[A] OVERVIEW
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This document contains information on the CyReL Serial Mouse Utilities and
device drivers that enhance the performance of your ATARI system.

A utility program supports the operation of the computer by providing system
management capabilities. It extends the scope of the features provided by the
built-in operating system, making your working environment more responsive and
comfortable to use. A device driver is software that controls and communicates
directly with system hardware, hardware expansion modules and other
peripherals.

With the CyReL Serial Mouse Manager software you can do the following:

= Customize and enhance your system.

= Take advantage of industry standard high resolution serial mice
compatible with the MS-Mouse or PC-Mouse format.

= Use any of the built-in serial ports.

= Advanced mouse speed control features including ballistic response,
dynamic speed regulation and mouse resolution compensation.

= Use any graphics tablet compatible with the Summagraphics MM series.

= Improve performance of your operating system and interaction accuracy
       with your application programs.

= Configure your system input devices for optimum performance.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[B] About the Software
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The CyReL Serial Mouse Driver and the Serial Mouse manager are included on
this disk. The installation of the driver and the utility will not interfere
with the behaviour of the original ATARI (or ATARI compatible) mouse. After
the installation of the software, either the serial or the original mouse may
be used at any time. Throughout this document, serial mouse may either be
considered a MS-Mouse compatible serial mouse, a MSC compatible mouse or a
Summagraphics MM series graphic tablet or compatible product emulating the
operation of a mouse.

This release is a demo version only. The package is being distributed as
shareware. Refer to section [G] for more information on how to order the full
edition. Licensing agreements available.

The software can be installed in any system supporting these requirements:

     = ATARI TOS1.2 or later
= at least one free RS-232 port supporting up to 9600 baud.
     = minimum screen resolution: 320x200
     = DB-25 25-pin to DB-9 9-pin RS-232 adapter in case your system does
not feature any 9-pin serial port required by most of the mice.
(Note: some serial mouse vendors include such interface adapters)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[C] How to Install the Serial Mouse Driver
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Copy the SERMOUSE.PRG file into the AUTO folder of your boot drive.

NOTES: The SERMOUSE.PRG file can be executed at any time. However it must
reside in the AUTO folder in case you intend to permanently install the
accompaning CYRELSMM.ACC accessory!

The driver features a built-in mouse accelerator and screen saver. Thus no
other screen timers or accelerator programs might be necessary. Disable or
delete any such programs in your AUTO folder.

Make sure the SERMOUSE.PRG program will be executed after any other AUTO
folder program that may change the configuration or system usage of your
serial ports.

Programs in your AUTO folder are executed in their physical order. To view the
order of the files in your AUTO folder use either one of the many available
public domain AUTO folder sort programs or do the following:

From your GEM desktop menu, select 'No Sort' (not available in some older TOS
versions) and 'Show as Text'. Open the AUTO folder of your boot drive. You
should now be able to verify the order in which your AUTO folder programs will
be executed. If you need to change the order of these files, use one of the
mentioned sort programs or follow these simple steps:

    Note:
If you like to take precautions, make a copy of your AUTO folder on any
of your hard disk drives or on floppy disk, then continue with step 1.

1. Create a new folder on your boot drive. Example: 'NEWAUTO'

2. Copy all files of your old AUTO folder into the new folder in the
order they should be executed, copying the SERMOUSE.PRG after any
program affecting the serial ports. If you are using the CyReL M16-1280
True Color High Resolution Graphic Cards, make sure to copy the
    SERMOUSE.PRG after (!) the CM16_VIP.PRG file.

3. Delete your old AUTO folder.

4. Rename the 'NEWAUTO' (or the name you have choosen for the folder)
    into 'AUTO'.

The installation of the SERMOUSE.PRG during the boot process can be blocked by
simultaneously pressing the 'left-SHIFT' and 'right-SHIFT' keys. A question
will be displayed, giving the user the option to continue or abort the
installation.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[D] How to Install the Serial Mouse Manager
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The CyReL Serial Mouse Manager can be either used as:

(1) a permanently installed accessory,
(2) as a temporary installed accessory or
(3) as a normal GEM program.

