Documentation for STACYOFF.ACC & STACYOFF.PRG The STacy Screen Killer! Version 1.0 9/26/93 This little program and it's accompanying accessory were inspired by the STACYBLK.EXT Extend-O-Save module for CodeHead's Warp9 Software Accelerator. That module is great when you are using the built-in screen, but many people can't stand the screen (myself included) and use an external monitor whenever feasible. To have the internal screen on as well seems not only redundant but also wears the screen out that much faster. Note that STACYOFF.PRG & STACYOFF.ACC are NOT replacements for a screen saver. They simply allow you to turn the STacy screen on and off whenever you desire. The OS turns the screen off if you have a color monitor plugged into the STacy, so you only need to use this for a monochrome monitor. Why they didn't think to turn off the internal monitor whenever you have _any_ monitor plugged in is something we will probably never know (and probably wouldn't want to if we did.) The PRG can be renamed with a .TOS extender and run from the deskop, however the most convenient method is to simply place it in the AUTO folder and have it turn off the screen at boot-up. The program doesn't have to be run in any particular order and does not permanently use any memory as it removes itself after doing the deed. There is a built-in 3 second wait that allows you to abort if you want. To abort, simply hit at the prompt. As the PRG _only_ turns the screen OFF, be careful about running it from the AUTO folder (especially for hard drive users.) For those times you aren't using an external monitor, it might be better to disable it with an AUTO folder setup program such as Charlie Johnson's (CodeHead) Desk Manager. If you wish to turn the screen back on, you can either reboot or run the ACC version. The accessory allows you to toggle it ON and OFF but doesn't do anything until you tell it to. You can either place the accessory on the root directory of your boot disk, or load it into an accessory management utility like CodeHead's MultiDesk Deluxe. As it reads the status every time you call it up, it does _not_ have to be resident in memory at all times. You can run it from MultiDesk Deluxe as an MDX accessory and save a little memory. (Sometimes, every byte counts.) This is FREEWARE, so feel free to distribute them to anyone who might find them useful, as long as you include this documentation, as well. THE OBLIGATORY CAVEATS It _seems_ that no ill effects occur if you try this on machines other than the STacy, but I haven't tried it on the TT or Falcon, so I can't be absolutely sure. Needless to say, it doesn't turn off their screens. Anyway, because it's intended exclusively for the STacy, I didn't feel there was any real reason to be that thorough. As always, Mr. User, should you decide to accept these programs, the Secretary (that's me) will disavow any knowledge of your actions (and will not be held responsible for any damage to equipment or loss of data either directly or indirectly related to the use or misuse of these programs.) ______________________________________________________________________________ By the way, there is a nice side effect of turning off the screen: It's quieter! It turns out that the STacy screen has a pretty annoying 15k squeal that you don't really notice until it's gone. Enjoy! Gregory A. Whelchel 9/26/93
