Having completed the development, programming and documentation of the program, the author places the software on the networks where it can be distributed freely and without charge, and where users can obtain a FREE copy of it. Potential buyers can therefore try the software thoroughly without having to spend $50 or more for poor quality software or for a program they don't like or don't need. In the end, users benefit from low-cost quality software by bypassing costly middlemen and avoiding extra costs required for fancy packaging, advertising, and other expensive stuff. The final decision rests upon the user who, having had hands-on experience of the software, is fully able to make an enlightened choice as to whether to keep and use the software, and thus benefit from the programmer's work. Keep that in mind. I decided to take advantage of my thorough knowledge of the ST and my programming expertise to create a text editor that would be fast, easy to use, and answer the needs of most Atarians. TitEd is not the first text editor available on electronic boards. But I find that those currently available leave much to be desired, especially when offered as shareware. In my view, software marketed as shareware must be of truly superior quality, since the user will be paying for it. Most of the text editors I have seen to date are slow, or, when not so, make use of illegal calls and techniques that compromise their compatibility with newer machines in the ST line (TT, Falcon, etc), or with STs equipped with custom video cards that boost their resolution. TitEd is written in a totally "legal" manner, and is therefore absolutely independent of the screen resolution. As a bonus, it is very fast. How can ST software be perfectly legal and fast? Simple; the programmer must focus all his talent and energies on writing smart routines that redraw only the very essential parts of the display! TitEd has been designed to be easy to use, and great care has gone into the user interface. Being myself very critical of the work of others, I am uncompromising when I judge my own. TitEd is certainly not yet perfect, but your support and contribution will help it on its way there. I value your suggestions and comments; they will guide my efforts in making TitEd a worthwhile and reliable tool for you. It is entirely in your hands. If I find support and demand for TitEd, I will continue to work on it and improve TitEd v1.00. I already have a list of features I wish to add to future versions: ๚ A customizable configuration file ๚ Printer drivers that will allow printing of graphic characters ๚ Improved printer management (page numbering, etc.) ๚ Automatic indentation ๚ Block shifting to the left or to the right ๚ Loading of several document at the same time ๚ And a million other little things... TitEd v1.00 may be used as an application or as an accessory. To use it as an accessory, simply name it TITED.ACC, and place it on your boot unit. To use TitEd as an application, name it TITED.PRG. Unfortunately, memory management by accessories is quite different than that of applications and is somewhat limited, largely because of of the inflexibility of GEMDOS. Thus, when TitEd runs as an accessory, memory available for text is limited to 64 Kb, and the number of lines is restricted to 2048. Future versions of TitEd will allow users to set those parameters to their liking. TitEd works in a GEM environment, using a window, dialog boxes and menus. When TitEd runs as an application, a minimal menu bar appears at the top of the Desktop. TitEd uses GEM dialog boxes. When a dialog box appears, the mouse is trapped inside the box. To leave a dialog box and abort the current operation, simply click on the close button at the upper left corner of the box. TitEd makes extensive use of pop-up menus. Pop-up menus operate like regular GEM menus, can be used the same way, but may appear anywhere on the Desktop. To make things even more user-friendly, TitEd pop-up menus can operate like Mac menus. The state of the left mouse button when the menu is called determines the way the menu will function. At the top of the window is a range of icons which provide access to the many options offered by TitEd. Clicking on an icon will display its menu, revealing the functions associated with the icon. Since TitEd runs in a standard GEM window, it offers all the regular features that come with GEM windows. Horizontal and vertical scroll bars allow you to move quickly and easily within your text. However, TitEd's scroll bars offer something more than ordinary GEM scroll bars. First, double-clicking on an up or down scroll arrow will take you in a blink to the start or the end of your document, respectively. Secondly, when you move the scroll box by dragging it, your text scrolls through the window in real time, at the same rate as your dragging action, a feat totally unknown to ordinary GEM scroll bars. If you prefer the way GEM scroll bars usually work, simply double-click in the scroll box. A menu pops up, offering you a choice between "Normal" and "Real Time" modes. The action of scroll bars and arrows do not change the position of the cursor within the text. Characters