy the following files to C:\GRAMXPRT (or A:\GRAMXPRT): LUINDEX.LUX LUTOC.LUT LUPAGE.LUP LUPGDIR.LUD GRAMXPRT.INF Finally, copy GRAMXPRT.ACC to C:\ (or A:\), then reboot your computer to load the Grammar Expert desk accessory. Running the Grammar Expert Demo =============================== To start the Grammar Expert demo, select the "Grammar Expert" entry in the "Desk" menu. After a few seconds, you'll see Grammar Expert's welcome message. Press the space bar to view the first page, which explains how to operate Grammar Expert. Try each feature: * Click the right mouse-button to present the action menu. Notice that the action menu appears under the mouse so you can select an action quickly. Very handy on high-resolution monitors -- no need to whip the mouse to the center of the screen! * Select the "Index" action to display Grammar Expert's index. The index is an indispensible aid for quickly locating a topic of interest. Grammar Expert's index contains over 450 entries. Just click the left mouse-button over an entry to view its associated page. (In the demo version, most entries are disabled.) You can also search for a topic via the index using the "Search..." action. * Click the left mouse-button over any highlighted word or phrase (called a "linkword") to get more information. This feature is a key part of Grammar Expert's usefulness: it makes it easy to find out about terms you aren't familiar with. (Because the demo version is limited, it contains far fewer linkwords than the full version.) Use the "Return" action to go back to the last page you were reading. * Use the "Place Bookmark" action to place a bookmark over any page. You can jump back to the marked page at any time by selecting the "Go to Bookmark" action. You can automatically place a bookmark on a page when you click on a linkword -- just hold down a key when you click. This feature makes it easy to explore other pages, then quickly return to a topic. * Select the "Contents" action to view Grammar Expert's table of contents. Click the left mouse-button over any entry in the table of contents to view its associated page. (In the demo version, only the entries in the punctuation section are enabled). You can also search for a topic via the table of contents using the "Search..." action. * You can change the color and style of text and linkwords using the "Options..." action. * Grammar Expert has online help! Select the "First Page" action, then click on the "menu" or "keyboard shortcuts" linkwords for help. * Revisit pages you read previously via the "Return" action. Press the key for a shortcut. * Read the next page in sequence by pressing the space bar or right-arrow key. Read the previous page by pressing the left- arrow key. * When viewing the index, you can locate the entries starting with a certain letter by pressing the key and that letter. For example, to quickly jump to the index entries starting with "S" press the key and key at the same time. If you try to access a page that isn't available, Grammar Expert will pop up an alert saying, "Sorry -- That page is not available in the demo verion of Grammar Expert." Of course, this message never appears in the full version.
