Now, CodeHead Technologies ups the Fun Quotient in the Atari world with Extend- O-Save, the modular screensaver in the new version of Warp 9! No longer do you have to put up with the same dull screensaver graphics day after day -- with Extend-O-Save the possibilities are almost limitless. (Flying toasters, anyone?) Warp 9 now comes with 5 screensaver modules (maybe more by the time you read this). The method for writing modules will be freely distributed, so any programmer will be able to write new modules at will. Some of the features of Warp 9 w/ Extend-O-Save include: o Move the mouse into a corner of the screen to automatically start the screensaver, or move it to another corner to prevent the screensaver from kicking in. (And you can tell it which corners you want to use.) o Pick the types of events that will prevent the screensaver from kicking in (such as modem or MIDI input, or GEM graphics and text), and automatically control the screensaver for individual programs. o Select any 'time-out' interval from 1 to 99 minutes. (The 'time-out' is the amount of time Extend-O-Save will wait before activating the screensaver.) In addition to Extend-O-Save, the new version of Warp 9 has some other major enhancements: o PinHead is now built into Warp 9, so you can remove one more program from your AUTO folder. Full automatic control of the 'fastload' effect for specific programs is included, just as it was in PinHead. o Automatic loading of specific fonts and desktop pictures for each program you run. o A revamped Warp 9 Control Panel, with new controls, and an improved 'Save Config' option. And of course, Warp 9 still has the screen acceleration and other great features (like custom fonts and desktop pictures) that have made it the most popular and most compatible software accelerator ever for Atari computers. Upgrading from Earlier Versions ------------------------------- To upgrade from any previous version of Warp 9 to the new Extend-O-Save version, just send us your original Warp 9 master disk and a check for $15.00 (includes postage and handling). When you mail us the disk, there's no need for a special envelope or disk mailer; simply put it in a normal letter-sized envelope and drop it in the mailbox. If you own any version of Quick ST or Turbo ST, you can upgrade to Warp 9 for just $30.00 by sending us your original disk and a check. (The previous limited $20 upgrade offer has been extended at this new price.) The retail price of Warp 9 is $44.95. CodeHead Technologies P.O. Is there a way to configure the screen saver not to run during a particular program. The other day I told Alladin to do an auto pass, and came back 20 minutes later and was still logged on. After moving the mouse, a whole lot of text messages scrolled past (quite quickly I might add), and then GEnie said that I was idle for too long. Talk about costly. Other times when I print something complex, the printer will stop printing as soon as the saver "kicks in". Again, moving the mouse will start the old Epson a printin again. Any help on this? Scott ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 3 Sat May 22, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 03:45 EDT See F., Any perceived "slowness" of the Falcon is usually the results of running it in 256-color or true color modes. The additional screen memory required by these modes does indeed bog down redraws. To top it off, most users are accustomed to the acceleration of Warp 9. The additional speed of the 68030 and 16MHz is not enough to offset these factors. Warp 9 does speed up the Falcon (somewhere in the neighborhood of 200% in 256- color mode). John ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 4 Sat May 22, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 05:26 EDT Scott, If you don't want Extend-O-Save to kick in while online, enable the "RS-232" button in the Preferences box. If you _do_ want Extend-O-Save to kick in while online, disable the "RS-232" button and use a module that does not consume a lot of processor time, such as Dissolve, Flipper, Fortune Cookie, or the Default Screensaver. Modules like Mandala and Flying Shapes take almost all of the processor's time and the foreground process (be it downloading or printing) will be virtually halted. GEnie's message about being idle too long will appear within only a few minutes and if you don't respond you'll be logged off. Although you didn't see this message until 20 minutes later, you were most likely logged off within a few minutes so it probably only cost you about 30 cents, not $2. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 5 Sat May 22, 1993 K.VANDELLEN [Ken Van] at 07:43 EDT Scott, You can keep Warp 9 on and turn off the saver by putting S0 with the program name in the DAT file. I don't have a problem with it on with Aladdin, though. Ken ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 6 Sat May 22, 1993 L.TRAPANI [Lou][Machine] at 23:59 EDT Al, You mentioned in the Spelling Sentry TOPic that with Warp 9 it is better to turn off all the fast load bits on all the programs because Warp 9 handles it. I figured that I respond here in order the message thread from going off topic. So I should turn off all my fast load bits on all prgs except Warp 9 and this may stop programs from bombing. Do you know why that is? I am just curious. John and/or Charles, I have been considering adding a graphics card to my TT030. If I do, will I still be able to use Warp 9? I think on certain cards it will not work. Do you have any recommendations? Thanks. Everyone: As for the Warp 9 speed question on the Falcon. Well I do not have a Falcon (and if I did, I would not have the special Falcon version of W9). But I can tell you that I use Warp 9 on my TT030. When I first installed it, I did not saw, "Wow, look how much faster it is." But when I turn it off for some reason or another, you can see the difference. And that is when I say, "Wow, look how much slower it is!" Plus I am sure there are other Warp 9 features that you may want to use with the Falcon besides the accelerator. --Lou T.-- Posted Saturday, May 22, 1993 11:09:04 p.m. ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 7 Sun May 23, 1993 J.BRENNER1 [See Flat] at 02:44 EDT I guess Warp 9 will be a must for the Falcon. ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 8 Sun May 23, 1993 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 11:02 EDT Lou, John will have a better explanation that I ever could. Warp handles fast- loading better than TOS does; that's the main point. Al ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 9 Sun May 23, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 12:45 EDT Lou, Warp 9 (and PinHead) clears an extra 32K of memory when it handles fastloading. This clears up most problems with programs and accessories, and it only takes about a hundredth of a second. The speedup of fastloading is produced by eliminating the clearing of memory that's normally done when you run a program. Some programs allocate memory from the system and assume that the memory contains all zeroes. These programs may crash if you fastload them. However, the clearing of 32K of extra memory is usually enough to solve this problem. As for graphics cards, I don't really know. I can tell you that Warp 9 is not fully compatible with the Crazy Dots card, but I have no idea whether it works with others. If you want to see a dramatic difference on the TT between using Warp 9 and not using it, try opening a window (text mode) on the desktop and hitting Esc repeatedly to update the window. This is what I do at shows when someone asks me if Warp 9 can really help on the TT. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 10 Sun May 23, 1993 E.BETZ [Bud] at 15:37 EDT Well, I am having a problem with the 3.75 update. I purchased W9 from another individual (ver 3.73), and it works flawlessly (registration transfer to be sent soon). Downloaded the 3.74 upgrade and installed it no problem. Downloaded the 3.75 upgrade and installed it: problem. The upgrade installed fine, but the system now three-bombs upon warm or cold boot. I turned off all the auto prgs and accs, warm or cold boot same results. I DL from a local Atari BBS and figured the file data was corrupted, so I pulled it off GEnie this morning. Well, same thing. My setup is: Mega4, 8Mhz, TEC with TOS 2.06, AT Speed C16, 52MB Quantum HD with Supra controller in a Supra case, and ICD 6.08 Pro driver software. Like I said, all auto programs and accessories are off, even the HD clock read prg. I haven't got a clue of the problem now other than some hardware/software mismatch. Any suggestions or ideas? 3.73 works just fine and I will continue to use it. EOS modules are awsome!! John ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 13 Mon May 24, 1993 E.BETZ [Bud] at 00:08 EDT John, Did the test, and W9 ver 3.75 does not bomb when booted from the floppy with nothing but a monitor, mouse, and power cord attached. Leads me to the conclusion that it is a HW/SW mismatch. I also, out of curiosity, reinstalled the Supra boot software, and it works fine. Now I feel fairly confident there is an incompatibility with ICD's SCSI Pro Utilities (ver 6.08 boot) running a Supra controller and Warp 9 ver 3.75. New to you, or has this poped up before? I know everyone uses this set up for their HD, don't they ? Coments anyone? OBTW, I put a note to ICD on their BBS Cat 3 Topic 1 about this thing. I notices people we using all knids of cool fonts in their DAT file, so I decided to try it myself. My STHIGH.DAT file looks something like this: W935 alad.prg tMAC.FNT lookit.prg tEUROSTILE.FNT callig.prg s0 tIBM.FNT But the new fonts never show up! I have tried Warp9 on the desktop and in MultiDesk. Even when I load the DAT file from the accessory, it's 'No Go!' BTW the release notes mention the DAT file as being referenced in the manual. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 17 Tue May 25, 1993 L.TRAPANI [Lou][Machine] at 02:36 EDT John, Thanks for the information on clearing the fastload bit on programs when using Warp 9. So I guess it would be good idea to clear the fastload bit in the programs but it is not all that necessary because Warp 9 clears that extra 32k, right? I guess I will have to fish the information about the compatibilities of using a graphics card with Warp 9 from the distributors of the cards themselves. I would hate to give up Warp 9 in order to use a card. Yes, I agree with you. There is a big speed difference when using Warp 9 on the TT030. My last post about it was just to illustrate the point that you will see the difference after you disable Warp 9 more so then when first start using it. I guess you kind of get used to it and expect to see the speed, but if you disable it for some reason, you will see the difference right away in most cases (windows, text scrolling, etc...) Thanks. --Lou T.-- Written Tuesday, May 25, 1993 02:27:14 a.m. ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 18 Tue May 25, 1993 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 05:13 EDT Ah, the mystery of where Warp finds its fonts! I must confess that I have a parallel set of Warp 9 data files, and I update both of them when I change one, since I can never be sure which one is being used by Warp. One is in the root of C:, and the other is in the same folder that the Warp cfg DA is in. It doesn't matter where the fonts are, John G.; they can be somewhere else, but the DAT file needs to be either in the root of the boot drive or the same folder as the DA. Al ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 19 Tue May 25, 1993 C.OATES2 [Chris] at 06:11 EDT as an owner of both a Crazy Dots board and Warp 9, I can both verify that it doesn't work, and be very sad. If you think a Falcon is slow at 256 colors, Try a MegaSTE in 800 x 600 x 256! :( Any chance of getting ANY part of Warp9 to function with the CD? Like maybe just EOS? or will your new player program work on it? ~Chris ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 20 Tue May 25, 1993 M.MOTOGAWA [MEL] at 10:17 EDT John G., Be sure that you're using the latest version of W9, 3.75, and that all of your font files are properly named in the .dat file. I noticed that EUROSTILE.FNT is a little long for a filename, unless you're using a Mac. :-) I believe there must have been a revision of the manual and you probably have the original one, like me, that didn't talk about the .dat file. This revised manual must be what the 3.74 Release Notes are referring to. - Mel ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 21 Tue May 25, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 11:40 EDT John G., You may need to put your file names in upper case. If you have a "Second Printing" manual, the DAT file is explained in Appendix E on page 46. Otherwise, you should find it in your README file (or the README with the upgrade patches). Lou, Yes, it _is_ necessary to clear the fastload bits in your program files. If you don't, the system will bypass the clearing of memory and Warp 9's (or PinHead's) handling will be bypassed at the same time. Then the 32K will not be cleared and you'll have the same problem. This is only important with problem programs, but it's a good idea to just clear all fastload bits and forget about it. Chris, Do none of the EOS modules work with the Crazy Dots board? There are several which should work fine. John ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 22 Tue May 25, 1993 M.MOTOGAWA [MEL] at 12:26 EDT Since I don't use the Filters section for anything else, I set up my filter extenders to represent all of my executable extenders. Then every once in a while, when I want to make sure that all fastbits are off on all of my executable files, I'll open the Filters section, turn On filtering, highlight all of my executable extenders, click on Filter Folder Contents and exit. Now only executable files are shown in Maxi. I'll highlight everything on the partition, from the root directory, and use the Fastbits Off option of Maxi. In a little while (actually a while since I have hundreds of executables) the process is finished and I know that all of my executables have the fastbit set Off. You could simply highlight everything and go from there, but then the operation would take much longer since Maxi would be trying to turn the fastbit off on every file on your partition, text and data files, etc.. - Mel ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 23 Tue May 25, 1993 CODEHEAD [Charles] at 13:31 EDT Al, Fonts that are listed in the DAT file (to be loaded for specific programs) should be located in the Warp 9 Control Panel's default directory, which is set by clicking the button labeled 'Default Path' in the Warp 9 CP. Also, the Warp 9 CP must be present in order for the automatic font loading features to work. The DAT file itself should be kept in the root directory of your boot disk. At bootup, the Warp 9 program (the one that runs in the AUTO folder) searches the root directory for WARP9.DAT. Now, it would be nice, since Warp 9 loads things like fonts and pictures for specific programs, to have different setups for different screen resolutions, right? The problem is, at AUTO folder time, Warp 9 has no way of knowing what the eventual screen resolution is going to be, when the GEM desktop starts up. To solve this problem and allow a different DAT file setup for each resolution, the Warp 9 Control Panel _also_ looks for a DAT file in its 'Default Path' -- but by the name STLOW.DAT, STMEDIUM.DAT, STHIGH.DAT, etc., depending on the current resolution. (This is going to have to change for the Falcon, by the way.) You can also load a DAT file manually from the Warp 9 Control Panel. This lets you make a change to a DAT file, reload it, and see the effects immediately without having to reboot. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= John G., The names of the programs in your DAT file must be in upper case; that's probably why it isn't working. (I just noticed that this requirement isn't mentioned in Appendix E of the Warp 9 manual. Sorry!) Also, as Mel mentioned, EUROSTILE.FNT is one character too long, and can't be a valid filename. - Charles @ CodeHead Tech ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 24 Tue May 25, 1993 J.GNIEWKOWSK [GE-Lamp ST] at 21:17 EDT Al, The funny thing is that even when I load a DAT file using the LOAD PROGRAM DAT FILE button, the dang fonts _still_ don't work. Any other ideas? John E., Heh, thought of putting the font names in uppercase, but still no go. If I load a new system font in and run a program like LOOKIT, the font works fine. it just dosen't seem to be working through the DAT file. Looks like it's time to field strip and see if I have any compatibility problems... Charles, The EUROSTILE was a typo. I don't have the DAT file in the root directory of C:, let me check to see if that fixes it... Nope, it didn't.. Back to the field strip! John E. BTW, the DAT file must be in the default directory and not in the root directory or the directory the accessory is in. Go figgure! John E. Gniewkowski Editor, GEnieLamp ST ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 26 Tue May 25, 1993 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 21:47 EDT Mel, Nice idea on the filtering option to check the fastbits on executables. But letting Maxi have at the entire database of files works better, although it is slower, since it will clear the bits on NON-executable files that are actually executable when their extenders are changed -- ACX, PRX and so on... Al Charles, Yes, I know all about the different Warp dat files -- I use different ones (heck, WARP uses the different ones, I don't!) and they work perfectly when I change to ST Hi or TT Low (and so on) on bootup. But I swear I cannot figure where the operative DAT file is ... but that's because I have two sets! I'll get rid of the second set and see how it works out. Thanks for the reminder. If I'm in Monochrome mode, I get to the desktop, but turning on screen acceleration wreaks some nifty havoc. :) Anyway, testing all the modules which shipped with 3.73 gets the following: Dissolve: Works OK Flipper: OK MonBlank: Goes to White, not good as a saver. :) Picfade, puts the picture opn only the top hald of the screen, and the pic is garbled. Pyromono: Blanks and shows fireworks on the internal video, but not on the CD Pyro: same as Pyromono Slow Dissolve: Same as PicFade, except I get a nice screen where the top half is black and the botom is the same. P.S. I ran all these at 800 x 600 resolution. Which of the new modules should work? I don't mind Dissolve for when I do use Monochrome mode, but I'd like something neater. ~Chris ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 29 Wed May 26, 1993 M.MOTOGAWA [MEL] at 01:37 EDT Al, I've already got those extenders covered in my Filters section. Currently, I use PRG, PRX, ACC, ACX, TOS, TTP, APP (I don't use any GTP's) when I do a batch Fastload Off, which covers the overwhelming majority of the executables on my hd. This is kind of like an incremental backup of a hd, faster. But once in a while I'll just let Maxi have at it with the whole partition to cover the myriad of executable module extensions for those that are run by various applications, like MVG mods, Warp 9 EOS mods (o.k. sysops, I'm back on topic ), Callig paks, etc.. This takes more time, like a full backup of one's hd. - Mel One last topic stretch- Everyone, have ya found the secret hidden Maxifile dedication page? We asked Gribnif many months ago to loan us a CD board for testing, but they don't seem very interested in doing so. As it is, there are so few CD boards in customers' hands in the US that it doesn't make sense for us to spend the considerable amount of time it would take to make Warp 9 compatible with it. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Al, The 't' that signifies a font can actually be either upper or lower case. >> The default directory, eh? THey show up, but through the internal video, like they are looking somewhere sneaky to find out where the video RAM is located or something.... In fact, Warp 9 is the only program I have that I've tried that has managed to draw to the internal video. The only other thing that ever shows up there after the drivers have laoded are Cherry bombs when all heck breaks loose. :) In fact, even not running those modules managed to somehow invert the internal video... Anyway, I do tend to use Mono quite a bit for word processing and such (since Line-a doesn't work in color, and GDOS tends to use it) so I'll keep hapily using Warp9, but I wish there was a more animated EOS module I could run :) ~Chris ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 36 Wed May 26, 1993 J.GNIEWKOWSK [GE-Lamp ST] at 22:31 EDT Al, That's what I did (hid the DAT in the defualt directory and kept the DAT in the root directory) and no fonts loaded. Ken Van Dellen d8^) ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 44 Thu May 27, 1993 M.MOTOGAWA [MEL] at 10:49 EDT I've seen how turning off the fastbit can keep certain acc's from crashing, but I doub't the fastbit thing saves any memory. Just keeps the system from clearing all memory when a prg runs. So turning off the fastbit may not do anything for a W9 EOS module, since it's called by W9 rather than run like a prg. Lot's of other prg's call modules from within themselves, like Callig or MVG and I don't know if clearing their fastbits will help, but I figure what's good for one is good for all. :-) Regarding crashing acc's: if you have an acc. that crashes when you try to load it into Chameleon, try loading it into Multidesk Deluxe as a resident or MDX accessory. I've seen more than a few acc's that bombed Chameleon, yet MDD handled them fine. I guess everyone knows about this already, but try putting W9 right at the front of your auto folder. Once W9 loads, you'll see the auto folder msgs blit by and still have the blinding speed if you have the W9 CP acc. loaded last in the acc. chain, into MDD. Seems like the auto folder boots much faster, which the fastloading is also helping, of course. One other little warped tip: If you're lazy or have a bad aim, you don't have to actually click right on the buttons in the W9 CP acc.. Anywhere on the text of the button will do, also. - Mel ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 45 Thu May 27, 1993 SFRT-ASST [Kenne@SFRT] at 16:20 EDT > How interesting. If you need to turn it off to make CD work, then it's always displaying the physical screen. Perhaps you're not actually loading it into Warp 9 before saving your setup. For instance, if you use the Customizer to alter a fill pattern and save it as a different name, it will show up on screen because the Customizer alters the fill patterns in Warp 9's memory. We're tying up loose ends and taking care of last-minute bugs, so it will be another few weeks before it's ready - but it's definitely a reality. The first release of the Falcon version will not support screen acceleration in 16-bit color modes (the modes Atari calls "true color"); it will automatically sense when you switch to such a mode and turn acceleration off. Most of the other features of Warp 9 do work in 16-bit color modes, though, including Extend-O-Save. All of our current EOS modules have also been revised to work with the Falcon in all modes. The screen savers are fun, but the fireworks gets overlaid by text being written to the screen. I'm having one problem - when I run Straight Fax it does something to the screen redraws so that they are no longer accelerated when I leave the program. I tried turning off the acceleration with the A0 switch for STFAX, but this doesn't seem to make any difference. I've noticed a discussion here of where to put the WARP.DAT file. Could someone please summarize this? I've also had no sucess running Warp CP from within Multidesk Deluxe, is this true? If I put the WARPCNF.PRG in my auto folder can I then skip loading the ACC? I'm assuming that I've already set all my preferences. Which WARP.DAT does it read? Is there a list or collection of EXT files available beyond what is provided on the disk? Have to keep up with my son's Mac... Thanks... ------------ Category 32, Topic 31 Message 169 Sun Jul 11, 1993 J.EIDSVOOG1 [CodeHead] at 19:29 EDT R.Feinman, If text is overwriting a screensaver, it is caused by one of two things. Either the current application is drawing to the screen in a way which Warp 9 can't prevent (most programs don't do this sort of thing) or you've turned off one or both of the text watching options, telling Warp 9 to ignore that activity. We are not aware of any problem between Warp 9 and STraight FAX, such as acceleration being disabled. There are many users (including us) that use them both together every day without problem. If you can repeat the problem reliable, you should disable your other resident software to determine the cause of the problem. The WARP9.DAT file goes in the root of your boot drive (see page 46 or the README file). Note also that the Warp 9 Control Panel will look in its default directory for a a resolution-specific DAT file (see page 4 of the 3.70 release notes). The W9 Control Panel works fine in MultiDesk and this is the recommended place to keep it (loading last) for optimum acceleration. Note that it should be loaded as a _resident_ ACC (see page 10). You can use WARP9CNF.PRG to set some of the preferences in Warp 9. But if you want to use the screen saver or some of the other additional features of Warp 9, you'll need to use the Control Panel. To find Extend-O-Save modules on GEnie, you could search for WARP. I assume that all of the modules that have been uploaded would have that in their search keys.