(1) Installing the Mouse Manager as a permanently installed accessory:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Copy the CYRELSMM.ACC file into the root directory of your boot drive. The
order of the *.ACC files is not relevant. However if you installed any other
accessories or CPX modules that change the configuration and/or operating
modes of your serial ports, either disable the accessories or follow these
simple steps:

1. Run all of these accessories (like the CONTROL.ACC or MODEM.CPX module)

2. Configure the port you intend to use for the serial mouse as follows:

                      1200 Baud
                         7 Data bits
                         1 Stop bit
No parity for a MS-Mouse compatible mouse
or
                      1200 Baud
                         8 Data bits
                         1 Stop bit
No Parity for a PC-Mouse compatible mouse
or
                      9600 Baud
                         8 Data bits
                         1 Stop bit
Odd Parity for a Summagraphics MM series tablet

3. If possible, save this new serial port configuration.

Reset your system to re-boot all the accessories, run the serial mouse driver
and initialize the serial mouse utility.

NOTE: For more convenience, make sure to copy the SERMOUSE.PRG file into your
AUTO folder (see section [C]) if you intend to permanently install the CyReL
Serial Mouse Manager.

(2) Installing the Mouse Manager as a temporary installed accessory:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This mode requires the presence of an accessory manager like CHAMELEON from
Karsten Isakovic or MultiDesk Deluxe from Charles F. Johnson. Follow the
instructions included with these programs.

(3) Using the Mouse Manager as a *.PRG file:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Copy the CYRELSMM.PRG file into any folder on your hard disk. The program will
display a warning in case it cannot locate the SERMOUSE.PRG.

NOTE: Both programs are necessary to allow the proper function of the serial
mouse driver and the utility. If you do not wish to install the SERMOUSE.PRG
in the AUTO folder, always run the SERMOUSE.PRG first, then run the
CYRELSMM.PRG .

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[E] How to Use the Serial Mouse Manager
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you are reading this document from within an editor, install the
CYRELSMM.ACC file as an accessory and call up the Mouse Manager for an
interactive tutorial session.

THE MAIN MENU PAGE:

The main menu of the Mouse Manager can be divided into three sections:

1. the Screen Saver section
2. the Threshold/Mouse Port section and
3. the Control Buttons section

1. The Screen Saver
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Screen savers or timers help to preserve the cathode ray tube of your monitor.
Prolonged display of a steady image can cause a 'burn-in' of the actual image
into the surface of the screen resulting in ghosted images, reduced clarity
and annoying patterns.

Screen timers avoid such situations by closely monitoring your mouse and
keyboard activities and measuring the time delays between such inputs. If
there has been no user interaction after a certain pre-defined time, the
screen saver either blanks the screen or automatically changes the display
contents to prevent the described undesireable effects. The screen timer
restores the original display contents as soon as the user continues to use
the keyboard or mouse.

The screen saver function implemented in the CyReL Mouse Manager first
switches the display to dark blue (or reverse video for monochrome) after the
user defined screen timer delay has expired and then continues to flash the
display using the value set by the screen timer flash interval.

This function has been implemented to remind the user of the 'dormant' state
of his system and enabling him to distinguish this wait phase from an idle
running monitor.

If you wish to enable or disable the screen timer feature of the Mouse
Manager, click on the appropriate check-box. The ATARI monitor icon and check-
box controls the screen timer for the normal ATARI graphics/video output, the
CYRELL M16 icon and check-box controls the screen timer for the CyReL M16-1280
True Color High Resolution Graphic Cards. The M16 screen timer option is
disabled if there is no M16 card installed in your system.

Two parameters are being used to control the screen timer:

                               DELAY and FLASH.
Both can range from 2 to 999 seconds.
The pre-set values are 120 seconds for DELAY
and 5 second intervals for FLASH.