entered at the keyboard are inserted at the cursor position. If a block of text is currently selected, the character will replace the whole block of selected text. [Backspace] erases the character to the left of the cursor. [Delete] erases the character at the cursor position. To delete a line, use the [Control]+[Delete] shortcut. A [Shift]+[Delete] combination allows you to erase text from the cursor position to the end of line. A block of text may be easily erased by simply pressing [Backspace] or [Delete] while the selection is highlighted. TitEd allows the use of accented and other special characters. To insert a special character in your text, press the [Esc] key. A dialog box appears, from which you choose a character by clicking on it. TitEd makes selecting blocks of text simple and convenient. You start by left-clicking on one of the end-points of the block and then, keeping the left mouse button pressed, slide the mouse pointer over to the other end-point. Your text changes to reverse video as it is being selected. This drag selection method can even extend to text beyond the window display. When the mouse pointer reaches the bottom or top limit of the text area, the document starts scrolling in the appropriate direction, allowing you to select as large a block as you want. To enhance flexibility and provide total convenience, even more selection methods have been made available. Double-clicking on a word allows instant selection of that word. If a drag selection starts with a double-click, the selection will continue on a word, rather than a character, basis. Clicking on a line while holding the [Alternate] key allows the complete line to be selected. If [Alternate] is down at the beginning of a drag selection, then complete lines will be selected rather than single characters. Clicking with the [Shift] key pressed will select the block of text between the text cursor and the clicking point. If a selection is already present, the [Shift]+[Click] combination will simply extend the current limits of the selection. The selection mode (character, word or line) in force at the time will apply as well. Lastly, typing will quickly select the entire document. The [Undo] key is your way out of trouble: with a few exceptions, it will let you take back almost every action. You will even be able to alternate between 2 versions of your document by using [Undo] often. Since [Undo] is active at all times (even when a new document has just been loaded!), it is easier to point out those few times when [Undo] can't pull you out of trouble: - After a "Replace all" action with the Search and Replace function, [Undo] can only rebuild the last replacement. - With the "Auto reformat" option on, [Undo] is not able to cancel the last character typed at the keyboard. - When you reformat some or all of your document, [Undo] cannot restore the previous state of the text. - When TitEd works as an accessory, launching or quitting an application will destroy the content of its [Undo] buffer. - If memory is insufficient, [Undo] may be simply unable to work. Function keys F1 to F9 are reserved for markers. Markers serve to remember positions in a text, to which you wish to come back later. To assign a marker to a function key, you simply move the text cursor to where you want to leave a mark and you press [Shift] along with the function key [F1..F9] you want to use for the marker. To return to the marked position, you then simply hit the associated function key. F10 cannot be assigned by the user. It serves to jump either to the current cursor position or to the beginning of a selected block of text. Most useful to return to the cursor position or the start of a block after having moved through the text by way of the scrolling bars and arrows, which never modify the cursor position. The Disk menu is used for reading and writing files on disk. Allows you to clear memory in order to start a new document. With a checkmark before this option, all operations that make use of the clipboard will store data in a GEM disk file (SCRAP.TXT). Since the GEM clipboard is supported by many applications and accessories, it is a convenient and standardized way to exchange text between TitEd and applications (or accessories) that make use of this GEM feature. It presents a major drawback however: disk accesses makes it is slow. In its first version, TitEd does not yet offer the possibility of opening more than a single window and editing many documents at once. But why should you do without? Simply start by installing TitEd as an accessory, and then execute it as an application. In the Desk menu, TitEd will be available with its window and its many features to brightly complement TitEd the application. You can then, of course, easily and seamlessly exchange texts between the two by using the GEM clipboard! If text exchange between applications is not a requirement, it is preferable to use the built-in TitEd clipboard, which is much faster. Note: when used as an accessory, TitEd will lose the content of its clipboard as you launch and quit applications. This menu is the door to the Search and Replace options. ุ Find... Displays a dialog box, where