Gregg ------------ Category 4, Topic 35 Message 23 Tue Apr 21, 1992 N.WEINRESS [Norm] at 01:17 EDT Problem with OmniChrome is that Atari is obsoleting it before it can appear. I don't know what new resolutions will be available with the new computer to be released this year, but I'm pretty certain that it will be something not planned for OmniChrome, not available on any existing board. As a result, there will be software written in future to take advantage of Atari's capabilities. If our board can't duplicate those features, it's a dodo. The result is that I'm doing several other designs and have put that on the back burner (but it's _not_ forgotten) until I know precisely what I have to emulate. Assuming I can get the leave Stateside (based on what happens with the SERB) then you can bet on my showing up in S California for a visit.... What I'd really like to do is time it for the Glendale show, but I suspect that's just a pipe dream right now. Seriously though, a visit to Sunnyvale and down to your neck of the woods would be on the agenda if I can swing it. I am now typing on a SM124 monitor bearing a 1024x800 screen, interlaced, yes, but not anywhere near as bad as I anticipated. It is Very crisp and quite useable. The 800x600 mode is non interlaced and even more stable. This board REALLY shines on the new SM147. It does wonderful justice to the 14" screen If you are looking for a very low cost MONOCHROME graphics enhancement, this is worth looking into. Our company, Click Here Computers (exhibited the Reflex at ACE '92) will import and support these units for any interested parties. The Cost would be $550 CAN for the (original)Mega ST version and $585 CAN for the 1040STe version. A VME version is apparently in the works. Contact (613) 584-4825 or (613) 231-3495 for more info please. For those who are not aware of the specifications of the Reflex 1024 Board, it features: - Resolutions of up to 1024x1024 (2048x2048 for the 2048 expansion board) - Will run a variety of resolutions on your SM124/125/147 up to 1024x960 interlaced or 800x592 non-interlaced. - Supports professional monitors such as Samsungs/Eizos/Hitachis to the maximun resolution they offer. - Low initial cost, board only. Upgrade monitor when able. - Plug and go for Mega ST owners, Fitting kit for 1040STe (requires case cutting) Tech Specs - 128 KB dedicated Video Memory - Standard 50 MHz dot clock, plug in second for resolution needed. - Horizonal sync 30 KHz to 80 KHz - Vertical sync 40 Hz to 80 Hz (interlaced or non-interlaced) - Video connectors - 13 Pin DIN (Atari) and 9 Pin DB Leave me a note if you want a bit more info. ttfn. Tim. p.s. I just noticed that someone was interested in compatibility. I have only had one incompatibility with it so far that was unexpected. I picked up Warp 9 at ACE and installed it AFTER the Reflex driver. This left me with a blank screen. I later got agressive and put it BEFORE the Reflex driver and all is excellent now. Jim Allen is now updating his accelerators to be compatible with it and my T25 is being updated so that the Video Cache of the accelerator can speed up the display on this board. It is not that Fast Techs boards were incompatible, just too much of the video RAM was cached for this board. Spectre works in any of the 1024x??? modes. It doesn't like the 800x??? modes, nor do some other non-standard programs like Script and HyperPaint II. Otherwise, I'm in heaven and compatibility is NOT a problem! ------------ Category 4, Topic 35 Message 30 Fri Apr 24, 1992 G.ANDERSON at 07:05 EDT Norm; Please keep me posted via Email on your developments... SERB is Selective EARLY Retirement Board. The service is being forced to kick a LOT of folks out of the military and, in addition to voluntary 'early out' programs for those that want them (few Officers have taken them up on those) they are going to kick a lot of folks out by forcing them to retire before they wanted to (and before they could have a chance at promotion in a lot of cases). Could be worse though, a LOT of folks are just going to get tossed out with minimal separation pay after several years of dedicated service... no say in the matter. Folks have been screaming about the thousands of workers GM released this year.... compared to the numbers that Congress is forcing the Military to toss out those aren't even a drop in the bucket. A best case scenario is to buy a VME board, plug it in, buy a VGA quality monitor, plug