To change the values either click on the arrow buttons or on the parameter
value itself. If you clicked on the value box, a new dialog will appear and
you may define the appropriate parameter more accurately.

2. The Threshold/Mouse Port Selection
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This section allows you to define the 'agility' or responsiveness of your
original mouse and the serial mouse. Since you can define a mouse speed
translation table you have to tell the mouse driver when to use the table and
when not.

There are two parameters associated with this function:

                        the ATARI mouse THRESHOLD and
                         the serial mouse THRESHOLD.
Both can range from 0 to 99 timer units.
The pre-set values are 8 timer units for both parameters.

To change the values either click on the arrow buttons or on the parameter
value itself. If you clicked on the value box, a new dialog will appear and
you may define the appropriate parameter more accurately.

The mouse driver uses a timer to determine the duration between two
consecutive mouse movements. The value obtained by measuring the pauses in the
mouse movements is then compared against the user-defined THRESHOLD parameter.

The mouse speed translation table will be used to adjust the speed of the
mouse if the measured pause is smaller than the value set by the corresponding
parameter. The translation table can be defined by the user. Refer to the
OPTIONS MENU PAGE description for more details.

Should the measured pause exceed the THRESHOLD parameter, no modification of
the mouse speed takes place. To completely disable the speed translation
feature, set the corresponding THRESHOLD parameter to zero.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                           THRESHOLD=0        no speed translation

pause between movements > THRESHOLD no speed translation

pause between movements <= THRESHOLD speed translation enabled
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Try to set the THRESHOLD parameters to different values and experiment with
them. It is best to set them individually according to your own habits and
level of comfort. Go to the OPTIONS menu page to change the mouse speed
translation table.

Further you can select the RS-232 port you intend to use for the serial mouse:

                         use the MOUSE PORT selector
to define the RS-232 port for the mouse.
To change the port, click on the arrow buttons.

The following abbreviations are used to describe the ports:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    ID | Port | System
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    M1 | Modem 1 | 1040, MEGA, MEGA STE, TT030
    M2 | Modem 2 | MEGA STE, TT030, Falcon 030
    S1 | Serial 1 | MEGA STE, TT030
    S2 | Serial 2 | TT030
cc | current channel* | MEGA STE, TT030, Falcon 030
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

* = Selects the channel that is mapped in as the current serial port.
Use the MODEM.CPX to define/change the current port.

NOTE: The Mouse Manager will report an error if an attempt is made to use any
invalid serial ports on machines that do not support the specified channel
and/or the related operating system functions. However if a TOS upgrade
package has been installed that supports more channels than the actual number
of ports present in that particular system (e.g. TOS2.06 upgrade in a 1040)
the operating system will automatically re-route all request for higher
channels to the existing ones.

3. The Control Buttons
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are four control buttons available:

                               the SAVE button,
                              the OPTIONS button
                           the OK and CANCEL button

Click on the SAVE button to save your selected configuration.

Click on the OPTIONS button to change the mouse speed translation table,
the mouse format selection and other features.

Click on the OK button to update the mouse driver and activate all changes.

Click on the CANCEL button to exit without updating any parameters. All values
will be reset to the settings at the last start of the program/accessory.

THE SAVE CONFIGURATION MENU PAGE:

The SAVE option has not been included in this demo release. Users are
presented with the instructions on how to order the full edition.

THE OPTIONS MENU PAGE:

The options menu of the Mouse Manager is divided into five sections:

1. the Mouse Speed Translation Table display,
2. the Mouse Speed Translation Table parameters section,
3. the Mouse Format Selector,
4. the Mouse Function Features section, and
5. the Control Buttons

1. The Mouse Speed Translation Table Display
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The right hand side of the menu shows the mouse speed curve. It depicts how
your mouse will react to your movements. The pre-set values are configured to
give you twice the speed on the screen than of your actual mouse movements.
Every time you run the Mouse Manager, the mouse response curve is set
automatically to this configuration regardless of your actual selection. This
feature has been added to provide an accurate mouse response, even if the
user-defined mouse speed parameters make it uncomfortable to use the it. It is
important to remember that your own current or new selection will become
active as soon as you leave the Mouse manager.

