Actually, vector clip art? Will SL import EPS? (Heck, 3 months ago I couldn'tev'n say "ee pee ess.") Having talked to my Mac rivals I've learned there's a ****load of PD EPS clip art "out there". Those Mac types are so cruel! I say my computer is better and they say "well _we_ have software." I hope they get a virus... ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 2 Sat Oct 19, 1991 REALM [Joey] at 00:24 EDT Ken...:-) I've never seen any GEM Clip Art that impressed me. Might just be I'm not looking in the right place. GEM files always look kind of cartoonish to me compared to the IMG files. I have seen some nice B/W GEM files. Somewhere online here is 3 or 4 files that have 400 or 500 pieces. They may be over in the IBM RT. Show them an OL file mapped onto a fish, globed onto a cone.:-) ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 3 Sat Oct 19, 1991 J.COOPER21 at 05:45 EDT Nathan, I already knew that SL would support several cross platform file formats, but what I don't know (and this question could apply to all ST graphic software, not just Calamus) is how, if at all, could a person give a large color sep file to a non ST service bureau. Even though we can generate a postscipt or whatever file we would need, I was wondering how that file could be accessed by another system. If the file won't fit on a floppy, can we use a Syquest cart? Can MS DOS read an ST formatted Hard disk? Also, does anyone know how to generate a CVG in outline that is opaque white rather than transparent. I've made some good text effects and I wanted to lay them down in white over a patterned background, but the background always shows through. It would also be nice to be able to invert the color of a CVG while in Calamus. Can SL do it? Thanks. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 4 Sat Oct 19, 1991 D.GORDON2 [DENNIS] at 11:16 EDT J. Cooper: The cvg that looks transparent on screen will actually print opaque. It's just a bug which can be remedied by the famous Bob Gillies copy fix. You simply make a *virtual* copy of the cvg, or group of them, and this mysteriously turns the transparent section opaque. Then cut the copy to the clipboard to get it out of the way. Easy to do. SL has a non-white inverted function which automatically inverts any type of frame when put over a dark background. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 5 Sat Oct 19, 1991 SANDY.W [RT SysOp] at 22:52 EDT We do have some GEM clip art in Library 18. First use some form of Editor to see what character is being used in your wordprocessor for a tab. Then search and replace that charater with the one used by Calamus. As for a program that does import tabs correctly, I believe Word Perfect does. Now for a real question. Do you really need to import tabs? If you only need a tab at the begining of a paragraph; you can use the "Paragraph tab in the text ruller and you don't need to have tabs in your text. >> Joe Meehan << ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 16 Sun Nov 03, 1991 L.ROCHA1 [Lou Rocha] at 10:51 EST Ed, I have the same problem. Here are two solutions. Buy Calamus S or SL with the PKS-Write editor. It will hold tabs from other WP's and then send them into Calamus. In the meantime, use an unneeded symbol (like * or ^) instead of a tab. Then, import the file into Calamus. Go to the text editor and search and replace your * or ^ with [Control]+[i]. A tab character will be inserted into your layout. Then set the tab in the ruler wherever you like. Hope this helps... ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 17 Tue Nov 05, 1991 J.COOPER21 at 05:53 EST A question I asked earlier was never answered. When doing color work with SL will it be possible to output files at a non Atari service bureau? If so how? Will files on Atari formatted syquests be readable by MS Dos or Mac systems? How will fonts be handled? Also, does anyone have any hints on creating the following 3d effects with Outline Art? One is a ribbon of text that is wrapped around an invisible cylinder. You will see the "back" side of the type at the points where the type would be hidden if the cylinder was not invisible. (I hope that's intelligible, by the way). The other thing I can't figure out how to do is make a 3D representation of some type. I want to make it look like the letters are made out of solid blocks and then oriented some way in space. Sort of like if the letters were carved out of wood and you were looking at them at some point to the left and below them while they were floating in space. Thanks fer comin. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 18 Tue Nov 05, 1991 ISD [Nathan] at 11:02 EST Sorry for missing the question previously. It appears you are asking if Calamus SL will do color PostScript output. The answer to that is eventually YES but not yet. And no, do not expect to bring in an Atari formatted Syquest to input to a Mac cause it's not going to work. If you are doing serious color work in Calamus SL, which will become fairly common, it will be recommended that you take the work to a service bureau that owns an Atari workstation including SoftRIP. The cost comparitively to them is minimal vs the potential work. Help me open these bureaus please or better, help your local Atari Dealer open and support them. It is a great deal easier for an Atari Dealer to sell the workstation if they present it with a current customer of the bureau that will use the workstation. :-) I'll leave the Outline Art questions to those better qualified to answer. Nathan ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 19 Tue Nov 05, 1991 SGUBER at 20:01 EST j.Cooper The wooden letters floating in space is an excellent idea. The program to do this is CAD3D. Until now the trusty old hand scanner has been fine. Well tonight I got a job doing a fairly big flyer mailing for a friend of mine who owns a club. So what's the problem? About eight 8X10 black & white photos per issue. What's the best way to go? Should I have a printer do half-tones on them? Or would I be better off getting them scanned on a flatbed scanner? This is all new to me. If I have the photos half-toned & pasted in the piece, what's the going rate of this service? Looking foreward to your professional assistance... Jeff @ Diadem Page Design ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 24 Wed Nov 06, 1991 J.ALLEN27 [FAST TECH] at 22:47 EST You could always get a GCR and use it as an ST to Mac disk swapper ;-) But actually, many Mac houses have bulliten boards so you CAN modem your pages over to them as PS files. But ALSO most Mac houses have Superdrives and can read ST floppies fine. I'm not sure, but scanning an 8x10 photo would eat up quite a bit of memory. I've always just plopped the pix in, which you can do too; no need to have someone else do it for $20/hr. Xacto knife, straight edge and an eyeball will do. Well, so much for my professional assistance.... ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 26 Thu Nov 07, 1991 ISD [Nathan] at 09:42 EST Thanks for sharing this with us Dennis. Mario says: Depending upon your actual print requirements, 300 dpi flat-bed scanners are usually only acceptable for low-res output. Greyscale will enhance that but it is still usually more acceptable to have your own printer "strip in" the relevant photographs. Or, as Dennis suggested, get out the old X-acto knife and slice and dice to your hearts content. :-) WARNING!! NEVER slice up your original. :-) ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 27 Thu Nov 07, 1991 EXPLORER [John J.] at 15:26 EST To Jeff Sims: Scanning photos on a flatbed scanner will work fine. But even the pretty good ones have trouble reproducing all of the tones in a clear B/W photo. The other aspect of the problem lies in output. A printer's screened halftone employs different-SIZED dots to create tonal variants, whereas a laser printer or phototypesetter uses dots of the same size, arranged in CLUSTERS, to approximate the same effect. An ancillary problem is that if you use your DTP system to generate a "classic" 133-line halftone, the 300 dpi laser won't be able to reproduce it, precisely, since 133 doesn't go evenly into 300. Calamus has functions to correct for this (and, at a less critical, but still significant level, to correct for the similar problem when outputting to a phototypesetter at 1,270 dpi, which also isn't an even multiple of 133), but if you don't know how to use them, you'll get dark bands and moire. Then, there's enlargement and reduction to consider. For commercial work, therefore, I prefer to skip this hassle and handle photos by conventional means. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 28 Thu Nov 07, 1991 REALM [Joey] at 18:34 EST Jeff, If your handscanner does a good enough job you might want to just scan them using a flatbed. It mainly depends on your printing device. If your just going to print using a Laser printer then just use a 300Dpi Grey Scale scanner. It's gonna use a ton of memory for the full 8X10's but you can scan at 150Dpi and reduce the size of the print to 4X5. If your going to have the letter copied on a copy machine you might consider just having the prints copied then cut them out and paste away using the exacto knife to crop. Guess it all depends on the quality your seeking. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 29 Thu Nov 07, 1991 R.GILLIES at 22:48 EST I just caught the tail end of an IBM TV commercial for their 600dpi printer. Appreciated, Jeff @ Diadem Page Design ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 34 Sat Nov 09, 1991 L.ROCHA1 [Lou Rocha] at 08:27 EST Calamus SL also has relative measurment features. For example, instead of specifying the weight of an underline in points, inches, mm, etc., you can specifiy a percentage of the current font. This means that your style sheet will use the same ratio of underline size and offset : font size for all applications. Relative measurement is available in a number of the command groups. Adjust it evenly in each direction. There is a program called MONOALIGN that draws perfect circles and squares on the screen for you so you can tell if you've gone too far. (I'm not sure if it's in the library or not.) You can also use Calamus to draw a perfect square. Make sure it's perfect by checking the frame coordinates and then adjust your monitor to achieve precisely the same measurements on all sides of the square. Use a real ruler or better yet use a point scale for greater accuracy. Distorting the aspect ratio will give you nothing but grief in the long run. ..Todd ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 43 Mon Nov 11, 1991 ISD [Nathan] at 08:52 EST I have real strong glasses Mike. :-) Bob, we used a converted Mac digitizer interface. :-) As soon as a proper interface becomes available I will be happy to share that info with you. One of his suggestions was to give him the reduction ratio for photos to be stripped in. Is there an easy way to do this? I preserve the aspect ratio by measuring the original photo, entering the exact measurements & then reducing the frames with that one icon... I forget what it's called... maybe it's preserve aspect ratio. How can I take the information that Calamus gives me & give him a reduction percentage? Is there an easy formula I can use or would I be better off just getting a traditional resizing "wheel" like printers use? If it's more than ten buck a shot (for 8x10s) you'd be better off to put them in yourself using an idiot wheel (what we call a proportion wheel in Chicago). If the printer's going to do it for you, you can simply put a tissue over the photos and mark the keyline area where you want it cropped and let him do the calculations for you. I personally prefer to do it myself so I know exactly what it's going to look like. Lately, I've also been using the trick of not cutting the halftone itself, but rather cutting out the inside of the frame along the borders and overlaying it on the picture. This keeps you from agonizing over a slip of the knife, and also saves the halftone if you want to use it again in a different size frame. If you screw up in cutting out the frame you can just output another page. You can use rubber cement or even tape to hold the pix in place. Doesn't look that great from the back but it does work. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 51 Wed Nov 13, 1991 J.SIMS5 [Jeff Sims] at 02:14 EST Dennis, My printer's charging me $5.00 per halftone. I forgot that I had seen those 2 phones. They're a little elaborate for my need, since I just want a basic "outline" of a touchtone phone for a communications-related diagram. But they are a good start. +++++ So, back to Calamus-specific stuff .... How can I import a vector graphic and clip it down to just what I want by using Calamus and/or Outline Art? I can use raster frames to overlay the sections I don't want, but I'd much prefer to trim the graphic to only what I want. That makes it easier to use the graphic alongside others to make a larger diagram. -- Harry ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 59 Fri Nov 15, 1991 REALM [Joey] at 03:33 EST Harry, I think the way you stated is probable the best aside from altering the graphic. Just lay white over the parts you don't want then group all the frames together. Then put it to the back and everything else should overlap the white. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 60 Fri Nov 15, 1991 J.MEEHAN3 [>> Joe M << ] at 06:36 EST Harry, I know this may not be your question, but if you want to display only a part of an image in Calamus (vector graphic) select the tools Icon, you can then select the scissors to cut out the part your want, eliminating the parts around it. >> Joe Meehan << ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 61 Fri Nov 15, 1991 L.PECKHAM at 06:42 EST HI, Everyone! Just thought I'd drop a note and let you know that my latest clip-art catalog is out. I've sent it to everyone on my mailing list -- if you've requested it at some point, and don't get it within the next few days, give me a holler via E-mail -- I know I accidentally lost a couple of requests a few months ago when I quit the terminal program without saving the messages. (Hey, Nathan, you'll have to wait until next week for a copy -- I figure no sense wasting 40 cents when ISD will be at the show. :) ) For those of you wondering about it, I fear my selection of vector clip-art is very meager at the moment, but it will certainly be growing, now that I have Avant Vektor... Hope to see a lot of you at Chicago! -- Linda Peckham Electronic Spinster Graphics ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 62 Fri Nov 15, 1991 H.WOOTAN [Harry] at 08:04 EST Joe, I thought the scissors were available only for dealing with bit-image graphics. But I didn't actually try to see whether they'd let me "cut" on a vector graphic frame. I'll give that a try. If it doesn't work, I guess Joey may be right ... that the best way would be to hide the undesirable pieces of the graphic with raster frames. At least there's a way. (Of course, if I'd just spring for one of the vector graphic packages that are now available, I'd probably be in business. I guess that goes high on my list now.) I know that I can import lots of Atari clip art with Calamus, but how about Mac and IBM converted stuff? I've got a nifty little program which will convert MacPaint files into IMG format, but is there a way to import TIFF, GED (Arts & Letters), or