it in, and enjoy the pleasure of hi-rez color on my beloved MegaSTe. Can this be done at this time? Further, if this solution exists, would I then have hi-rez color on my old software such as Word Writer and Interlink? Can it be done.....PLease pretty PLease.... Pax smitty ------------ Category 4, Topic 35 Message 43 Fri May 01, 1992 E.KRIMEN [Ed Krimen] at 21:07 EDT Jim, Your best bet for a better color display is one of the Crazy Dots boards or one of the CyberCube boards. However, expect to pay around $1000 for these. In addition, to really take advantage of these boards, you should get a good monitor: much more than a VGA-quality monitor, and it might cost at least $600 as well. Now, I would only recommend these boards for those who are going to be doing intensive graphics work. They are just too expensive for the casual user. Perhaps I misunderstood you, but if you just want to run Word Writer and Interlink in a higher resolution, you should check out a monochrome monitor, like the SM127 or getting a multisync. Moreover, if you get the multisync, you can plan ahead and get one that you could use later with a graphics board. But don't get a graphics board just to see Word Writer and Interlink in a higher resolution -- unless you're rolling in dough, in which case you can get me one too. :^) Another point about monochrome monitors: when I got my first ST, I got a color monitor and lived with it for years because I really didn't think I wanted monochrome. Well, now that I have a multisync, I NEVER use color unless the application or game requires it. If the application is a utility and it ONLY runs in color, I don't use it. Think twice and a few times more about going with a monochrome monitor. I think you will really like it. The same goes for you too, Ron Hunter. :^) The image is really crisp and you get a lot more real estate for windows and text and such. Of course I miss the color, but I prefer the increased resolution and sharp image. When I used a TT (with color monitor) for the first time, I was surprised that the image wasn't that crisp. I don't think the TT display scans at 70Hz like the ST monochrome's; I think it's 60Hz. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong, please.) ------------ Category 4, Topic 35 Message 44 Sat May 02, 1992 J.KISTNER at 02:34 EDT Ed K. Thank you very much for the reply. Ideally I would like to have SVGA color on my MSTe. But as you suspect, the MultiSync monitor solution would be much more suitable to my needs as well as being more cost effective. Now, hears the rub. I have heard so much conflicting info on MultiSync for the ST that I'm totally confused. It seems as though there are good and bad comments about every one I've heard about, and I have never seen one running on an ST. Now this is what I would like: color as good as my SC1224, and hi-rez mono as good as the Atari mono monitor. If I could have that, I would be quite satisfied. Can you offer some more advice on this topic? 1-What set up do you use? 2-What other MultiSync set ups do you have info on, good and bad. 3-What do you think would be the best MultiSync set up for quality and reliability? Any help greatly appreciated. ---Jim--- ------------ Category 4, Topic 35 Message 45 Sat May 02, 1992 V.PATRICELL1 [Vince] at 05:57 EDT Jim, Most multisync monitors will give you as good or better color as compared to the Atari SC1224, however the monochrome is a different story. It is virtually impossible for a color monitor to display an image as sharp as a strictly mono monitor, however several of the multisyncs will come close. I would suggest the Omnimon Rainbow monitor by Wuztec since it is made strictly for the Atari and has great color and a very good mono mode (although not quite as sharp as the SM124). It comes with an Atari cable that allows switching from color to mono modes easily, has a .28 dot pitch (very good), and can easily upgrade as you do since it is capable of displaying a resolution much greater than the ST. Wuztec also has announced an expanded color graphics board for the ST that sounds pretty nice. Do you have any info on 68030 compatibility? thanks mjw ------------ Category 4, Topic 35 Message 47 Sat May 02, 1992 E.KRIMEN [Ed Krimen] at 18:51 EDT Jim, I have a NEC 3D with an Omnimon Peripherals Omnix3 switch connected to a Mega STE. I truly believe that you can't lose with the 3D. It's really a nice monitor, and works well with the ST. The mono is