PLACEMENT --------- ShowStuff should be kept in the root directory of your boot disk, ie: C:\*.* or A:\*.* . USAGE ONE --------- Run SHOWSTxx.PRG. When the fileselector appears, select a file. An alert will appear. Select TEXT to view a text file, PRINT to print a file, PIC to view a picture file...or CANCEL to exit. USAGE TWO --------- Install SHOWSTxx.PRG as an application. When you run it as such, the aforementioned alert appears with the name of the installed file on the top of the screen. Please refer to your Atari owners manual if you are uncertain as to how an application becomes installed. USAGE THREE ----------- You will need a word processor capable of saving a file in ASCII format. Load your DESKTOP.INF file. About the fourth line from the bottom should be... #G 03 FF *.APP@ @ Directly _ABOVE_ this line you will need to enter the line... #G 03 FF C:\SHOWSTxx.PRG@ *.*@ The "*.*" tells the ST to run SHOWSTxx.PRG when ANY file, not listed BELOW this line, is double-clicked. This is how SHOWSTxx.PRG will trick TOS ! SAMPLE.INF is an example of what the file should look like. PICTURE FILES ------------- SHOWSTxx can display either low, medium or high resolution NEOchrome pictures, low, medium or high resolution Degas (PI?) pictures of at least 32000 bytes or low and medium resolution SPeCtrum (SPC) pictures. Low and medium resolution pictures may be viewed in either low or medium resolution. TOS 2.05+ BUG ------------- TOS versions 2.05+ try to reload desk accessories when a resolution switch is detected. If you have one of these TOS versions you should ONLY view a picture in the resolution for which it was intended. RELOADING DESKTOP/NEWDESK.INF FILES ----------------------------------- If ShowStuff is installed as an application, hold down the [ALTERNATE] key while double-clicking on a DESKTOP/NEWDESK.INF file. This tells ShowStuff that you wish to load an alternate desktop setup. The [ALTERNATE] key must remained pressed until the first alert appears. You may also hold down the [CONTROL] key while double-clicking on a DESKTOP/NEWDESK.INF file. ShowStuff will then reload the new setup and rewrite the desktop/newdesk information file. No alerts will appear. The [CONTROL] key should remain pressed until you return to the desktop. If ShowSTuff is NOT installed as an application, hold down the [CONTROL] or [ALTERNATE] key while selecting the desktop/newdesk information file from the fileselector. DISAPPEARING ICONS ------------------ "Usage Three" above causes icons to disappear from within a GEM window. It does not seem to have any other adverse effects. The desktop icons will not be affected. You need merely select "View As Text" in order to see the directory within the GEM window. PRINTING -------- ShowStuff sends print commands to the PRINTER port. If your printer is connected to the MODEM port you will need to use the redirection software which comes with these printers to redirect output to the PRINTER port. DISTRIBUTION ------------ Starting with v.2.01, ShowStuff is Freeware...and NOT public domain ! You are free to copy and distribute ShowStuff as long as the files SHOWST21.PRG / SHOWST21.TXT / SAMPLE.INF / OTHERTTL.LZH are included, are NOT modified in ANY way and NO FEE of ANY type is incurred upon the recipient for the files _themselves_.
