REMINDER V1.0 November 17,1991 By Manfred Sierke, Ottawa, Canada REMINDER Reminder is a program to ensure that you don't miss upcoming birthdays, anniversaries, or any other type of special events which could slip your mind. Just place Reminder in the Auto Folder of your boot disk and whenever you bootup the computer it'll display any special event scheluded for that date. The program contains an event for each day of the year plus about 50 holidays(Christmas, thanksgiving, etc) which will be automatically displayed for you plus any events which have been flagged for advance warning. After displaying these the program will wait 5 seconds before continuing. If you need a little longer just press the 'help' key and the program will pause until you press another key. REM_EDIT To be useful you'll need to personalize the data in Reminder to show the dates that are of significance to you. That's where Rem_edit comes in. First thing to do is select the load data button and you'll be asked to locate Reminder using a file selector. Once the data is loaded the event for each date will be displayed in the data box. To change the date move the curser to the date line and type in the new date (mm/dd). When you move the curser back down to the data lines you'll see what's on for the date displayed. Backspace, delete, curser keys, insert, etc all work as you would expect them to. Escape clears the line. Control-c centers the text on the line for you. Items can be flagged for advance warning by putting an exclamation mark at the beginning of the line and optionally followed by a value of 1-30. (7 is the default if no value is given) eg: "! John's Birthday Today " would be displayed 7 days in advance. "!12 Fred's Birthday " would be displayed 12 days in advance. Only the line flagged would be shown so if you want both lines displayed you'd have to flag them both. The !(and value) will not appear in the actual display itself. Remember that ! must be the first character so center the line first before putting in the !. ST ALMANAC As mentioned the program contains about 50 holidays such as Christmas, Thanksgiving etc. This too can be personalized if you use a program I wrote earlier called St Almanac (a calendar/almanac program). You can have Reminder read the 'dates.cal' file created by St Almanac for it's list of holidays and special events to display after the date. The easiest way to do this is to put a copy of the 'dates.cal' in the root directory of your boot disk. Then when Reminder runs it'll use the holidays in 'dates.cal' instead of it's own list of holidays. If you have a hard drive an even better way to do this is to use a disk/file editor and change Reminder to locate the 'dates.cal' file. You'll find the path of the file it searches for at $30. Just change this to the correct path for your purposes. eg: as is at $30: DATES.CAL followed by nulls - change to E:\ALMANAC\DATES.CAL [null-00] or whatever and you're all set. THAT'S ALL Obviously to work properly Reminder should be in the auto folder after a program which sets the date/time. If you use one of those programs that compresses files Reminder will work just fine but remember that you'll have to decompress it in order to use Rem_edit. CREDITS If you find this program useful feel free to use it or pass on to others. If you're feeling kind and generous a small contribution would of course be appreciated (say about $5).