excellent, especially with larger screen area. The color isn't as good as the old Atari JVC monitors, but I don't think you would really be able to tell unless you put them side-by-side. The anti-glare coating may also minimally affect the difference in color (from a Atari monitor), but it's really, really minor. Too minor to mention almost. When I was first searching for a multisync, I was going through the same things you are now. I had never seen one connected to an ST, so I had my reservations about it. I had simply done a lot of searching for info about it and asking people who had already done it. I saw a good price for the 3D so I went for it. Initially, I had problems with another switchbox, the Talon Omniswitch, but I got rid of it since I couldn't get it to work properly. Good luck. ------------ Category 4, Topic 35 Message 48 Sat May 02, 1992 R.GLOVER3 [Rob] at 22:04 EDT A friend in Florida got a deal on a used NEC 3Ds, and he loves it. Now I'm trying to find one at a good price. If I don't, I may end up getting that Princeton Ultra 1400 from Damark, if they have any left when I manage to scrape up $400. It would be that much nicer if someone would make a nice VME video board that will pipe all the ST resolutions through the card and allow the use of ANY normal multisync, rather than just ones that can sync really low. Then I could get that new NEC 3FGXYZPDQ123 or whatever the hell it's called! :) Rob ------------ Category 4, Topic 35 Message 49 Tue May 05, 1992 J.KISTNER at 00:35 EDT Ed, Vince, et al, Thanx for the advice. I have tried the Virtual screen modes and they are VERY smooth. I haven't fully explored the 800x600 mode, but I believe it is the same as the 1024x??? modes. When you choose a graphic mode, the config program then asks you what virtual screen option you would like. On resolutions of less that 800 vertical, you get 800, 1024 or None. On 800 vertical you get, wow! 1024 and None. The scrolling is very nice and you have a choice of mouse scrolling or jump scroll. If you are running an interlaced mode, a click on the Resolution button of the ACC then takes you into a virtual mode. For example I am now running 1024x800 on my SM124, I go to the DA and punch the Resolution button and I now have a 1024x400 screen that scrolls virtually on a 1024x800 screen WITH OUT interlacing. The software that they call their "Version 2" is actually the German version and is what I'm running now (it came with it!). As far as 68030 compatibility goes, well, we will just say that Jim Allen is borrowing my Reflex board for testing. Maybe I'll get to borrow a TinyTurbo.... If you need any more info, just leave a note. If you want a board, just give me a ring! ttfn. I observed a NEC 3D that a freind had and the mono can't fill the screen, otherwise he likes it (it's shared with a PC). NEC 3Ds are getting HARD to find. I looked all around at a few LARGE computer shows and no-one had any Multi-Sync monitors that went down to 15 KHZ (CGA in PC talk). Finally I bought a monitor from RIO. I was told twice it would be a COMPEC (not to be confused with COMPACT) but what I got was actually a LOOP. I like it, mono is OK even for a die-hard SC124 user, and color is great. The med rez color, and low res color for that matter, compare well with the SC1224 and SC1435. If anything, they are not as bright, but I would attribute it to the non-glare screen on the NEC 3D; the difference is not that bad though. The ability to use monochrome on the same monitor more than makes up for it. The NEC 3DS is the newer model of the 3D (both of which aren't made any more) and it adds better radiation protection. There's a better term for "radiation protection," but I can't think of it at the moment. :^) ------------ Category 4, Topic 35 Message 56 Sat May 16, 1992 R.GLOVER3 [Rob] at 18:38 EDT Ed: You mean "reduced emmissions?" I paid less than $500 for the card, the VDI drivers and TMS Paint. As a matter of fact the card is manufactured by the same people who make the famous TMS Cranach Studio. It took me less than five minutes to install the card; it plugs right in the bus and needs a -12Volt from underneath the power supply. I hooked it up to a new SAMTRON non-intelaced 14inch VESA specs monitor (costs less than $400 these days) and everything was running fine right away. I have never seen such beautiful colour pictures on any SVGA monitor running under WINDOWS. And it is fast. On a 8 Mhz machine the