EPS clip art? Also, is anyone familiar with the Mac RT here on GEnie to direct me to the proper locale for such clip art (I started to do a search on "MAC" until I realized that that was as useful as doing a search under "CALAMUS" here ). Oh, and why is it that all the clip art here on GEnie seems to be animals or military vehicles? Is there THAT much of a need for military vehicles as clip art? Maybe animals driving military vehicles? Also, (since I'm not inclined to download HOURS worth of clip art) can anyone suggest some good files here on GEnie? Unless of course, you want to run multiple copies of legal size paper. In fact, the 605 has sort of a mind of its own with regard to changing paper sizes. The 804 was very well behaved and did whatever it was told on the Calamus print screen. The 605 however, must be set on its control panel BEFORE pulling up the Calamus page layout screen or you may not be able to change page sizes in Calamus. Also, the 605 balks at printing multiple copies of legal size paper through Calamus. So far, I haven't found a way around that, besides manually feeding the paper using the manual feed button on the 605's control panel for each page. Eagerly, I watched the brown UPS van pull up in the driveway. With great anticipation I saw him bring a big, white box from the rear of the van. Joy -- it was my new Atari SLM605!!! I could hardly contain myself as I signed the data pad and took the box into my computer room. I don't know which caused more excitement: this or the arrival of Calamus, not so long ago. Happiness has turned to FRUSTRATION and the desire to CHOKE anyone wearing a name tage saying "Employed by Atari." First, the manual for my $1100 printer was the SLM804 manual (grrr), and the instructions for installing the toner unit and drum were cryptic (oh, for the good old days of big, shiny, silver Atari picture-manuals again). OK, I can deal with it. BUT, after getting everything all nicely hooked up and at home on my desk, I try to, oh, PRINT with the SLM605. Silly me...am I required to emulate >bleh< a Diablo 630 ALL THE TIME? It doesn't matter, as even with the emulator in my auto folder, Calamus still kindly informs me that I don't have enough memory for the printer driver when I try to print. Mind you, I'm using a Mega 2...and I've disabled everything but NeoDesk, the Diablo driver, and FujiDesk ('cause it's just too cute to lose). Why oh WHY must Atari make life so difficult? SO, can ANYONE help me with this dilemma, especially since I have SEVERAL school projects to print out by TOMORROW (grrrr)....? What am I doing wrong? I'm using the Calamus SLM804 printer driver, I have that dumb Diablo emulator installed (I tried it with and without, both times Calamus claimed that I didn't have enough memory). And, did EVERYONE get an SLM804 manual/disks with their SLM605? Help me....please!!! Kerim ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 100 Tue Nov 26, 1991 WAYNED. [Wayne] at 22:28 EST Kerim, I don't have a Laser printer, but do have some suggestions to save you some memory and hopefully bring you to a level where you can print at least. First off, disable FujiDesk, it may be *cute* but it's eating up at least some of your all too valuable memory. Next check out your configuration in NeoDesk to see if you have it remaining resident when you run a program or not. You want it to drop from memory when you run a program and then reload after you exit your program. That will probably give you a decent sized chunk of memory back. If you already have it configured that way, or it still doesn't give you enough memory then you'll have to disable NeoDesk to get your printing done. Hopefully that will give you enough memory. If you use SuperBoot, DeskManager, or some other such utility then you can set up one of the presets to disable everything when you want to print. Lastly if may be that your document is too large and eating up too much memory. If that's the case, then save out a page or two at a time and then print out in small chunks. Depending on how elaborate your pages are you might be able to only print a one page document. You might also try using the TODISK driver. Again I don't have a laser, but from what I understand it uses less memory, and save a printer image file to your disk. Then you can exit Calamus and just send the file to the printer. Again I don't know how much the TODISK driver would gain you, but I know someone with Calamus and a Laser with only 2 megs and that was one method he used until he got more memory. I'm sure Nathan and some of the other users can be of more help, but I saw you had just posted so I figured I'd give you a couple suggestions that I've used, and/or heard about other people using. Wayne ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 101 Wed Nov 27, 1991 REALM [Joey] at 00:05 EST Kerim, I have an SLM804 but it came with the correct directions.:-) I've always had 4 megs of RAM so I haven't had any problems with printing from Calamus. I know Calamus will use the printer without the Diablo Driver so you might axe that and anything else you can do with out. Then split up up your pages into smaller units. If I remember correctly Touch-Up requires about a 1400K buffer to print with the SLM-804 so that might be some kind of guage to how much memory you need to print a page? You picked a good printer for Calamus you just need to expand your memory to take full advantage of it. If your going to be printing a lot of graphics and stuff your best bet is to add 2Megs of memory. I'm sure Nathan can give you some more ideas on getting by with 2Megs. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 102 Wed Nov 27, 1991 CAPT.SPOCK at 01:23 EST Well.... Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm going to log off and try all of them now...(although, FujiDesk only takes up 1k, so I'm gonna leave it in ) I tried the TODISK driver, but perhaps I simply misundertood the directions, as it didn't work. The way that both the manual and the Calamus guide talk, they imply that I use the TODISK driver to print and that the next time I load Calamus, it will automatically print my file. As in, I print to disk, quit Calamus, reload Calamus, and it prints. Welllll, that didn't happen. I'll try just sending that file to the printer, but I have doubts..... This is pretty raw. It was my understanding that 2 megs was plenty for printing with Calamus and an SLM605. That's one reason that I dumped my Panasonic laser in favour of the Atari. Plus, it was REALLY unprofessional of Atari to have an $1100.00 laser printer and include the *old* SLM804 manual. The instructions for installing the toner and drum unit were, ah, wrong. It took me several minutes to reason it all out (not that is it hard, just that the instructions and reality were >close< but not close enough)...in some ways, I feel cheated. Gee, thanks Atari.... Kerim PS - anyone that DOES have an SLM605, please still reply to my plea for help!!! Did you get a 605 or 804 manual? Is it just my "mere" 2 megs, or is something really wrong here? ---NATHAN???? Any ideas?--- ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 103 Wed Nov 27, 1991 REALM [Joey] at 04:44 EST O.K. I know how to use the Print to disk feature...Yeah!:-) Go to Calamus and use the print to disk driver. Make sure it's set to the right page size before you print (letter-legal). In the PRINTER folder with the printer drivers theres a program called DSKPRT.PRG, put it in the same folder with the .IMG file and double click it. Your document should print. I just tried it and it works fine. I would imagine most the directions in the 804 manual would be close. Your Laser printer should be the first device in the DMA chain and it should be set to 5 or 7. Probable factory set to 5. You should be able to print the test from the Diablo.ACC and make sure it works correctly. Hope that helps! ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 104 Wed Nov 27, 1991 CAPT.SPOCK at 05:14 EST Everyone- THANKS for the help...I was seriously frustrated with everything when I posted my last message (gee, could you get that hostility tone?)... I think I _should_ apologize to everyone, esp. Nathan, for sort of implying like I was "led on." I still have a few gripes about the 605, but they are 100% gripes at Atari (what I consider to be sub-standard case design for a printer costing $1100.00, unprofessionalism of using the SLM804 manual (which isn't REALLY close enough to work, especially in the first-time installation instructions)). Well, to outline what happened...I did as everyone suggested, disabling EVERYTHING and trying to make Calamus run. I did that, and it wouldn't print (as I said before, just trying to print "Test"). I then got on here to complain and whine (I can do THAT well). Yah, well, just after I sent my message, I gave in to the idea that I would have to use my roommate's IBM (yuck). His computer is on a rolling cart, and he wheeled it right in front of the ST and SLM605. I guess the sight of me "turning Big Blue" and USING an Intel-based machine was too much for my 'lil ST, as when I gave a big sigh and tried to make the SLM605 work ONE LAST TIME....it did. WHY it worked I'll never understand...I had everything de-selected from my AUTO folder...no d/a's. I cold booted that way, just like before. Everything was the same...yet, it worked. I *even* have it working with Pinhead, Atari Mouse Accelerator, FujiDesk, and UIS III in my AUTO folder. To top it all off, I **EVEN** have it working through NeoDesk! Which cosmic rays caused it to work this way, exactly as I was about 30 minutes after I first started playing with the printer, I don't know. I just wish those rays would hit in a more timely manner....and, while they're at it, I wish they'd hit my BBS as well.... ANYWAY, I wanted to apologize for ranting and raving like I did. It's neat to know that people *will* help out on a problem like this... Thanks! :) Kerim PS- I'm still gonna upgrade to 4 megs as soon as I can...and, maybe even that nifty T20 25 Mhz speed upgrade, too.... ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 105 Thu Nov 28, 1991 C.EISENSCHMI [Ike] at 00:46 EST Kerim: Joey was right about the to disk feature...I uploaded a file almost 3 years ago explaining how it works. The 605 is NOTHING like the 804 in the assembly of the drum and toner and other necesities (like the page counter). Atari really blew it. Fortunately for our store the EPL 6000 (and now the Action Laser) are the same so I opened the box and borrowed the instructions. OK...the Atari Laser needs .96 megs of free memory to print an 8.5x11 sheet of paper. It needs 1.4 megs to print 8.5x14. If you boot the computer and run Calamus with the switch on the front of the laser set to legal or almost any other setting other than letter you will most likely NOT have enough memory to print even some simple pages. Add the diablo driver, and if you have loaded more that one font into the diablo emulator, you are taking valuable Memory from Calamus. So don't run the diablo emulator when you will be using Calamus. And speaking of fonts...each font loaded into Calamus takes up memory. I believe you can use a "hot" key to check the memory available, try ALT M. If thats not it use Statistics from the Extras drop down menu. This will tell you how much memory you have available. To wrap this up, it is possible you had one or a combination the above situations using more memory than Calamus needed. Then you disabled the rebooted, diabled the diablo emulator and started a new document. Anyone of those could have given you enough memory. So it probably wasn't gremlins, but just to be sure, leave them some food near the printer so they get distracted. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 106 Thu Nov 28, 1991 CAPT.SPOCK at 03:00 EST Ike- Thanks...I discovered the free memory statistic while trying to get everything to work. Knowing that I need .96 megs free for 8.5 x 11 will make my life easier...thus far, I've been holding my breath each time I print. Thankfully, I'm not planning on doing anything but standard letter size for a while.... As for what was wrong...I dunno. Maybe it was something I missed disabling the first time around, but knowing Atari products, I REALLY suspect that it was gremlins. Of course, my computer just loves to have a PMS fit once in a while...my car does it more often, but my ST has its turn as well. I'll just have to remember that the sight of my roommate's 386SX cowed the system into working...good thing he's got it on a cart that has wheels (a portable computer? Yeah, sure...) Heh heh...you want to talk gremlins...try running a BBS using custom software on an 8-bit using ICD's MI/O. American Motors made less gremlins than I have in THAT system.... Kerim PS: to everyone, I want to apologize again for throwing a tantrum here on GEnie. It was inappropriate. However, I *still* am buged by Atari's lack of professionalism...so, THEY'RE not off the hook. >grin< ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 107 Thu Nov 28, 1991 CAPT.SPOCK at 03:05 EST I had a question... Exactly WHAT does garbage collection do under the Extras pull down? I understand the broad concept -- collect bits of garbage memory and clean them up so provide more free memory for printing, etc. But, WHAT garbage is there, why is it there? How does this garbage get in there? Anyway, I love the feature, as it eases my mind for printing...but, WHAT IS IT? Kerim ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 108 Thu Nov 28, 1991 ISD [Nathan] at 10:31 EST S.FEENEY...I will do my best to insure that everyone does a review of Calamus SL, in conjunction with Atari. :-) Hopefully lots of solid positive press will result. I like that. :-) Kerim...that will teach you to ask a question in cat 16. :-) We love questions here. Sometines I even get to answer them too but more often I never get the chance. Thanks guys for all the help. Besides Linda's great stuff, I think that Carl and Henry have a new clip art library hitting the market. You out there guys? No argument about an SLM804 manual in the SLM605 box. I felt the exact same way. The TODISK is designed to work off a 1 Mbyte ST to an SLM804 and it does. If you have the DSKPRT.PRG in the autofolder with the PAGE.IMG beside it, it will print upon bootup. Good post Ike, thank you. Kerin...the "Garbage" thingamabobber (I hate that word. I'm having it changed :-)) simply dumps the cache memory. For example if you view your page in "Normal" size then switch to "full page" size, the memory of the "Normal" page will be retained in cache memory. Axctivating the "Garbage" thing, wipes that memory of the page, and restores the RAM being used to retain it. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 109 Thu Nov 28, 1991 C.STANFORD at 19:40 EST Well since Nathan asked.... A lot of pd fonts, mostly from GEnie, some originals I've done with GENUS and the Cal Font Editor, a bunch of pd PS conversions a friend has done using (I think) FONTVERTER. Oh - and a few that I converted from PageStream format using GENUS. One thing these conversions don't do when the light's off is kern themselves. I'm about 50 fonts behind on the "kerning curve." ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 111 Fri Nov 29, 1991 CAPT.SPOCK at 03:03 EST OOooooh, so THAT'S what the garbage thing does. What're ya renaming it to, Nathan? How about "Memory Miser?" It's saved me twice now.... And, although not Calamus related, a quick SLM605 question....how do I print to the SLM605 via places like the Flash capture buffer and the like? I just tried to print out some info from GEnie, and it obviously tried to output to the Printer Port, not the DMA -- I got an alert box informing me that my printer was not online. (Sometimes, I wish for the good old days of 8-bit "Error 139" type messages...they were cryptic, but at least then you could scream and rant over the vagueness and stupidness of the system. Now, it's too clear...I just go "Oh..." at the alert boxes... ALTHOUGH, Calamus' "Fatal Internal Error Xj2984/261bs" does a good job at emulating "Error 139"....NAK NAK NAK NAK NAK...) Kerim ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 112 Fri Nov 29, 1991 CHERRY.FONTS at 03:33 EST Capt. Spock: A 'garbage collection' dumps the screen font caches. ie: When you select and use a font at a given size, Calamus creates the necessary screen font on the fly. Rather than having to go through that every time it wants to draw the same style/size of text, it saves the 'drawings' of that font size and style in a cache. If you've displayed your page at a lot of different zooms and have a lot of different fonts on your page, you'll have a lot of your memory tied up in various font caches. I recommend doing a 'garbage collection' immediately before printing (since Calamus doesn't automatically do it for you.) After dumping the 'garbage' your screen redraws will be slow again until the fonts have had a chance to become re-cached. Hope that made sense. ..Todd @ Cherry Fonts ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 113 Fri Nov 29, 1991 S.WINICK at 06:49 EST Capt.Spok: The Calamus 'Garbage Collection' essentially recovers the fragmented memory that builds up during a session with Calamus. Whenever you make changes, for example, fragmented memory is left scattered about. Think of it as you would when you optimize your hard drive to recover the fragmeted memory there to improve the performance of the drive. To give you an example, load up a Calamus document and check the Garbage Collection dialog box to see how much available RAM is left. Then go make a few changes, deletions, moves etc. in your document. Go back to the Garbage Collection dialog, check again how much RAM is available; do a garbage collection and watch how much RAM is recovered! Ever get a 'file not compatible' type message in Calamus when trying to import a graphic? That's because the graphic is not going to like being imported into an area with that fragmented memory. Get in the habit of doing a garbage collection before any import, and you'll never see that message again (unless of course your graphic really is not compatible). All you techies out there will have to excuse my overly simplistic, layman's analysis. I'm really not into the really technical aspect of programming or hardware design -- just enough to get by and keep my customers up and running efficiently. :-] Sheldon Winick (Computer STudio - Asheville, NC) ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 114 Fri Nov 29, 1991 SANDY.W [RT SysOp] at 11:27 EST Kerim - There is a lot of useful general SLM information available in the Atari laser topic in Category 14 Topic 11. Should we all warm up our credit cards for S/SL? Actually, I do have a question...Just why does that "Raster" button exist in the Print Menu? If I am being unclear, it is because I am tired. Anyway, I created a logo for my newsletter using Outline Art which has a raster area fade from 100% to 0% (well, 6%, but who's being picky?)...Welllll, the fade turned out pretty yucky. It was ultra- banded and didn't look very laser printed. Plus, I had noticed that any raster area I created with a level of over 50% was, in essense, the same as 100%. Of course, the newsletter is off to the print shop and the first issue will have to deal with the blah fade (it isn't horrible, but...) Anyway, either I didn't really read my manual (of course I didn't) or I'm just dumb. I just tried turning that raster "button" on and my fade is beautifal, and all my rasters are perfect grey scales (68% is REALLY 68%). So, like, my QUESTION is WHY would anyone NOT want that raster button turned on? What does it do -- no, I know what it does (make good rasters), but WHY does it to that? Captain Spock ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 135 Tue Dec 31, 1991 J.MEEHAN3 [>> Joe M << ] at 07:34 EST Flynn, The Raster button in the print Menu changes the way your rastered fonts and fills will be printed. Since we don't have true grey scale printers, the printers we do have print grey by printing a number of dots. Calamus can print a lot of dots per inch. The problem is not all printers reproduce those dots well, particularly if you plan on reproducing those documents on a copy machine. The Raster and 1X, 2X and 4X will decrease the number of dots per inch (increasing the size of each dot) and make the raster area look a little rougher, but it may print better. Try the different settings with a raster area and see for yourself. >> Joe Meehan << ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 136 Wed Jan 01, 1992 M.ABDULKAREE [ASX] at 16:10 EST The raster is used for high resolution printers. I have contracted graphic artists many times to produce artwork. I like to get copies of the art in data formats so I can use it in various artwork and stuff I produce with Calamus, but basically everyone has only Mac and/or PC formats. It seems that the only non-Calamus vector format that Calamus 109N can handle is GEM and it seems that it cannot handle many features of GEM files (such as filled polygons). What's a person to do? I need you expert ISDers out there for some advice.... I've got a deadline and 'ol Calamus is being . I have a landscape, legal sized doc that won't print correctly on my SLM804. The page is comprised of: 1) a .5"h x 12"w dynamic greyscale, .5" from the top. 2) a grid composed of 38 vertical and 26 horizontal .3mm dotted lines spaced .25 apart. 3) 2 boxes of "normal" Trium. light 10pt text. 4) 2 boxes of outline (.3mm dynamic) Trium. light 10pt. text. 5) One box of white Safari Copper 14pt overlaying the DGS box at the top. (Sounds like an old Army recipe :-) 6) a small OLA generated CVG with a circular DGS. All margins except top are 1" or greater. The grid is roughly 2x wider than high and centered on the page. When I try to print, this puppy takes about 15 minutes (for about 70 objects) and totaly "blacks out" the page below the 2nd horiz. grid line (1-7/8" below the top) AGGGH! Lottsa toner... Observations: a) One of the outlined text boxes shows up as white fill on top of the black. The other is buried. b) I deleted all the horizontal lines and it prints fine. c) While watching the objects count down (printing), the horizontal lines take *much* longer to set up than the other objects - Those 26 horiz. lines are taking up nearly 10 minutes of the 15 minute setup/print time! d) Occasional system lockup after printing/manipulating . My system is a MST4, TOS 1.04. All accessories and autos were stripped out except DeskManager 3.0 and QST2. The CDK is 32749 bytes. Everything else (except me) is working fine. Any ideas? (BTW, I have had an Adspeed board in the box for months, pending the 2-3+ day tie-up time for dealer installation. Catch-22 :-) I forget just how much I appreciate and depend on the "transparent" software like UIS and QST. Anyway, I noticed that using the printer 1:1 mode also produces the blackout on the screen, including "overfilling" the window onto the tool boxes (from screen edge-to-edge in horizontal bands). This leads me to believe it might be a printer driver problem with 8.5x14 landscape. I also eliminated all other objects on the page (except hor. lines). Still no dice. Even if I eliminate all but a few of the horizontal lines, it still blacks out below the first remaining line. But, if I turn off the line object display icon, the screen does not blackout. The "snap to aux. lines" & "snap to grid" functions quit working also. ANY attempt to exit Calamus causes a lockup with odd garbage at the top of the screen after "view printer 1:1" or actual print. I too have had problems with a very few CVGs. And all were created with OLA. I looked for open object paths but that wasn't it. Printing problem resolved! I owe you one...or two... Ahhhhh, isn't life wonderful? Joey - OK, that answers my question about splitting. I'll have to remember that trick. BTW, I think my computer is influenced by the phases of the moon or something. My wife has never trusted its "personality" - wait 'till I spring Dr. Bob's eyes on her...