search parameters are entered. The "Printer initialisation" field allows the input a string of decimal codes, to be sent to the printer at the beginning of print jobs. This feature is most useful to enable special printing modes on your printer. Each decimal entry must be separated by a comma. Refer to your printer's manual for specific codes and features. For example, my Panasonic KX-P1080C features superscript printing. I use that printing mode to double the number of lines on each page: 27,83,0,15,27,49 ยยยายยย าย ยยายย ฤ ฤ ฤ ฤ ฤ ฬline spacing at 7/72 of an inch. ฤ ฬcompressed mode ฬsuperscript printing The "Left margin" value is the number of spaces that will be printed at the beginning of each line. The "Lines/page" value represents the number of lines your printer can fit on a page. This value is not for the printer; it is used by TitEd to calculate when to draw a page break across the screen. This menu lets tell TitEd about your preferences...to your heart's content! ุ Word wrap at ?? Allows TitEd to show off its word processor manners. With this option enabled, TitEd knows where to end the line and automatically moves the cursor to the beginning of the next one. Clicking on the numerical field of this entry will prompt TitEd to politely enquire about the column where you wish your text to wrap. It is important to know that, since TitEd can only edit ASCII texts, it doesn't use any special codes to distinguish between ends of lines and ends of paragraphs. It therefore resorts to a trick: when a line ends with a space, it is considered as part of a paragraph; otherwise, it is recognized as the end of a paragraph. With word wrap enabled, a space character is automatically inserted at the end of the line along with a carriage return. If you modify the current value of the word wrap column, you may find that you have to reformat the whole text. The "Reformat" option explained below will come in handy for that purpose. With this option checked, each new character from the keyboard leads to an automatic reformatting of the paragraph, starting at the cursor position. Allows you to reformat a paragraph, starting at the cursor position. If a block of text is selected, only it will be reformatted. If you want to reformat the entire document, you must first select it entirely by entering Control-A on the keyboard. The more lines in your text, the longer the reformating process will take. Permits centering of the line where the cursor is found. The resulting position depends on the current wrap column value. To insure proper centering, remove spaces that may be trailing at the end of the line. They may not be visible to you, but all-seeing TitEd won't miss them and will take them into account! ุ Tab width... Allows resizing of the Tab displacement. Values from 1 to 16 are permitted. When you modify the current Tab value, you may need to reformat your entire document since lines containing Tab codes will change size. ุ Cursor... Displays a dialog box to allow changes to the cursor appearance and its blink rate. Available only on higher resolution (mono, VGA or others) screens, this options allows you to double the number of lines displayed in the window by using a smaller character font. รรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรร Keyboard shortcuts รรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรรร Deleteูููููููููููููููู Erase character at cursor position Backspaceููููููููููููู Erase character left of cursor position Control-Deleteูููููููู Erase line at cursor position Shift-Deleteูููููููููู Erase line from cursor position to end of line Insertูููููููููููููููู Insert last deleted line at cursor position Clr/Homeูููููููููููููู Move cursor to start or end of text Arrowsูููููููููููููููู Move cursor in corresponding direction Shift-left arrowูููููู Cursor to beginning of line Shift-right arrowููููู Cursor to end of line Shift-up arrowูููููููู Cursor one page back Shift-down arrowูููููู Cursor one page forward Shift-F1 to F9ูููููููู Mark current cursor position F1 to F9ูููููููููููููู Jump to corresponding marker F10ููููููููููููููููููู Jump to current cursor position (or start of block) Undoูููููููููููููููููู Cancel last modification Helpูููููููููููููููููู Display information about current text Escููููููููููููููููููู Access special characters Control-Aููููููููููููู Select all Control-Cููููููููููููู Copy selected block to clipboard Control-Dููููููููููููู Repeat search backward Control-Eููููููููููููู Use selected block as search string Control-Fููููููููููููู Find string Control-Gููููููููููููู Repeat search forward Control-Lููููููููููููู Go to line Control-Nููููููููููููู Clear text from memory Control-Oููููููููููููู Load text file in memory Control-Pููููููููููููู Print text Control-Qููููููููููููู Quit TitEd Control-Rููููููููููููู Find and replace string Control-Sููููููููููููู Save current text on disk Control-Tููููููููููููู Repeat search and replace forward Control-Vููููููููููููู Paste clipboard content at cursor position Control-Wููููููููููููู Reformat paragraph (or block) from cursor position Control-Xููููููููููููู Cut selected block and store in clipboard Control-Zููููููููููููู Center cursor line