gemdraw figures are 180% for 2 colours, 125% with 256 colours up to 1024x768 resolution. You also can run ATARI-VDI with blitter at 145% speed increase. I was impressed with the 640x480x256 colours resolution. It is a petty that there are very few programs running at those resolutions. Of course Calamus SL, though rather slow and yes ALLADIN and a few others like the Cranach Studio Demo which is superb. Fortunately there is a ReSwitch driver where you tell at which resolutions a particular program runs: whenever you start the program it automatically switches to the proper resolution. I am still trying to figure out all the in and outs; the VDI driver diskette is loaded with utilities (all in German !! but easy to understand). I was unable to run the card with the T-25 at 25Mhz; Jim tells me this could be fixed after seeing the colour mapping. However, even at 8 Mhz the card has very much replaced my SM124 with OVERSCAN. I can highly recommend this card. There are also VME versions available at slightly higher prices and a 32K card which cost almost $ 1,000. For more information contact Wittich Computer, Luitpoldstr.2, 8400 Regensburg GERMANY. Fax 011-49941-562510 from North America. If the VME version isn't much more expensive, then it sounds like a strong contender for my next major purchase. What exactly are the different resolutions/color planes it offers? Does it require a specific type of monitor to run, other than a standard, ST- compatible multisync? Will it pipe the standard ST color resolutions in to the multisync monitor, or must you STILL have an SC1224 to run, say, low-res games? I really don't want to have to deal with two monitors. Thanks! Rob ------------ Category 4, Topic 35 Message 65 Fri Jun 12, 1992 JWKUEHN [Wolf] at 23:12 EDT Rob, you may have problems with low-res since the IMAGINE thinks you are running a B&W monitor (in colour, of course) at resolutions starting at 200xX to 1024X728. With a video-mode-generator you can create any resolution your monitor is able to handle. I am using a SVGA non-interlaced model and can run 1024x728 at 72 Hz. You do not need a multi-sync. However, problems are caused by improperly programmed games, PD-soft-ware, etc. Wolf ------------ Category 4, Topic 35 Message 66 Sat Jun 13, 1992 JWKUEHN [Wolf] at 02:07 EDT I now have the IMAGINE 256 running at 25 Mhz. Multiple bit planes for color, or non-contiguous (where it doesn't end evenly -- say, leave thelast 200 bytes on each line to "dribble off into the bit bucket" really confuse Spectre.) We've been looking at this since the first AutoSwitch OverScans (I have one) and the original, I admire 'em, DE-line hack of a few years' back .. If there is no Color QuickDraw, Spectre is going to get peeved about multiple bitplanes interwoven (a la Atari color modes...) Flicker can be real trying. I know I was touching a sore spot by making the PC comment, but don't kid yourself. I can get thousands of programs that take advantage of VGA graphics for the price of downloading them. If you are refering to commercial software, you make it sound like you have to buy thousands of dollars of software just to make it work. If you are refering to 24bit color, I've got a real shock for you... I got a 24bit adapter for FREE with the Microtek scanner I bought. To use it: Windows 3.1 = $89. Every Windows application I use will use the board after that. If you want to compare SW cost (ST vs PC/WIN) feature-for-feature, you're really out of luck. If you know something about ST expanded video support that I don't, then please list all the software for the ST that supports VGA spec color graphics. George... Nope, I'm not mistaken. The spec's you gave for the Chromax are the same as the card I got for free. Actully, the PC card will do 640 x 480 at 16.7M, but the Chromax is close. BTW, since you are selling it (the Chromax), maybe you can tell me what software will directly support the expanded resolution/color, or will it just be a nifty desktop? I've got the money to spend... convince me. I already had a 24bit adapter so you'll find the card I'm talking about listed for sale here and in the PC RT. Price? $150.00 brand new with warranty card. Regards, Tom ------------ Category 4, Topic 35 Message 92 Sat Oct 17, 1992 G.RICHARDSO1 [George] at 22:12 EDT Tom, something you get included with something you buy is never free. What will work with the expanded video modes? In the 1024 x 768 color modes, virtually every