2. The Mouse Speed Translation Table Parameters
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are three parameters that control the mouse speed/response:

                           The MOUSE DPI parameter,
ranging from 0 to 2400 dpi.

                        The MOUSE DYNAMICS parameter,
                         ranging from 0.125 to 4.000.

                        The MOUSE BALLISTIC parameter,
                         ranging from 0.020 to 2.000.

Use the DPI parameter to compensate for mouse or tablet resolutions beyond the
500 dpi range. This parameter influences both the dynamics and ballistics
value by decreasing the overall mouse speed response. DPI values below 500 dpi
have no effect. Using the arrow buttons, you can increase or decrease the
parameter in steps of 100 dpi.

The DYNAMICS parameter determines the basic mouse response. Setting both the
dynamics and ballistic parameter to 1.00 will have the same result as setting
the THRESHOLD values (MAIN MENU) to 0. With both parameters set to 1.00 (and
the dpi parameter set to less than 500) you will get a linear response curve.
This corresponds to an unmodified mouse speed translation. The mouse reacts on
screen exactly in the same way as you move it.

Increasing the DYNAMIC parameter beyond 1.00 will speed up the mouse.
Accordingly, decreasing the value will slow down the mouse. Using the arrow
buttons, you can increase or decrease the parameter value in steps of 0.125 .

Through the use of the BALLISTIC parameter you can define whether your mouse
should respond faster to slow movements and adequately to faster moves or for
more precise control, make slow and normal mouse movements slower while
speeding up fast movements. The effect of this parameter is best experienced
through a small number of test runs. Watch the mouse speed curve to estimate
the resulting effect. Using the arrow buttons, you can increase or decrease
the parameter in steps of 0.020 .

3. The Mouse Format Selector
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The current release features three different operating modes:

                                MS-Mouse mode,
                              PC-Mouse mode and
                   Summagraphics MM graphics tablets mode.

To change the operating mode, click on the FORMAT box. A pop-up menu will
appear displaying the available mouse format emulations. Simply click on one
of the highlighted modes. Note: Your selection will not become active
immediately. To change to the new mode, go back to the MAIN MENU and exit the
Mouse Manager.

4. The Mouse Function Features
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Below the Mouse FORMAT selector, you will find three icons labelled:

                               Mouse Button SWAP,
                         Configure Graphics TABLET and
                       Configure VIRTUAL Resolution Modes.

Click on the SWAP icon to exchange the mouse button functions.

In SUMMA MM mode the cursor keys 1 & 2 emulate the left & right
mouse buttons respectively. Button 3 can be used instead of pressing the
'left' & 'right' button simultaneously. SWAP reverses the function
assignments.

When using a Summagraphics stylus, the tip switch emulates the 'left' mouse
button and the barrel switch emulates the 'right' mouse button. SWAP reverses
the function assignments.

[I] NOTES
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The communication format used for the graphic tablets is specific to the
Summagraphics MM series. Other Summagraphics or compatible products have
similar formats, but their contents may vary. In case of communication or
compatibility problems, configure the hardware jumpers of the Summagraphics
tablet to: FIXED BAUD RATE of 9600, ODD PARITY enabled and PACKED BINARY
report format (factory defaults). Refer to the MM series technical reference
manual in case you have to change any of these settings.

The MM961 is being used in 'vertical orientation'. No tablet size adjustment
options are available in this demo version. Cursor and stylus keys 1 & 2
emulate the left & right mouse buttons respectively. Button 3 can be used
instead of pressing the 'left' & 'right' button simultaneously. The pressure/
pen_force parameter is not available in this demo version.
