Mega STe Throttle Cable ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ (c)1992 NecroWare Development ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Yeah, I hate it too.... All my PC owning friends (the scurvy dogs) can change the speed of their machines by running a small program, or (the REALLY low dirt bags) with a hot-key press. On my MegaSTe, it's a little different -- In fact it isn't even possible unless the General Setup CPX is present. Alas, the CPX is at LEAST 6 mouse clicks, and, unless you have RAM to burn with resident CPX's, also a disk access --- YUK! Another hitch is if you run a different OS, such as TOS 1.0, for the occasional unruly program, you are stuck at 8 Mhz. What a bummer eh? While to solve the vile problem (and to prevent those PC worms from having even the tiniest thing to dig me about), I present the two included programs: 8_MHZ.PRG 16_MHZ.PRG As you may have guessed, 8_mhz.prg sets the MSTE to 8 Mhz, and 16_mhz.prg drops in the turbo. Usage is simple, run the appropriate program. At my last check, they were a mere 738 bytes long, Not bad for being written in Laser C. If I'm not mistaken, it should be possible to set up HotWire to run these babies off a hot key. (I don't own it -- yet, so I can't be sure.) Since I haven't dished out for the dev. kit yet, the speed settings were obtained by tracing the General Setup CPX (Oooooh, LOTSA FUN!!!!!), So these programs should function properly, however, as usual, I can't be held liable for any problems you may have. These programs are *ShareWare*, which means, if you find them useful, you are morally obligated to pay for them, otherwise, the guilt you suffer could haunt you forever, possibly preventing you from spending more time in front of your ST, where you would have developed the solution to world peace. But, because you didn't, anarchy instead resulted, and civilization as we know it ceased to exist. I sure wouldn't want to have that on my conscience. On the positive side, the shareware fee is light -- As always, I'll accept cash, but for these programs, I'd be happy with a postcard or a couple bucks, GEnie Gift-Of-Time. YOU decide what they are worth, but remember if you use them, they are worth something! Don't be fooled by their small size -- Tracing a CPX is no small feat, and keeping a C program under 1k does require some contortions. In short, a fair amount of work went into them, please remember that!! Enjoy!! -Ken Schafer 1-10-92 NecroWare Development Box 688 Clark Mills, New York, 13321-0688 GEnie: [KSCHAFER.4] Delphi: KSchafer