major current application for the ST. They'll all run in the 256 and 15,16 and 24 bit modes as well, but they may not take advantage of them. several programs have been fixed to make use of these modes, but since I haven't yet tested them, I can't verify it. I'm not interested in convincing you, I'm not a salesman, to push something off onto someone who doesn't see the use. Enjoy the PC, but from what I know, using PC's in my work every day, very little in the PC world will even let you take advantage of 15 bit, let alone 16 , 24 or 32 bit color. I didn't expect to get it, it wasn't advertised as being included, so to _me_ it's free. I enjoy my MSTe AND my PC, I just don't like being told that blue is orange. Extended video for the ST will, I imagine, always cost more because the market is small. I was reponding to the comment that it cost thousands of dollars to use HiRes/HiColor video on a PC. It simply isn't true. If you work with PC's every day, you must be staring at a DOS prompt, because there are lots of programs that take advantage of HiColor. Telling me that PC video is another topic in another RT is, in my opinion, a childish way to end a discussion. I never get that anywhere else. Wonder why? Regards, Tom ------------ Category 4, Topic 35 Message 95 Sun Oct 18, 1992 G.RICHARDSO1 [George] at 11:48 EDT Maybe because you're not out of your topic Tom. And no, I run windows (slow as it is compared to an ST, even on a 40mhz 386 box) every day. The point is Tom, that nobody but you is interested in discussing PC video. The childishness is in your refusing to see that and drop the subject. If you want to discuss it, find someone who *wants* to discuss it with you. I don't see anyone posting here who does. The SC1224 will not be supported. The Falcon uses interlacing to get higher res modes on the SC1224, and CHromax is not capable of interlacing at all. Thus the highest resolution you might get with it might be something like 800 x 220, which is pretty useless. Is this now going to be a product for plain-jane STs and TTs, as well? If so, great! If not, what would one need to use your gear? Or is the surbey to decide what to support? Also, can you explain what Chromax will do, say in comparison to what some of the other expanded video board options for the Atari do, or don't do? Thanks. mike.k ------------ Category 4, Topic 35 Message 97 Sun Oct 18, 1992 T.YURICK [T.YURICK] at 19:56 EDT George... You are correct, almost. I don't see anyone who *can*. One more question (it is on topic), do you know anyone who _does_ know anything about software that will directly support HiRes/HiColor with boards like the Chromax? Regards, Tom ------------ Category 4, Topic 35 Message 98 Mon Oct 19, 1992 G.RICHARDSO1 [George] at 21:52 EDT Mike, there will be versions for the SST, TT/MSTe(VME card), and the Mega ST. Compared to other multi-res cards it will be a bit less expensive and have better capabilities, and compared to the fixed resolution cards, it will be a bit more expensive, but have multiple resolutions. :-) George Richardson Merlin Group, Inc. ------------ Category 4, Topic 35 Message 99 Tue Oct 20, 1992 S.JOHNSON10 [Steve] at 00:26 EDT G.RICHARDSO1 - 800x220 is pretty useless? I have a Matrox board and I know what you are getting at, but the Genoa has comparable specs to the Chromax. It's not fair to compare the Chromax and the Matrox, or the Genoa and the Matrox. The Matrox does 24bit at much higher resolutions. I didn't put down the ST (I own a MSTe), I didn't say the Chromax was no good, all I took issue with was the statement that it costs thousands of dollars to implement and/or use HiColor, HiRes video on a PC. I like the Atari user interface better than Windows, but I couldn't let someone make such an obviously ridiculous statement without some counterpoint. I expected to be directed to the PC RT as soon as I started asking hard questions and stating hard facts. What else could they say? George... Hey! Whattaya know? Somebody _does_ want to discuss PC video (as it compares to the Chromax). Regards, Tom ------------ Category 4, Topic 35 Message 103 Sat Oct 24, 1992 S.STANDIFORD [Praetor] at 23:50 EDT T.YURICK, I never meant to say that it wasn't possible to put 24 bit color on a PC for excellent cost. Heck, I just saw an ATI 24 bit VGA (seems like a contradiction in terms, to me) card for $225 (my cost as a dealer). But, I'm sorry to say, that it's just not in the same league