Atari STe (TOS1.6) users, you get this bug too? First I'd like to say thanks to Robert Bergeski for uploading his RUNBUG.TXT file (file #16563 on GEnie). It just helped me in taking another look at the annoying bug with TOS 1.6 that gives the PRINT, SHOW,CANCEL alert box when you double-click on a .PRG,.TOS,.TTP file. I've been puzzled over this bug for about a week now. After owning the STe (still 1meg) for about a month now. I've also heard this bug sometimes appears with TOS 1.4 also? If so this might be a temporary fix for TOS 1.4 users too. I'm sure if you've run into it you know what it is! Though I did get the same results as Robert by using his example, I've come to a similar but different conclusion to the cause of this bug!! The reason I checked into this more:(I was ready to give up, And curse Atari in my grief.) But I was getting the bug by double- clicking on a filename with 5 characters in the filename (ex: ULTRA. PRG) which was in a folder called ULTRA. The bug will appear with or without the STEFIX installed (I know that isn't suppose to correct this bug anyway, but I was hopeful!) Also, it will appear from either drive A: or B: and I'd assume from hard drive too. Also note that after already having the disks directory open the bug doesn't seem to appear as much, but usually everytime when the directory is first opened! OK, My ideas/conclusions: If you'll notice my above example, there is 5 characters in both the filename and the folder name. When double-clicking on ULTRA.PRG in the following example: A:\ULTRA\ULTRA.PRG there's the bug. OK, Now try 6 characters in the folder name and 4 characters in the filename in that folder... Double-click on ULTR.PRG. A:\ULTRA1\ULTR.PRG There's the bug. OK, Now try 8 totally different characters in the folder name and 2 in the filename in that folder... Now double-click on 12.PRG. A:\12345678\12.PRG There's the bug again!! As long as you have a total of 10 characters in both the folder name and filename there's the bug! I've tried different programs also. *IF you find this bug annoying you: Just add one character to your folder name or filename, that should do it! I think this is it! I'd really like to hear any feedback from other STe users on this and hear what you find! Robert, let me know what you think. I'm really glad there's others out there that are looking into things like this and glad there's a way to communicate our findings! I also agree this is one fast operating system. And hope there's a fix or upgrade to this otherwise great TOS in the future! Well let me know if this works for you!! Or if you even got the bug? Jim Keho 9/20/90 MAIL - GEnie: J.KEHO