(chuckle) Doug! ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 153 Wed Jan 08, 1992 ISD [Nathan] at 17:43 EST Not fair Doug. :-) Now you are obligated to share what happened with all the lurkers. :-) Seriously though, for those of you that have been following this, we identified horizontal dotted lines as the cause of Doug's heartache. Once the lines were changed to solid everything went back to normal with no adverse affect to the excellent layout of Doug's template. So, for future reference, do not use thousands of dots on a legal size page in Calamus. :-) ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 154 Thu Jan 09, 1992 D.WALTER7 [Doug Walter] at 00:20 EST Nathan - Thanks for the compliment. Not fair huh? (I ask with hands behind head and feet propped up on keyboard...) Of course, all this won't matter anyway cuz SL handles ZILLIONS of horizontal dots, right? And now the rest of the story... I went on to finish the "solid line" layout, and delivered by deadline. Ms. Customer smiled and said "Looks good - but I've changed my mind. I think I'd like this better with dotted lines...." I gave her 8 bottles of Wite-Out and a magnifying glass. Cheers! Doug @ Interface ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 155 Thu Jan 09, 1992 ISD [Nathan] at 09:41 EST Doug...I have a feeling you are serious. Did Ms. Customer really insist on a dotted line instead of the clean smooth solid one? Oh no. And yes, this difficulty better not exist in SL. I'm going to try it as soon as I get offline. While the topic police might get a tad peeved at me (please accept my sincere apologies Sandy) I love the banter that we enjoy in Category 16 and I am proud to be a part of it. Shaun...I have another idea. I'll use UPS providing that you take personal responsibility for the actions of your company. :-) And I could never leave product out on the loading dock. Actually, I am going to create a new page with thousands of WHITE vertical lines and then re-feed the original BLACK horizontal line copy back through the laser. Voila! Instant dotted lines........ For all the bits-o-wit posted, those same authors are more than educating me with their questions and answers. This category alone has eased my job tremendously (read: decreased frustration = increased productivity). No, Ms. Customer didn't ABSOLUTELY INSIST on dotted lines, I just thought it was kind of funny that she even mentioned it at all. Sheesh, she'll never know. I was just a little giddy because that account is dear to me and I had givin up on making the deadline. Well, the rest is history, thanks to all the help from everyone! Does anyone have a way to spool Calamus output to disk so I can dump it to the clone's printer. "Other" is available with the Epson driver to do this but not with the HP Drivers. The ToDisk driver seems to need a laser printer connected to work and other spooling utilities I've tried do not want to spool Calamus output. Rudy Sennema ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 159 Sat Jan 11, 1992 SGUBER at 17:58 EST Rudy: Thre are several programs that will take the file from the printer and save it to disk. However each page will be about 1100K long file. If you cannot ARC it and DEARC it, it will not fit on a disk, and to send it by a null cable, would also take much time. There is no real good way of doing this. Sol ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 160 Sun Jan 12, 1992 R.SENNEMA [Rudy] at 00:19 EST Sol, Thanks very much. I was wondering how large the file would be.It looks like I'll need those 1.44 Meg Floppys :) I'm presently doing this with another DTP program and the files are about 700K @ 300 DPI-they just fit on a disk without compressing it. Out of curiousity-what programs will spool the HP output? I've got lots of RAM and Hard Disk space & would like to try it. Rudy ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 161 Sun Jan 12, 1992 SGUBER at 08:54 EST Rudy: I think there is a PD program called Barrel which is a printer spooler and can save to disk. Thr ere is a commercail one called DUMPIT, which did the same thing. These are both aboth 4 years old. Sol ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 162 Sun Jan 12, 1992 ISD [Nathan] at 13:47 EST Rudy, borrow the HP from the office and hook it up to your Atari or even better, bring your Atari in and then stand back and watch your co-workers have fun at your expense, until your Calamus document appears out of the HP. Then have fun at theirs. :-) ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 163 Sun Jan 12, 1992 J.MEEHAN3 [>> Joe M << ] at 21:12 EST I belive Calamus writes directly to the port, by passing the operating system and therefor by passing any printer spoolers. >> Joe Meehan << ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 164 Mon Jan 13, 1992 ISD [Nathan] at 08:07 EST Joe's comment is essentially correct at this time. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 165 Mon Jan 13, 1992 WAYNED. [Wayne] at 21:21 EST >Joe's comment is essentially correct at this time. Bad, Bad program! 50 lashes with an icky printer ribbon! :-) Seriously though a program that prints out as much data as a DTP program cries out for a printer spooler. For a DTP program Calamus is quite fast, but still takes a considerable amount of time to print out even relatively small documents. I don't use Calamus anywhere near as much as most of the people here probably do and I know that I've wished for the ability to be able to spool my output. It seems almost a crime to have my computer twiddling it's thumbs (HEY! Computers have thumbs!) waiting for the printer to print out it's measly 200 cps. And I don't even have an accelerator (will the one in my truck work? ). Is this something that's been addressed in S & SL? I sure hope so. Wayne ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 166 Tue Jan 14, 1992 ISD [Nathan] at 07:58 EST Wayne...I think it has more to do with the manner in which Calamus would prefer to send a page. Basically it builds up the image of the entire page in RAM, then sends it. A printer spooler would have to be able to hold that RAM which means, the printer spooler would take that RAM away from Calamus and that is not acceptable. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 167 Tue Jan 14, 1992 WAYNED. [Wayne] at 19:39 EST Nathan, Yes, I know that, but even AFTER the page has been built up it takes FOREVER for a page to print on a dot matrix printer. At least in the driver I use it's print a line, pause 1-3 seconds, print the next line, pause 1-3 seconds, etc. I'd at least like to see a TODISK driver that didn't require a laser printer. I'm sure it would dump to disk MUCH faster than a dot matrix can print. Then I could get out of Calamus and print out in the background while I move onto something else. Either doing more work in Calamus, or moving on to the next application while my document is being printed out in the background. Would an external printer buffer speed up the output? Since it's external it wouldn't eat up any memory that Calamus wants. Besides some of us have 4 megs and can afford enough memory for a printer spooler to print out a page or two. :-) Wayne ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 168 Wed Jan 15, 1992 D.GORDON2 [DENNIS] at 02:34 EST I've always wondered what exactly the JOB version of Calamus that comes with the softRIP does. Does it allow you to send a queue of different files to the imagesetter without having to call the files to the screen? Or am I totally wrong? Jez wonderin'........ ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 169 Wed Jan 15, 1992 R.MONFORT1 [LEXICOR] at 08:48 EST Dennis. You are correct. Ringo. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 170 Wed Jan 15, 1992 ISD [Nathan] at 12:24 EST Calamus builds up the memory of the entire page at once. On a dot matrix, this requires all of maybe 50K. So as long as you have 50K free, the entire page is sent to your printer at once. From then on, it becomes limited only by the speed of your printer itself. I imagine with Calamus SL many variations will eventually be created and I am adding this entire printer buffer issue onto the list. The old JOB version did a few things not available in the regular Calamus, the most notable being the ability to send multiple documents at one time and go home. :-) Stay tuned for info on the new JOB version. :-) ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 171 Wed Jan 15, 1992 A.VALENT [Mike] at 22:20 EST Of all the things I naively thought I'd never see... A complaint about Calamus's printing speed. Having a 'print to disk' feature would certainly help fill up one's hard drive at 1 meg per page. But then that's what GEnie downloads are for, nez pas? ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 172 Thu Jan 16, 1992 WAYNED. [Wayne] at 19:09 EST Mike, Calamus does print out slow. It's only when you compare it to other DTP programs where it screams along in comparison to them. :-) With a 105 meg HD and a Syquest 44 meg removeable storage space is the least of my worries. Besides I wouldn't keep the output, but simply use the print to disk feature so I could then print out the file from the desktop where a printer spooler/buffer would work. Then I'd trash the file since I still have the document saved. Wayne ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 173 Thu Jan 16, 1992 SANDY.W [RT SysOp] at 22:13 EST Was in the 30's here today. It seems that if I use block start and block end to paste things to the clipboard and then move them, it works fine for a while and then acts up. If I try move only one or two lines it actually cuts to the clipboard the line after the one I want. I can work around it but it seems odd. I'm using 1.09N. If I reboot, the problem seems to go away for a while. Another strange thing was that I deleted a text block by moving it to the clipboard and then dumping it to the garbage. I went on to try do a straight "delete" key press of the text ruler on the next line (absolutely nothing special about it) and got the old fatal internal error message. Tried it twice and had the same thing happen but when I deleleted the text ruler first and then the block there was no problem. Gord ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 175 Fri Jan 17, 1992 ISD [Nathan] at 09:03 EST We have never been entirely satisfied with the internal text editor in Calamus. That is why PKS Write became a reality. It is also one of the reasons we have decided to include PKS Write with the base Calamus SL unit. I'm glad you were able to work around this Gord. Sorry. Sandy...cute but no points cause I'll wager you never got closer to the slopes than in visual range..maybe. :-) Nice workstation Wayne. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 176 Fri Jan 17, 1992 SANDY.W [RT SysOp] at 11:35 EST Nathan - Would you care to bet a copy of SL? (sigh) :-( ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 178 Sun Jan 19, 1992 L.ROCHA1 [Lou Rocha] at 14:25 EST Wayne, it sounds like you DON'T have a speedboard. Therefore, let me tell you a little about my experience with Fast Technology's T-25. When I ask Calamus to print a 1.09 N document, it processes the page and sends the print command in 3 to 10 seconds, depending on how much graphics are on that page. The SLM804 kicks out the first page in 15 seconds, with 4 more copies in less than a minute! Using the Calamus SL demo, the T-25 processes and prints first copies in less than 45 seconds on average. With the re-optimized version of SL that will be released, I would expect SL documents to print just as fast as those created in 1.09N. In addition to printing speed, the T-25 is a lightning bolt at redrawing pages with or without graphics. A truly marvellous enhancement for the ST computer. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 179 Sun Jan 19, 1992 D.SIMMER1 at 20:49 EST Nathan, I have a few questions on the "Print to Disk" option in Calamus... I like to use Calamus for doing designwork. It has the unique ability to draw perfect circles, arcs, etc. when using "thick" lines. All of the drawing programs I have tried either put "nicks" on the circle, or draw them unevenly when using a line thickness greater than 1 pixel. Calamus also allows you to change an objects size or line thickness instantly, without having to redraw everything. When working on a design, I do as much of it as I can in Calamus, print it out, scan it into TouchUp, then do any "pixel by pixel" alterations I need to complete the graphic. Since the scanned image is never as good as the original Calamus creation, I usually end up wasting a lot of time cleaning things up. Not long ago I read a message that said you can use the "Print to Disk" option to save an entire page as an IMG. Just what I was looking for... especially now that I have MegaPaint! Unfortunately, MegaPaint Megabombs itself back to the desktop, and TouchUp won't Touch the resulting IMG file ("Color IMG is not supported at this time"). Even Calamus chokes and dies when trying to read it!! Is there any way of getting the saved "Print to Disk" IMG to load into MegaPaint? Or is there some kind of conversion program that will make the PAGE.IMG file into a "normal" IMG? Any help you can offer (other than teasing me with the DataFormer module ) would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 180 Mon Jan 20, 1992 REALM [Joey] at 00:30 EST D.SIMMER1, Do you have Outline yet? It might eliminate the need for using Touch-Up.:-) Plus when you load it into Calamus it's still a Vector graphic and uneffected by size changing and such. I use it for everything I can and keep Touch-Up for scanning and editing scans. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 181 Mon Jan 20, 1992 ISD [Nathan] at 10:10 EST Joey's suggestion is the most viable one available for you at this time. It is Vector Graphics and naturally Outline Art is totally compatible with Calamus. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 182 Tue Jan 21, 1992 D.SIMMER1 at 02:13 EST Joey, yes I have Outline Art and enjoy it very much. I use it quite often for complex graphic and text manipulation. I then take those CVGs and do the design layout with Calamus. Unfortunately, I find myself needing to make changes/alterations that are not very easy (or possible) with OL or Calamus. That is why I would like to have the entire Calamus document as an IMG... so I can make bit changes with MegaPaint. Nathan, thanks for the quick reply! Does this mean that there is no way of using the "Print to Disk" IMG that Calamus outputs? Outline Art is very useful for much of my work, but I really need the ability to alter the finished designwork as a bit-map. Do you know what sort of format the saved IMG file is in, or any way of converting it? ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 183 Tue Jan 21, 1992 J.COOPER21 at 05:33 EST Any way to convert a CDK to Degas? It would be a great thing if someone put together a chart that had all the different graphic file formats on both axiis and the name of the program that could convert between them at their intersection. But anyway CDK to Degas hi res? Anyone? ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 184 Tue Jan 21, 1992 ISD [Nathan] at 08:33 EST The Dataformer module concept is to allow all kinds of changes between formats but based on Raster to raster, vector to vector. The Auto-trace module, now available, will easily convert your raster to vector. As far as manipulating vector graphics, that is no longer a problem either as the Vector Graphic Editor Module is also done and being released at the same time as SL. That module will allow you to manipulate vector graphics "IN CALAMUS SL" to your hearts content. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 185 Tue Jan 21, 1992 WAYNED. [Wayne] at 21:35 EST Lou, Unfortunately I don't have either an accelerator, nor a laser printer. The time to compose the page isn't my problem, I can live with that. I just wish I had the option of either putting it to a disk file, or through a buffer/spooler instead of waiting (and waiting) for my dot matrix printer. Wayne ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 186 Thu Jan 23, 1992 L.ROCHA1 [Lou Rocha] at 20:32 EST Now I understand. And yes, I remember those days. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 187 Sat Feb 22, 1992 G.JOHANSEN2 [GORD] at 22:10 EST I just had another strange thing happen to me. I'm still using 1.09 since my upgrade has not showed up yet (sigh). While running a file about 400k I was tring to to some fairly extensive search and replace functions for some text. This was proving to be very slow so I had the brilliant idea to take about the first 2/3 of the file out of the editor and put it in a clipboard to see if it would speed things up. Wonder of wonders, it did so I merrily went and did about 2 hours of work. I then put the stuff from the clipboard back where it belonged and saved the file. Unfortunately when I went back to the file, everything that was not in the clipboard section that was pasted back was gone (which was all my work of course). I tried again and after I had pasted the clipboard back to the beginning of the file I scrolled to the end of the editor. FATAL INTERNAL ERROR etc. etc. Is this me or a bug? Needless to say this did not make my day. Gord ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 188 Sun Feb 23, 1992 R.BROWN30 at 04:52 EST D.SIMMER: A while back, you mentioned a problem with color information in an IMG file making further bit editing impossible. The shareware program GEM View by Dieter Fiebelkorn (another smart German), _might_ take care of your problem. GEM View will load a great many ST graphics formats, and produce Degas or IMG files as output. However, the current GEM View _does_ support color XIMG, even in saving. However, I believe the program has flexibility in color selection and compressing color maps. This is truly a must-have graphics viewer/processor for Atari users. I want to print right onto envelopes with my SLM804. I make a pagelayout the size of an envelope. When Calamus prints, it prints on the right side of the manual feed. The SLM804 will only grip the envelope on the left hand side of the manual feed. Is there anyway to fix this without turning frames all over the place? ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 191 Wed Feb 26, 1992 D.A.BRUMLEVE [kidprgs] at 08:02 EST I just hooked up a used SLM804 in order to print from Calamus...I get a great -- quick -- printout -- and then Calamus bombs out. What is wrong. I did a garbage collection before my last attempt, and there were two megs free. I can only print one page at a time, reboot, print another, reboot, ... Any ideas appreciated. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 192 Wed Feb 26, 1992 S.WINICK at 08:17 EST Dorothy, By having 2 megs free, do you mean you're using a 4 meg machine and have 2 megs free after loading everything? If so, you should have plenty of memory (in your computer ;-). If you only have 2 megs of RAM total in the computer, you may be running out of memory. If that's not the problem, check all your connections to the SLMC804 laser printer interface. It's also possible that the SLMC804 may be malfunctioning. If you have someone nearby with an Atari laser printer, try borrowing their interface and try again. If everything works properly, you'll know that's the cause of the problem. I've seen a few systems malfunction similarly due to a faulty SLMC804. Replacements are available from Atari; and I believe we also have at least one in stock as well if you need one quickly. Sheldon (Computer STudio - Asheville, NC) ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 193 Wed Feb 26, 1992 D.A.BRUMLEVE [kidprgs] at 09:00 EST Yes, Sheldon, I do mean that there are 2 of 4 megs available, even after Calamus and my document are loaded. I'll look at the cables...it doesn't help that we are sans manual here; maybe I can borrow a friend's while we get it going. Thanks for the interface tip. We'll check it out. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 194 Wed Feb 26, 1992 D.A.BRUMLEVE [kidprgs] at 11:16 EST Sheldon, actually, with experience I've discovered that there are two symptoms of trouble: (1) the bombing upon printout (although the printing is successful) and (2) a difficulty in convincing my hard disk to boot up with the interface connected to it (succeeds perhaps 1 time out of 3). I have to actually turn the computer _off_ to reboot as well. A pal with a manual and an interface will be enlisted tonight for some tinkering. In the meantime, with my hd apparently at risk and containing all sorts of stuff I haven't backed up (!), I have disconnected the SLM. Did go ahead and do the load-printout-reboot-load... thing 28 times to print the first draft of my new program's manual, though. Even with this silly routine, it's faster than printint to my DJ. Somebody back a few messages had set up his envelope DTP on the opposite side of the page than the printer needed. Did you try choosing INVERT from the PRINT dialog (this is in 1.09N)? That ought to work. ------------ Category 16, Topic 2 Message 195 Wed Feb 26, 1992 D.A.BRUMLEVE [kidprgs] at 14:43 EST Um, never mind! A helpful Atari employee suggested that I put the laser printer FIRST in the DMA lineup, and now Calamus is humming along, printing without bombs. ;-) Guess a manual would have come in handy. Kyle...Simply create a rotated text frame, rotate it to 90 degrees and insert your required text. Then select manual on your printer and print. You WILL be required to turn one single frame though. Glad to hear your printing problems are now resolved Dorothy. Thanks for lending a hand Sheldon. I was not surprised to read the fix. :-) Nice price for the SLM804. By the way, the real fix would have been add a 7407 to the interrupt line of the SLMC804. I'll check and see if your fix has been done, Nathan. I still seem to be having a little tiny bit of trouble getting the hd to boot; never had this before with this hd. It was booting 1 time out of 3 before, now it's more like 9 times out of 10 (doing a lot of booting today!). Anyway, the joyful part is that I can set a whole manual to print, walk away, and come back after a snack to find it finished! ;-) Amazing. Nothing short of it. Thanks for checking in from Germany!