with the big boys, like Targa+ 16/32/64, and ATVista. I'm sorry, but it's just not. For one thing, it's slower than TAR! Whereas the Truevision products are much faster. I have not seen either the Matrox or Genoa, so I can't comment on them, but for the prices you list I have trouble believing they can compare to the Truevision boards. What it comes down to is this: If you want fast, 24 bit color, with the features necessary for anything more than just viewing "pretty pictures" you still must spend thousands of dollars ON ANY PLATFORM, Atari, IBM, and Mac! Period. And if you doubt it, do as I suggested last message, and check the prices on Targa boards and AT&T GSL products! But this is really a lame topic to be wasting our money in discussing. And no, you never "touched a raw nerve" or anything like that, I'm simply discussing the issue. -Praetor ------------ Category 4, Topic 35 Message 104 Sun Oct 25, 1992 W.JESSOP [WARREN PHOTO] at 04:28 EST Hi George, What type of a time frame are you hoping for on the Chromax... George Richardson Merlin Group, Inc. ------------ Category 4, Topic 35 Message 106 Sun Oct 25, 1992 T.YURICK [T.YURICK] at 11:01 EST Praetor... I agree with everything you said, but remember that the original message that I saw said _nothing_ about speed or other features. It was a sweeping statement that didn't take _anything_ into account. I realize it's hard to convey some things via GEnie without some intentions being misunderstood. I did look at TrueVision, Hercules, and Opta boards before I got the Matrox, which compares favorably (IMO) with the Targa boards. I admit that my system cost thousands of dollars to put together, but it will do 24bit color at 1600 x 1200 and although I think it has reasonable speed, it still keeps me waiting for re-draws. I truely wish that I could have the same combination of hardware AND software on the Atari platform, but it just isn't available and I have a growing business to run. Maybe that will change if Atari actually markets the Falcon. One can always hope. I do wonder what effect this past weeks near doubling of RAM prices will do to display adapter prices. Thanks for discussing the issue with some rationality, it was refreshing. Regards, Tom ------------ Category 4, Topic 35 Message 107 Sun Oct 25, 1992 S.STANDIFORD [Praetor] at 22:08 EST Oh, definately. I always enjoy a good discussion of hardware/software. And looking back, I should have qualified my statements a bit more thuroughly, but I see that you have understood my point, none the less. It is sad that it is so difficult to compete graphically with an Atari. I'm hunting down the necessary graphics cards and software for my TT030 now, but I realize that I'm looking at spending a lot more for cards than I probably would on the IBM platform. Still, I have abandoned MS-DOS machines (for my home use) and have decided to use Atari computers because I believe them to be superior, and if that means I'll have to wait a bit longer for my 24 bit color, then so be it. I guess patience is a good lesson to learn, no? -Praetor ------------ Category 4, Topic 35 Message 108 Mon Oct 26, 1992 B.REEVES2 [Alter Ego] at 01:11 EST George, This sounds like it will be a great video board. Are all of its output parameters programable? Horizontal and vertical resolution, number or bits per pixel, and frame rate? If so what is the range of each of these parameters? Is there a graphics coprocessor on this board? If so, which one is it? How much VRAM is on the board? Or is that user selectable as well? Will you include a VDI driver with the board? Will there be any software included? You also might want to consider adding interlacing as an option at least. It doesn't look too bad at an 80Hz field rate. Thanks ------------ Category 4, Topic 35 Message 109 Mon Oct 26, 1992 G.RICHARDSO1 [George] at 06:23 EST Interlacing will _not_ be an option. It's far too late to design it in, and it adds expense that I feel is unwarranted. Horizontal, vertical, number of bits, frame rate, sync pulse width, blanking period, and clock rate, are all programmable. The range is so wide as to be meaningless, but I'm not certain that I'll publish all of these. It is possible to program a setup that will damage a monitor. There is a fixed 1 Meg of VRAM on board, not expandable, and no coprocessor. Software will include VDI drivers for all standard resolutions and probably a graphics viewer for most standard file formats.
